  1. Now that Writing with Skill is completed, will Writing with Style be SWB's next project? Any estimates on when it will be available?
  2. Yes. i am using it for my dyslexic son and he is doing very well with it.
  3. Thank you for your replies! He does have speech issues and has been in the school's speech therapy program for 2 years.
  4. I don't know where to post so I am putting this on both boards. I have a friend whose 8 year old son is in public school. He can't read at all. She wants to homeschool him. I am trying to help her get started, but don't know exactly how. I gave him the Barton screening. He passed section A, but failed B and C. He could clap 2 syllable words, but not 3 or 4 syllables. He would either not hear all of the syllables (he said video had 1 syllable) or he would forget the number. He clapped alligator correctly, but then said it had 3 syllables. When we put out a tile for each syllable, then he could count them and get the correct number. In part C he had trouble distinguishing sounds (said m and n were the same, and could not distinguish i and e). He would also get the order wrong or make up a sound that I didn't say. Please help me to know how to advise this family. Quote MultiQuote Edit

  6. No advice, but I would like some answers. I am in this situation myself. I need a break, but my children are behind and really need to go all summer. With 6 children (one of them 2 years old) I can't seem to get everything done in 9-10 months.
  7. Where are the Classifieds policies? Do you have to be a member to buy? Do you have to have 50 posts to buy or just to sell?
  8. Here is a great recipe 1 cup almond milk or regular milk 1 frozen banana 1 Tbsp ground flax seed 2 cups raw spinach Makes a delicious green smoothie ( you don't taste the spinach) Add a few blueberries or strawberries if desired. You can also add 1-2 Tbsp plain greek yogurt for a creamy consistency.
  9. I think WWS is fine for 10th grade. I used it this year with my 10th grade and 9th grade sons. I combined it will Essentials in Writing which taught various types of essays and the research paper. We didn't get to all of it this year as they had an outsourced speech class that required a lot of time, but I plan to have them complete it this summer. Next year (11th and 10th grades) we will do WWS 2. I will also have them do Lit analysis SWB style with the literature they will be reading, I hope to squeeze in WWS 3 if it is ready in time. Or I might do Advanced Communication Series from Excellence in Writing. I am going to do a better job teaching writing with my younger children. I love SWB's writing materials. She just didn't quite have them written in time for my oldest ds.
  10. Yes, MFW high school is different in that the difficulty level increases with each grade and depends upon you learning the writing lessons from the previous year. I would not do US History in 9th either.
  11. If he has mastered Algebra 1, I don't see why not.http://www.virtualhomeschoolgroup.com has a live online class and well as an at your own pace class. My ds will be doing their online class this fall. He did VHG for Biology and enjoyed the lectures and interaction with the teacher and other students.
  12. Don't have much advice. but just wanted to say that I identify with you about having to spend so much time with the younger ones. My high schoolers are on their own for a lot of their subjects. Public schools are not good here so that is not an option. I am very committed to homeschooling too, but this year has been incredibly difficult.
  13. I am using this with my middle schoolers and high schoolers. Don't worry about them being behind. If they don't know it, they need to learn it. SWB said if WWS 1-3 is completed, the student will be prepared for 90% of college level writing.

  15. We have loved http://www.virtualhomeschoolgroup.com for science. They have live online classes and at your own pace classes, where you watch videotaped lectures. It goes along with the Apologia textbooks, and is free. The tests are done online and the grading is done for you. This has made science totally independent for my ds.
