  1. Just wanted to join this thread because our region's awards were announced today and my son was awarded three silver keys and an honorable mention! Very proud of him! The silver keys were for: personal memoir; short story; and science fiction/fantasy The honorable mention was for science fiction/fantasy This was the first year we knew about this- and he is senior. All in all, so glad he entered. Rebecca
  2. I use a transcript that has semester grades. If you still need help, send me a message. Have you created an activities resume? This might be something he could bring that would also help. Rebecca
  3. Thank you so much. Yes, I am currently homeschooling her 100%. She is in a diploma program through our local Christian school that she will continue to be in until graduation. I plan to begin outsourcing next year (9th grade)- I think. It is not definite. I do not have an official, clinical diagnosis for her. So it seems that needs to be my first step. She does not have a 504. She does not have an IEP. I went to a dyslexia seminar/information session in 2016 and I learned a lot there. I need to research the children's hospitals and find where I can have these two children assessed. This is very much on my mind because I have a six year old daughter who is showing much, much more severe signs of dyslexia. I think my older daughter might have a processing disorder with mild to moderate dyslexia. She struggles to understand and also to communicate what she knows and feels. Thank you so much for the links, research, and btdt experiences! Rebecca
  4. How do you get accommodations for dyslexia on tests like the SAT, etc? My daughter will be a freshman this fall and this is the first time I am facing this. Thank you!!!
  5. Please update if you can!!!
  6. How is your dd this morning?
  7. I also recommend the red book and The Princeton Review book. There are youtube videos that offer a lot of targeted help as well. She probably just needs to learn how the test "thinks." Go over every practice test mistake with her using the two books above. Use youtube to learn specific strategies that can help her in the Reading section. :) Rebecca
  8. The fever returning is a sign to watch for with the flu. It is a sign that can indicate secondary infection. How is she now? Do you have an on call pediatrician you can call?
  9. I would like to know the answer(s) to this as well. I think this step is in my future. I currently tutor online and in person.
  10. Thinking of you, hornblower.â¤â¤â¤
  11. So, I missed the thread with the early access to PSAT scores and have been waiting for this day only to find out(today) our state's scores release tomorrow. Does anyone know why this is? I find the PSAT score release so frustrating.
  12. I didn't quote properly. So sorry. I was trying to respond to the idea that stress and suicide is a negative factor/consideration toward attending an elite or selective school.
  13. Beyond the financial aspects, there is the toll on the student while attending a school where they are struggling to maintain good grades based on the level of demand placed upon them? Suicide on campus due to extreme stress is a real factor affecting more college students. While obviously not applicable to all, its none the less a problem. The article referenced above included real life cases of those difficulties. The suicide rates at some of these select schools are the highest in the nation. So it is a consideration. Here's another on the topic: Top 50 Colleges With The Most Stressed Out Student Bodies. And there are other factors to consider as well mentioned in the above articles. ETA: Please understand I'm not implying attending an elite school is a bad thing especially for the right fit. In some cases its the best place for a student to be which I think is what most people assume. More Elite = Always Better Option. The point is in 'some' cases that may not be true even if they are accepted. And here are some reasons why. Just a note to say, I attended one of the schools(with family and friends also who attended) on that list and I have personal friends who attended others, and I have never heard of anyone having issues with stress or suicide. I checked the link out, looking to see if my son's schools were listed, and was astonished to see my school there. I think that the college selection process should be focused on the individual student in light of financial circumstances. The best possible choices available matter. I do not think it should be about elite / non-elite in a blanket statement manner. Clearly, financial provisions are a defining factor. They are not the only factor.
  14. Also AP Language with Mrs. Serbicki and AP Lit with Maya Inspektor offer creative writing opportunities. The AP Language has creative non fiction options. HtH, Rebecca
  15. The Potter's School! They have summer classes and full year. My son is taking the full year course. Highly recommended! Rebecca
  16. For live online classes, I have children really enjoying The Potter's School and also HSLDA Academy Online this year. I have one in Introduction to Computer Programming at TPS. He loves it. Another son is in Creative Writing at TPS. He also loves it. This one is special because they break off into study rooms to use the headsets/microphones and share their work with each other. AP class at HSLDA. Live lecture with chat and study group opportunities. Student Cafe on the Student homepage, also. My son is enjoying it. HTH, Rebecca
  17. I think so. My son uploaded a personal statement about what homeschooling has meant to him. We also put information about the three siblings that the CommonApp did not provide enough room to list. I would also check the FAQ. There might be suggestions there.
  18. I thought this was great!! Thank you for sharing.
  19. Please help me know how to send these... Is it ok if the transcript is sent in a regular business sized envelope or should it be sent in a 9 by 12 (for example)? How do you make the envelope appear official/appropriate? I have to send this to several schools. Thank you for your help, Rebecca
  20. I disagree and suggest revision like this: Steve walked into the store; he bought some milk, but forgot the eggs. As Regentrude noted- the "and" is not correct with the semi-colon and would need to be removed for correct usage I think this sentence as is is technically a comma splice which is a form of a run-on sentence. Steve walked into the store, and he bought some milk, but he forgot the eggs. semi colons can be used to separate two independent clauses they can also be used two pair two similar/equal ideas next to each other in a sentence they can be used to provide distinction/separation/definition in a sentence with multiple commas
  21. I just went thru and read everything. I almost posted about PreCalc. Yes!! This!! We are doing this, too. We are having a bumpy time in PreCalc. Mainly, I think, because my son has been resistant to utilizing the textbook! - Rebecca
  22. I did not read the responses... I have had two go through TT Geography so far. The textbook is essential. The student must use the textbook alongside the CD Rom instruction. Hth, Rebecca
  23. I laughed so hard I cried/am crying. Broccoli!! Peas!!! Who knew?!?! ðŸ¡ðŸ¡ðŸ¡
  24. Blueridge, I am so very sorry!ðŸ™ðŸ™ðŸ™ðŸ™ðŸ™
