  1. I agree with this. Sending her to public school is not necessarily going to solve the problem. It may even add more problems that you wouldn't encounter in homeschooling.
  2. With all of this discussion about logic stage history and outlining I wonder how the logic stage writing book and workbooks will be set up. Will the sections to outline be included in the workbook or will they reference the history books referred to in the WTM? I have thoroughly enjoyed WWE because it is not tied to history. Not all 5th graders will be doing Ancients. Just wonderinig because I think this will affect what history spine I choose for logic stage, If the outlining selections are included in the workbook and they are getting outlining practice with WWS, then I might choose a narrative style logic stage history book for reading to make history more enjoyable.
  3. My 9 yr old ds is doing the WWE workbook 2 It covers copywork, dictation, narration, and how to write a 2-3 sentence summary of an excerpt from literature. It is perfect for him and so easy for me to implement because it is scripted and gives examples of summaries. The first level of Writing Strands is 3. I wait until 4th grade or later to start it. My 5th and 6th graders do WWE 3 days per week (3rd and 4th levels) and Writing Strands 2 days. They are reluctant writers but are making progress with these programs.
  4. As far as grammar goes, FLL through level 4 is complete. I am now doing WWE along with it for writing. I believe that with these 2 resources all you need for LA is a spelling program and good books to read (after learning to read is mastered ).
  5. I am using FLL 4 with my 5th grader. It includes memorization and is thorough. He has already done the first 20 lessons. We switched to FLL 3 last year after a few months of R&S 3. He was not getting it. FLL 3 and 4 have been a success for him.
  6. I think the concept of finding the main idea in a story or paragraph is what is taught gradually in WWE 2-4. I know it's not in outline form, but they practice stating in 1-2 sentences the main idea of the selection that is read. It also will probably become easier to teach this once we get SWB's logic stage writing book. I am looking forward to it, but it will be too late for my oldest ds so I am going to have to do something else with him.
  7. Here is the link. It was on the page describing the WWE instructor's text for levels 1-4 http://www.peacehillpress.com/index.asp?PageAction=Custom&ID=15
  8. My son does this too. I just left him alone and let him do it his way. This is what I recommend. I taught him the traditional way so he knew it. If for some reason it was too hard for him to figure out the other way he did it on paper the traditional way. It wasn't a problem. When I add mentally I always start with the hundreds. It's much easier mentally to do it that way. My dad was a whiz at mental math and he always did it that way too.
  9. Phonics, Handwriting, Math, Bible, read alouds. Everything else he joins in with older siblings when he wants to.
  10. Is there any obligation to buy it if you sign up for the preview?
  11. I second completing MUS through Zeta. I also let ds watch all of the different ways to do the problem, but we then settled on the way that he understood the best. He then completed the problems that way.
  12. Francine Rivers Her series on Rome is fabulous! I can't think of the name of the Trilogy. Brock and Bodie Thoene I love their A.D. Chronicles!
  13. I have a 12 year old and I don't think it is light. For Creation to Greeks the Bible, Streams of Civilization, and Victor's Journey through the Bible are spines. If you flesh that out with the book basket books (especially selecting some literature) I think it will be fine. MFW's philosophy is to have a strong academic program, but also to leave time during the day for other activities such as service projects, learning skills, pursuing other interests, etc. They don't believe you should be doing formal academics all day long. Their children have all turned out well, are fluent in Russian (they were missionaries there for 8 years) succeed in college, and some of them help them run their business. I have enjoyed talking with them when I visit their booth.
  14. MFW Creation to Greeks might work for you. It is rich in Biblical history and celebrating the Old Testament feasts is so fun, but not overwhelming. It is open and go if you do a few preparations at the beginning of the year. You have to find library books and choose the independant reading for each child. You can choose from their book list in the back of the manual. I like that flexibility. The only thing is that MFW includes music, art, and science if you get the deluxe package. I am only using their science for half of the year this year so I find it is worth it even if I don't use their science.
  15. Don't rush the academics and enjoy your children when they are young. Have a lot of fun.
  16. I don't buy many extra books. This year I haven't bought any. We don't have a great library but I have requested lots of l books through Interlibrary Loan and have been able to get almost all of them.
  17. I've found it very easy to combine grades. I have 6th, 5th, 3rd, 1st and 2 yr old. We do the Bible, history, and science together. I do not require the younger ones to listen to the more advanced books. I use the book basket and give independant reading assignments appropriate for each child. I choose picture books and easy readers for the younger ones. For the older ones I get more advanced book basket books and assign them historical fiction, biographies, and/or literature to read on their own. It's nice that we are all studying the same topics and can discuss it together.
  18. We also like the Apologia elementary books. These are my boys favorites.
  19. I like having a coop for the subjects I can't seem to do at home. For us that is art and Spanish.
  20. Here is another verse Titus 3:4-7 But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us richly through Christ Jesus our Savior, so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. I also wanted to clarify that the meaning of hope in the Bible is different than how we often think of it. It is not wishing that something would happen but it is a confident assurance and expectation of something that will certainly come to pass because Jesus accomplished it for us and paid the full price for our redemption so we could be adopted into His family. Romans chapter 4 talks about this as well. Jesus often spoke in metaphors so we could understand better. One of these was that He is the shepherd who gives His life for His sheep (those who believe in Him) Here is a verse that says once we belong to Him we are His forever. John 10:27-28 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me: and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish: and no one will snatch them out of My hand. John 11:25 Jesus said, " I am the resurrection and the life: he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die.
  21. I love the Inductive Study Bible that actually teaches you how to study and record what you learn. http://www.precept.org sells it.
  22. He's a 12 yr old 6th grader. He has trouble writing several paragraphs but the other skills I think he is okay with.
