I just want to let you know that OSU German Online seems to be working very well. We are in German II. The boys just had their first tutoring session with OSU German Online and did very well. They seemed so grown-up! Anyway, for those of you who wonder about German programs OSU German is a great option.

I've looked through many posts re: OSU German... how are those who are taking it this year feeling? From what I have read it seems that if you have a "dud" student/teacher you can request another ... and that you often have to ask for the weekly call-ins to include conversational German as opposed to just worksheet review... What else do we need to know? I have an upcoming 8th grader who wants to start German this coming year. She will also be taking French for the 2nd year... would this be a good choice? If she takes one class per year, she'll need to start this yearto reach the AP

Does anyone know of online German grammar quizes that might be keyed to or similar in scope and sequence to German Online? I'm comparing the ability to do grammar/vocab drills in our Lukeion Latin class using Quia games with German Online and wishing that the OSU German course had something similar. My kids have a tendency to fill out the worksheets once, but not really learn/master the grammatical concepts. It seems that they have developed a fill in the blank mentality without realizing that these are paradigms and concepts that they need to understand and apply to new vocabulary.

My rising 9th grader has shown some interest in learning German. We already study Arabic formally, I think he will have a full schedule next year academically, so I wanted to find something he could do as a fun thing (no credit, or perhaps partial credit). Also preferably something that was inexpensive ;) . If he really takes a shine to it then maybe we can reconsider it as a possible elective in subsequent years.. Any ideas? Also, are there students here studying two foreign languages at once?

Ds (10th grade) has done nearly 3 years of Spanish and wants to quit. He's a musician with plans to attend a music school, so he really won't "need" a foreign language for school. However, certain languages are helpful for music. These include French, German, and Italian. He loves the idea of studying German and would like to participate in a music program in Germany one day. I speak Spanish. :glare: Really, really well. :D I have NO background in German. What resources could he use, independently, that would give him a good foundation for the next 2 years of high school, and would be pre

Hello to all other families using OSU German online.... In the Teacher's Outline, it talks about partner and class activities...When both of mine were doing German, they would do those together (even though they were on different levels it was possible to use a text). Now that we only have one at home, she is not getting that extra speaking practice.... So I started wondering about WTM folks whose students would be interested in doing that by online video chat..... It's probably easiest to work out with just one partner, but I thought that with this thread, people could meet each other who

My dd was grade 6 last year and completed German I with OSU. She did very well (98%) and I felt her progress was excellent. At times we were frustrated by the lack of grammar instruction (they use a more immersion/inductive approach) but, overall, I was pleased. This year (German II) is a whole different story. They've switched her over to their "new" program (I'm not sure how it differs from the old) and it is so confusing. I'm not sure if this is because of the switch, or the program itself, but I suspect the latter. Right now she is on the review section. She is supposed to be rev

My 8th grader has been learning Spanish, but all along he's been saying he'd rather learn German. But I don't know German... Meanwhile -- in my search for an "outside" class for the accountability factor, I keep seeing how popular OSU's German program is. It occurred to me that this might be a win-win. Can you review your experience with this program? In your view, and your student's, what are the pros and cons? Which levels did you use, and if your child took the SAT II or AP, how did he/she do? Is there any way for a rising 9th grader to get all the way through the AP level? It i

What do you like about it? What are the drawbacks? Ds the 8th grader is ready to start his foreign language studies (He has to do a year of Henle Latin in high school as well) and while I am comfortable helping my children with Spanish, French, and Latin...I DON'T HAVE A CLUE ABOUT GERMAN! The good news is that if I can get him a solid, easy to implement program (not that the work is easy, but just that it isn't going to be difficult to get going with), I can get him some tutoring because we live only 40 minutes from Frankenmuth (the big, now touristy German settlement) and the Lutheran Sc

Dd14 started German 2 with Oklahoma State this year. She had been using the Barron's German tapes, Level 2, and weekly tutoring sessions with a fellow homeschooler who is a native German speaker. She was halfway through the tapes but a little frustrated with the emphasis on "business traveler" German, and my friend had life changes that made it impossible to continue tutoring sessions. Anyhow she is a little unhappy with the Young Adult tone of the readings so far; she dislikes having to learn the vocabulary for Vampire Romances, and feels it's a little demeaning. But what I'm unhappy abou

I asked ds's German teacher how they compare and this is the scale she gave...the German she is teaching is the OSU program. I don't know if that translates with all other language programs as there can be vast differences in high school language programs... "I (teacher speaking) would equate the levels about like this: German 1 = A1 - A2 German 2 = A2 - B1 German 3 and 4 = B1 - B2 AP German = B2 – C1" Joan

Would someone please tell me how long the weekly phone call lasts? Is it all conversational practice? Thanks. Caroline

We just purchased this program for dd(15). Have you ever had trouble with the program lagging or freezing up? I've e-mailed support but have not heard back yet. DD is frustrated and DH is wanting our money back. We have excellent internet service so the problem has to be with their servers... Please tell me this gets better!

Dd is making excellent grades and good progress in this program, having completed day 31's lesson (out of 150). So she had her weekly teleconference with the OSU tutor, and was told that she needs to pick up the pace to finish this course in a semester. It's my understanding that it's a year long course...am I correct? Dd could certainly complete it much more quickly but her course load this year combined with her musical theater involvement leaves her wanting to relax on German a bit and let it take most of the school year. Is it a year long course? Do the tutors generally push the kids t
