  1. We plan to use MFW ECC in the fall. We are doing Adventures this year and we enjoy it a lot.
  2. My daughter turns 2 this summer. This fall, I would like to find activities that would occupy her while I do school with my older kids. She is a BUSY toddler and loves to tear up books, run around dumping out toys, etc. I thought about purchasing the Toddler preschool pack from MFW. Does anyone else own it? Would like to hear the pros/cons, along with how it captures your child's attention.
  3. We are using Apologia Flying Creatures with MFW Adventures this year. It has been an excellent fit. The science that comes with Adventures is just WAY too light in my opinion. It is the type of science my child used in Kinder in public school, he already knew all of it!! We do 2 days a week of Flying Creatures (usually about 1/2 hour), and the assigned MFW Adventures science ( 1-2 days per week, takes about 10 minutes). My kids prefer the Apologia Science and CHEER when I get it out. We are using the Junior Notebook. I make copies of the coloring pages/copywork pages for my 4 & 5 year old to complete. However the rest of the notebook is just completed by my 2nd grader.
  4. I moved to Missouri just a few months ago. I was told that a record log was REQUIRED?? So, I began to chart my hours. I am also using MFW Adventures. Any educational activity (PE - riding bikes, Reading with Mom, watching educational TV, etc) all can be counted for hours. Soccer practice/game? Things like that can count too.
  5. My concern is how the Common Core with affect homeschoolers (especially those that do not use CC aligned curriculum) when our children take the ACT/SAT and go to college. From the articles I've read that are pro-CC, they say the changes will even effect colleges and college admittance testing eventually.
  6. I'm doing some planning for the fall. My 8 year old with be in 3rd grade. This year we completed the Mind Benders (book 2) for Logic. I got complaints that it was too easy and every problem was the same. We recently started "Detective Club" which has been more challenging - he at least can't complete it in under 5 minutes like the Mind Benders book!! I'm curious what everyone else prefers for Logic for a gifted/accelerated child? I'm looking for something that is affordable and easy to implement. Thanks!
  7. We are planning to use MFW ECC for the fall with my science loving 3rd grader. I too am considering adding Apologia Science to go along with what ECC contains. We did Apologia Flying Creatures this year with MFW Adventures and that combination has been great. We've learned A LOT and my kids LOVE "flying" science time.
  8. Anyone every used MFW 1st with both a "first grader" and a "kindergartner"? My 5 year old has easily completed all of the MFW K work this year. I would prefer just to move on and combine them both for MFW 1st too, instead of repeating MFW K again. The 5 year old can sound out most 3 letter words, but not fluently reading.
  9. I preordered MFW 1st and received it last week. I flipped through the materials and I was surprised to see that the deluxe set doesn't include any read-a-louds. We are currently finished MFW Adventures (deluxe) and MFW K (not deluxe) so I just assumed the deluxe MFW 1st would include some read a louds too. Anyways, I plan to add Horizons Math to MFW 1st, we also did Horizons K this year. And we will probably continue with Explode the Code books, because I feel they are a great resource to easily review phonics rules in a fun way (my kids LOVE Explode the Code).
  10. We did 2 math programs this year for my DS for 2nd grade, Horizons and Singapore. My DS LOVES math and I was unsure which type of math would be best for him. I thought we'd "try out" both Singapore and Horizons to find a good fit. However, he's enjoyed doing both and has requested we do both again next year. So I guess we'll do 2 again.
  11. We're finished FLL 2. When thinking about curriculum next school year, we'll probably move on to FLL 3. But I saw there is a teacher's book and a students book for this level. Are both books necessary? Is it similar in structure to FLL 2?
  12. Anyone use Rod and Staff spelling for gifted/advanced pupil? My child will be starting 3rd grade in the fall. We have used R & S Spelling Grade 3 this year. He says it is too easy. I am trying to decide if we should use R & S again in the fall. If so, do you think we should jump to Grade 5? Is R & S a good fit for advanced/gifted students? Is it ok to jump over a "grade" in their spelling? Do I need the teacher's book (I did not use it this year)? Any other spelling books that would be similar to R & S? Here's what I'm looking for: 1. Can be completed mostly independently. 2. Not too time consuming each day (right now it takes about 5-10 minutes 3x per week) 3. inexpensive 4. teaches about root words, suffixes, etc.
  13. My child is in 2nd grade this year and it is our first year homeschooling. I received info about Stanford testing being offered in the area. The same forum said that testing is beneficial for children to prepare for later required tests, even though testing is not required in my state. So, I am curious about other's opinions on the pros/cons of testing in general? And the pros/cons of the Stanford test? Is it a good idea to test a 2nd grader or just wait until child is older?? Thank you!
  14. We rented BIlly Bank's kids exercise DVD from our library for free. The kids have LOVED it.
  15. We are most of the way finished with our first year of homeschooling. In the fall, my son has requested a music curriculum that would teach him to play the recorder. I need it to be affordable and easy to implement. He is currently taking piano lessons. And our previous music curriculum has been listening to songs and discussing composers. He now wants to learn to play more of it.
  16. My child went to public school for K and 1st. After receiving Adventures for his 2nd grade year, I looked through the science. 99% of it was things that he had learned while in K and 1st and he also retained most of it. The science in Adventures is also very short, not a lot of reading. So this year we've gone over most of the Adventures science, but we also added Apologia Flying Creatures 2x per week. It has been a good fit. The MFW science (while usually scheduled for 2 days) we combined into 1 day per week. So we're doing science 3 days a week which is very doable.
  17. My 2nd grader is set to finish Book 8 in the Explode the Code series. We've used them for phonics practice/review. He enjoys the books a lot and is reading way above his 2nd grade level. I am curious what I should do after the last Explode the Code book. Should I start a vocabulary workbook? Is there anymore Phonics that we need to learn? Should we do a reading comprehension workbook? Looking for suggestions that are quick, fun, and easy to teach....similar to what Explode the Code was!!
  18. We're moving near St Louis later this year. I was curious if anyone else lived in the area or if you were personally involved with any co-ops? Also, how is Missouri in terms of treating homeschoolers? I currently live in an area where (for the most) homeschooling is not considered weird. Many of the area attractions (Zoo, museums, etc) have homeschool days and there are many co-ops to pick from.
  19. This is our first year homeschooling & we are approaching our 50th day of school! The kids are excited and I wanted to do a couple extra activities for the day. Any ideas or suggestions are welcome!!
  20. IMO, we bought the teacher's guide for level 2. The Guide was used for the 1st lesson and not since.
