  1. My son also had conversation about other schools he applied to come up in almost every interview (he had five- so at least 4 out of the 5) he had. I do think, unfortunately, they are looking to gauge interest. I think it is especially unfortunate in our situation when everything depends on scholarship and financial aid. I will say that it is a "game" I do not know how adept he was/is at playing. We tried our best. The wait, now, is hard.
  2. I have read of rhabdomyolysis occurring with muscle overuse. Your post made me think of it. It is rare but real. I would check him for the symptoms and take him in if he has them. It is better to be safe. Rebecca
  3. The Potter's School has a lot of interesting upper level English courses. If this was my student, I would either do what Farrar says,or I would choose a high interest course at TPS. There are so many choices...and what a great year to enjoy and delve deeper.
  4. Just wanted to send good thoughts. I am so sorry you are going through this. So very sorry. Everything will be okay with the accident/insurance.
  5. Hive, My ninth grade son is in Teaching Textbooks Algebra 1 (2.0). I want to outsource math for him next year. I need him to have a rock solid Algebra foundation. Note: I am not a rock solid Math teacher. I am an English and Writing teacher. What would you do? We have Saxon Math with the Saxon Teacher CD-Rom. We all pretty much hate it. My students (older two brothers) typically tank in the course by the middle of the year. :( I am willing to put him into a course online for the rest of this year and the summer- but I have no idea what to choose. I have looked at Derek Owens AOPS Introduction to Algebra A and tonight- I found: Mathhelp.com https://www.mathhelp.com/homeschoolmathcurriculum/ I am outsourcing Geometry next year- either at our academic co-op or online. I actually wanted him to take Geometry and Algebra 2 next year and was advised against it because of the "weak" TT foundation. I really appreciate any feedback. Thank you!
  6. I live in Maryland. I did not read all the responses. I find this horribly intrusive. I have an oversight/umbrella- and they do come to my home and review our work. Plus I have ( Actually, I chose for the program we participate in for our high school students) to meet with a diploma program liason every year. I go to an orientation in the fall and submit end of the year work as well. Maryland law is already very aggressive- requiring 8 academic subjects to be reported on starting at 5 (K) years old. I also agree that I would move. I have the experience of having homeschooled in two other states- mainly in North Carolina. I have now homeschooled in MD for almost as long as I did in NC. It is very different here.
  7. Do you mean that you are giving credit for the course as a full year course or that he is taking a class that is stretched over 30 weeks or more? I only saw a 22 week stretch class... that is why I am asking! Thank you so much (everyone) for this info! -Rebecca
  8. Does anyone know if these classes/sessions are just enrichment or do they teach the material? I am referring to the classes at this link: https://artofproblemsolving.com/school Thank you!!
  9. Had anyone used HSLDA Online Academy for high school math? I am specifically looking for Geometry. We can't use TPS because of schedule conflicts. Thank you!!
  10. Thank you for your help!! She does seem to have a memory issue and a conceptual issue. I also did find a professional who can offer a full evaluation for her! Taking note of these thoughts. Thank you so much, Rebecca
  11. Thank you both for this great advice! *I am not kinesthetic at.all. ...so could really relate to what Ellie said.⤠-Rebecca
  12. I accidentally posted a similar question in the special needs section of the board. I have a six year old first grader who is showing signs of dyslexia and possible dyscalculia. She is a twin and my eighth child. I have found a rhythm of math that works for our family- that has included a start in Horizons Math. However, I am wondering if I should place this child in Math-U-See next year? I have never used Math-U-See... but I am wondering if it is a better choice for a child who struggles with memory? Does anyone have any experience to share? My other question is if I should just keep working with Horizons slowly and methodically... Thank you so much for any help. -Rebecca

Thank you!!! I did not mean to suggest that you hadn't searched for the current troop carefully!!! It was just the initial thought that I had. It is so hard when things change. -feeling it with you!- -Rebecca

P.S. It is significant to rank First Class. I am not able to get my thoughts out in a clear manner. Is it the rank where all the Life Skills have been obtained? It is a good stopping point- especially for someone who has been committed to Scouting. This is one of the reasons why I supported reaching the rank before quitting.

I didn't read all the responses, but we are also a Scouting family. Yes, I would finish First Class. I also wouldn't be hesitant at all to look for a different Troop in your area if you feel like that might be the issue truly at heart. I just reread your initial post. Honestly, I would look for a different Troop. Our Troop would NEVER hold up a Scout's advancement like that. I completely understand the burden that BBQ would be!!!!! and my husband is a CPA also - and our one and only fundraiser is a mulch sale that is also occurring right now and for the next few weeks... We had to find a new troop in a new state when we moved five years ago- and we visited several to get a "feel" for each one. It is worth it to visit! So, in summary- I am so sorry- but yes, I think you should help your son reach First Class. I also think you should consider a different Troop- unless your son is really done with Scouts (which is okay, too.) ((hugs)) Rebecca
  16. I also think that test prep can absolutely raise an ACT composite score.
  17. Thinking of you and so, so terribly sorry.😢😢😢
  18. Hello! I have a little daughter currently in first grade. I suspect pretty severe dyslexia and also maybe dyscalculia. She cannot remember numbers. She cannot count to twenty perfectly, yet. She cannot add without a number line or manipulatives. She does not remember. She cannot always remember how to spell her name. I am planning for next year and wondering what math curriculum I should choose. Is Math-U-See a good choice? I noticed Simply Classical recommends Rod and Staff. She is my eighth child. I use Horizons workbooks, then Saxon Math, then Teaching Textbooks with my other students. My other children have not had a problem with <<< that sequence- but I don't feel certain for her. I could just take it very slowly (which I have been doing) and provide a lot of support- but I intuitively feel that she needs more reinforcement to help her visualize and conceptualize the facts... I am already planning to switch her to All About Reading (which I have also never used before). I do have an older daughter who I also think has dyslexia- but she is strong in math and has never had any problem. She is one of my strongest math students. I am working on finding a place to have both of them evaluated- but I wanted to ask... What math should I choose? Thank you for your help! Rebecca
  19. My daughter was treated with Cipro two years ago...around age 12... due to a resistant strain of pseudomonas. It was the only antibiotic that would work other than IV. :( She does have an affected tendon from the medicine. It is her achilles and it is definitely directly related to the antibiotic.
  20. Has anyone looked at The Potter's School for Computer classes? My son is taking Intro to Computer Programming there this year- and we are planning either C++ next year, or Game Programming I. They also have a Java course with a supplement for an AP track. I also looked at Derek Owens- but when I looked/contacted him- his course was not yet online. I see ^^^ that it now is. Interested in anyone's thoughts. Rebecca
  21. Online AP classes are offered through: The Potter's School(TPS) HSLDA Academy Debra Bell's AIM Academy
  22. Dear Busymama7, I have been thinking about you. I just want you to know that hormone therapy can lead to blood clotting issues/problems. you mentioned the progesterone in an earlier thread and going off of it. It is wise to be very aware of your body/any potential issues with hormone replacement therapy. Any kind of hormone supplement can make the blood thicker. This was told to me by my primary care doctor who stated that she advises all of her patients on any kind of HRT to take a baby aspirin every day. I just wanted to let you know this. I am thinking of you and I hope you are feeling better. -Rebecca
  23. I have two students taking courses at The Potter's School this year and we are definitely planning to take courses for 2018-19. My senior is taking Creative Writing with Ms. Gaines. Great experience! My freshman is taking Intro to Computer Programming with Mr. Gray. Great experience! The Potter's School meets a huge need for me in the area of Advanced Technology/Computer Programming classes. The have rigorous high school classes with proven statistics in the AP courses. They also have a diploma program. Their prices are reasonable. The platform has been fine. This year was our year to try online classes and I have experienced several different formats from CANVAS to The Potter's School GP6 to PA Homeschoolers own personal platform. They all have their own benefits. The Creative Writing class has a lot more interaction than the Programming class. In Creative Writing, my son often is split into study rooms with groups of students- they are able to read their work out loud. They utilize the microphones on their headsets in a controlled/organized way. The two I have in these two classes are strong students- so I don't have much to say about the work load. They both love their particular classes so they are very motivated. I hope this helps! Rebecca
