There is a yahoo group that sells used MUS. You can post WTB as well. They go quickly though and hold their value. The group is MUSSwap.

I think you would start with the TWSS and SWI B for those ages.
-
We just started this last week. I love it so far. I bought (used) the TWSS and SWI B for my 4th and 5th graders. My oldest hates to write and he loved Mr. Pudewa. The Student dvds where he is teaching directly to the student has helped tremendously. I will eventually watch all of the dvds in TWSS so I can learn the process and learn how to teach but the SWI helped me get started right away. I rank this purchase as one of the best purchases of my homeschooling career.

Can someone help me compare these History curriculums?...
Lori in MS replied to Sue G in PA's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
As far as a more challenging history "spine", MFW uses Streams of Civ 1, which is a 9th grade text, and Augustus Caesar's World. It uses Usborne's Medieval World as well, but I have very easily added Kingfisher History Encyclopedia for my older ones, although it isn't assigned. (They use Streams of Civ for the older ones but my kids wanted some color so I added Kingfisher). As I said there are a lot of book basket books/independant reading books listed to check out at the library for the older ones. For Rome Francis Schaffer's book was recommended How Should We Then Live? The Rise and Fall of Western Thought and Culture. That the World May Know DVD series is also recommended. These of course are not a part of the package, but it is nice to have a list of suggestions of DVDS, audios, and books. -

Yes, it is very Christ centered and Biblically integrated. While studying Rome you also study the life of Christ and Paul through reading Luke and Acts. You also study how the Bible came to be. Church history is interwoven as well using Trial and Triumph which contains short biographies of Christian martyrs. There are also memory verses assigned from Romans, I Corinthians 13, Phil 2 etc. I have been very pleased with the Biblical content but I have only looked at samples of MOH so it's difficult to make a direct comparison. -

MFW Rome to Reformation would be perfect for your children. The book basket list is extensive with books for all levels. If you have a 7th grader (is your 12 yo 7th grade?) they do their own science (such as Apologia general) and have other assignments for 7th (MFW suggests using PP guides during the year). If you already have a lot of the books you could just get a TM. It is worth it for the weekly plans and the book basket list, plus the Appendix notebooking pages to photocopy. there is a MFW used curriculum yahoo group and you could ask if anyone is willing to sell just the TM and the books you don't have. -
Yes, SWB did say to skip the dressups. She said to do the assignments in IEW because the teaching on structure was good.

Please advise me. My 5th grader will complete R&S 4 this spring. He does very well. I'm trying to decide if I should switch to AG. The reason I would is that it takes less time and I would have time to do other types of LA, literature analysis, writing etc. Yet I like R&S a lot. It's cheaper. It just takes too long. We already do most of it orally except diagramming and the tests. Should I switch to AG or stay with R&S? We are doing IEW for writing so it would just be for grammar. If I stay with R&S can I skip a book or should I go with 5? My son is in 5th grade this year but he is an older 5th grader. He will be 12 in September of his 6th grade year. Thank you,

I would love to see some samples for FLL 4. I checked Peacehill Press but didn't see them.

Apologia Elementary Science questions...
Lori in MS replied to Sue G in PA's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We love Apologia here! We are almost finished with Astronomy. This is the first science program my children have actually liked. We are doing Zoology 1 next. I also bought the kit from Creation sensation, as well as the birdhouse kit. I have Zoology 2 also and my oldest son loves to read it for fun. They have remembered amazing detail from our Astronomy study. Even the 6 year old remembers interesting details about each planet. We do a book in half a year. -
We love My Father's World here. I use their K and 1st grade to teach reading and do one of the 2nd-8th grade programs for the older ones. They also have written the 1st year of their high school program which is done mostly independantly by the student. Other things we like that are not teacher intensive FLL 1-4 MathUSee Singapore Primary Math Latina Christiana Lori

FLL 3..Does anyone notice that material
Lori in MS replied to BarbinTN's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I am using FLL3 with a 4th grader, but it is not hard for him. He is learning a lot of new things but it isn't a struggle. Also having all of the diagram forms etc means there is a lot less writing. My 5th grader is doing R&S 4 as well and I find myself liking the explanations in FLL 3 a lot better. -
To go on to RS 7 or do something else?
Lori in MS replied to Stirsmommy's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I am also changing from R&S to Analytical Grammar next year. We will do IEW for my older children and SWB"S new book for grammar stage. -
We do MUS and Singapore. Singapore is colorful, different, and fun. It also approaches the problems in a different way. It's also inexpensive!

I think a 7th grader could do the Precept studies or the In and Out. You could start with a shorter book or one that he is interested in. Or you could do one of the Inductive Study Series. It doesn't take a lot of time but is very thorough.
-
Yes! You really need both. The exercises and diagram forms are printed in the workbook for them to fill out.

I'm planning to do FLL 1-4. I think you could go to R&S 5 after that. My oldest did FLL, then R&S 3 and 4. My second son is doing FLL 3. He is doing much better with that than he did with R&S 3. We stopped at lesson 40 of R&S and switched. It was too overwhelming for him.

Who's planning on buying Susan's new writing instruction book?
Lori in MS replied to Jodi-FL's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I need the logic stage book so I will have to wait. I think the first volume is designed to go alongside FLL 3 although FLL3 does have dictation and narration. I would like to look at it. Maybe you could just get the text and do it with FLL 3 and 4 . You might not have to have the workbooks. -
Is Analytical Grammar as thorough as R&S?
Lori in MS replied to Lenora in MD's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Someone please answer. I need to know this too. I have been using R&S and am considering a switch to AG. -
I've been looking at MFW and have a couple of question...
Lori in MS replied to Lisa in SC's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Yes the art and music is scheduled in CTG. THey use God and the history of art and match the lessons to the time period in history. About CTG though, the Bible is the main textbook, and they also celebrate the Biblical feasts so you get to experience Jewish culture. It was a fascinating experience to celebrate the passover and see how Jesus fulfilled it. We also compared the passover to the Last Supper He had with his disciples. I didn't realize that He was explaining what the passover symbolized when He talked about the New Covenant. Anyway we really enjoyed the Biblical History in CTG. We did the program as written and listened to SOTW 1 CDs
