You might take a look at the Physics for Scientists and Engineers offered at Kinetic Books. http://www.kineticbooks.com/products/textbook/text_levels.html We recently completed the Principles of Physics course and it offered a good range of problems including very challenging honors level material. Kolbe has a course plan for the intro as well as the Principles of Physics but not the calculus based third level. Mary

Thank you ladies!!! Great help. Much appreciated. Mary

Ah, thanks to your hubbie, KidsHappen, for that piece of info. I wonder if it would handle simple games like Lord of the Rings? I suspect it's not suitable for WOW though... These computers are so reasonably priced! Thanks for your help!! Mary

Wow! Thanks for such a fast reply and for the positive news. Would this machine handle any gaming and maybe college homework for a kid who is going to study engineering??? I don't have any specific programs to ask about... Mary

A young teen friend of the family is searching to buy his first laptop with hard earned dollars and is considering an Acer since you get "more for your money". Has anyone owned an Acer and have any feedback to share? Many thanks! Mary

TI-83 is just fine! That's what ds used. I think the only ones not allowed are the ones with the keyboard-like pad but I know for a fact that TI-84, 84, 92 are allowed. Good luck! Mary

Is there a way to use email to fax documents?
MaryM replied to secular_mom's topic in General Education Discussion Board
If you sign up for a service you can do this. Sometimes you can use the "free trial".... http://www.myfax.com/fax/freetrial.asp?gclid=CJPUwIv2w5gCFQS7sgodmkHh2A Mary -
We have had success at Ebay as well as the sale forum here...They have become more popular in the past three years so they do go quickly plus the new format at Thinkwell is cutting down on "used" CDs. Which ones in particular are you searching for?? Mary

Google the US Copyright Office and you will find all that you really never wanted to know but the main section is here:http://www.copyright.gov/title17/92chap4.pdf Many moons ago when I was in publishing it was common knowledge that you could place the copyright symbol, date and name on the cover page and that protected you for "x" number of days till you filled official registration. I think it was a period of three months but the link above should have the specifics. I WOULD do this if I were your son, just to be safe! Congrats to him for writing the play! Mary

Green Chemistry Labs AND ChemLab virtual labs
MaryM replied to Hilary in MI's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Hilary, We found the student materials to be sufficient. The full blown program allows you to create your own labs which was beyond us!! The program is self-explanatory and well developed. M -

Just labs... go to the link in the OP and your can navigate to the current price. We used this about three years ago so there probably has been some change in price. We used this for Labs and then a couple of Chem books: Singapore and the MGH book by Chang. M -

We used the Model science ChemLabs and I thought they were excellent! (I still remember the one on pricing a gallon of oil.) Many are fairly adanced so depending upon your student you would need to make some selections and offer some guidance. BUt all in all, I would (and have) recommend them. Mary -

Thanks all! So many good plays! Yet, so few that come to mind with a 16 y/o role for a guy, no? It's that "tween" age from the middle school plays and adult hits. Still working on it though! Appreciate your patience and your ideas! M -

Thanks, Denise! I think anything that is 20th century is contemporary enough... Truman sounds intriguing! Our challenge is "age appropriate"...this is for a very mature 14 y/o in a college class. Yahoo Answers suggested Brighton Beach Memoirs or Master Harold and the Boys. These plays do have teenage male characters. Wonder if any others come to mind now? Thanks again to everyone for helping out. Any further ideas are always welcome! Mary -

THANKS so much!! I really appreciate your suggestion. While I know that I'm not going to find most contemporary plays online, what I needed was some direction, like this, to allow us to order a few plays and peruse them to see what fits him.(Guess I failed to successfully communicate this in my original post. Sorry.) I will certainly have ds spend time reading your link and checking out a potential monologue. Thanks again, teachmom3, for you quick and helpful reply! Mary -

Thanks, Jenny. Living in the middle of no where means no bookstores of any size, however. If anyone has ANY names, that would be very helpful!! M -
Any suggestions for a contemporary monologue for a 16 y/o guy? Ds is taking his very first acting/theatre class and needs to find a monologue to study and perform from a contemporary play. Living in the boonies, we just don't have the opportunity for theatre so we really need some helpful suggestions. I tried Googling but not much luck. Please, no "gay" roles - that was what the search seemed to pull up unfortunately. No musicals allowed. Our library is no help either, sadly.... Thanks so much for any suggestions you can provide. He has to make a selection by Wednesday. Mary

The College Board publishes previous essay prompts. You can search for past year's but here's a start: http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/sat/after/essay_prompts.html I also saw somewhere (can't find it now...) some essays that were critiqued and "graded" as samples. Maybe someone else will help with those links. Mary
