  1. You lucky duck!! Wishing your son a super score! Mary
  2. WE do it like Jean too! PE is Pass/Fail. :iagree: Mary
  3. We have used them for three years and sometimes you have to close it all and reopen. We have good/excellent internet service as well but there are still some technical things to endure as there are with almost ALL online courses.... I would call the 800 number directly and see if they are experiencing difficulties rather than wait on a tech person. The program is excellent at teaching the language so if you can endure the inevitable freezes or "lags" it is worth it! Mary
  4. Make chocolate dipped strawberries. Melt choc chips with butter in microwave ad dip. Place on waxed paper to dry. Yummy! Mary
  5. I think the best price new is through Pearson's OASIS but here's another place: http://www.bywayofthefamily.com/searchprods.asp I have rarely seen this single item for sale used; it's usually with the book when sold used. Mary
  6. We did early testing with SAT thru UD Talent Search at age 10. It built confidence and also allowed ds to earn some nice Honors from the group. Not something that hurts! Personally, I'M the one burnt out with standardized testing at this point not ds;). I think there is some value in this early testing but caution is necessary too. Also wouldn't suggest taking the PSAT more than twice since it is an easier test than the SAT and really only counts Junior Year anyway. My opinion is that ACT and SAT testing can be done annually as you would the ITBS or Stanford etc. Scores for younger students ARE wiped out as another poster has said. If you want a score retained you have to take steps to do so. Same goes for AP tests taken more than four years before graduation. It is fun to see how well these younger students do on these tests! 7. Just a couple of tidbits that might be interesting: The "Dragonfly" book isn't a Campbell book...the authors are Miller and Levine. Btw, Campbell is now deceased. The publisher continues with the spin offs though!! Another big fan of the big Campbell for AP. Mary
  8. Perhaps the game is a way for her to relieve some of the stress? Sure sounds like she is a well rounded, conscientious and thoughtful young woman handling a lot. Unless you see signs of the game changing "who" she is, I wouldn't worry. I have a son pretty much in the same situation and the gaming is his release! Mary
  9. The tutor she talked with is flat out wrong. You can take as long as you want to finish the course or go as quickly as you like. Sometimes, at the beginning of the year, they have "new" tutors who are not yet aware of all the "different" types of students taking these courses. If still in doubt, email or talk with Sabine Lewis directly. HTH! Mary
  10. While I am only familiar with LOF Calculus, my two cents is that it is more a matter of style than rigor. LOF covers all the material as do other books. THe student who can grasp the concepts verbally and w/o many worked examples will do well with LOF, imo. (We use it for comic relief but not as the core text, btw.) My only concern with using this for Algebra would be making sure the student is exposed to a variety of questions in the standardized test"format" so that it isn't a surprise come test time. I do think that working problems for other books is a huge plus for any student no matter what book is being used. When we used Singapore we did problems from the dreaded Saxon and other books too. Same with Jacobs and Foerester. Making sure the student is well grounded in algebra should be the goal and level of rigor kinda falls by the wayside, if you get my point. Now, I didn't really answer your question, did I? Mary
  11. We called it Honors as well by doing all the problems as you suggest. Mary
  12. Neat. These look like the old Standard Deviant DVDs now online! Mary
  13. My father was like this with Alzheimer's. It is best to not argue or try to dissuade them from what they are seeing, hearing, thinking but kinda humorously "play along", ask simple engaging questions. I know you don't want more drugs but Aricept virtually eliminated these hallucinations and nightmares for my Dad. Everyone reacts differently to this drug, though. WIsh I had more to offer. Mary
  14. http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/vpchange.asp Snopes "yellow": Biden stepping down
  15. Carrot...now how on earth do they get this??
  16. Heartwarming and thrilling news! This has just got to help with stress reduction. Thank the Lord and prayers for continued improvements. Be well! Mary
  17. They sell to homeschoolers but you will need to set up an account with OASIS and have the ISBN numbers for all components to insert into the OASIS ordering site. This is one of the best publishers for selling all ancillary items to homeschooler, imho. https://oasis.pearson.com/ordering/oaLogin.aspx HTH! Mary
  18. It is interesting to note how the John Gatto link on the accelerated learner board "fits" in here... http://67.202.21.157/forums/showthread.php?t=56625 My cynical self kinda agrees that we are getting the public "education" that has been targeted. Back in the dark ages when I was in college I transfered from a great small liberal arts college where all exams were essay and you were required to do presentations and projects TO a state school (because I was in love and stupid!) where ALL testing was multiple choice. I was surprised but also came away with 4.0 all the time. Fast forward and I ended up in a career in college textbook publishing for 20 years. The demise of the quality of education became instantly apparent there. Professors (most) wanted all the publisher developed, "canned" materials for their classes including the tests, paper topics and answers etc. And publishers gave it to them and more and more each year. We could never have a college textbook that didn't pass an 8th grade reading level and they really preferred 7th. Sales reps got rich off of commissions on remedial math (Lial) and study skills "manuals" that were generated to fill the void. This not not a new problem. It began back in the 70's and has just continued to compound. If our colleges are like this (not all are, I know) then I wonder what the future holds. Only those best "trained" will move on. I thank the Lord for homeschooling and jokingly asked dh last week on the way to an adm session for MIT whether or not homeschooling college might be in the future! Mary
  19. My understanding is that a majority of people do 6-7 a year but we have always done 8-9 a year of "academic" credits not including music, art, theatre or pe. For what it is worth, our umbrella school limits credits to 10 a year, excluding non-academic courses. I personally think you are fine. HTH, Mary
  20. Excellent! Gatto is the best and so many tips included here for homeschoolers too. Thanks for sharing!! Mary
  21. I've ordered from Pearson (PH titles) using OASIS. Here's a link where you can create an account and then use the ISBN to place your order. https://oasis.pearson.com/ordering/oaLogin.aspx HTH! Mary
  22. Here's the ISBN: 0201861003 I think you can purchase it through OASIS with Pearson. http://www.pearsonschool.com/index.cfm?locator=PSZ15d&PMDbSiteID=2781&PMDbSolutionID=6724&PMDbSubSolutionId=6732&PMDbCategoryId=806&PMDbProgramId=21022&level=4&prognav=cl Mary
  23. Seconding Shari's suggestion. Jeremy Brett is the best Sherlock, imo! Mary
