  1. it's sad how wrongly people are treated according to various stereotypes. Sorry you went through that. I dress casually, no makeup and am short and fat and I get ignored all the time at "better" stores. Guess I don't fit the consumer mold of what they're all looking for. Nan
  2. I have this dinky, crappy Ecko (Ekco? LOL) cupcake baking pan. It has no room on it to grab it out of the oven with an oven mitt, or pad. I'm always getting into the cupcakes. Does anybody know of a good cupcake baking pan? I've thought about setting it on a cookie sheet, but then I might have to wash that, too! Nan
  3. :grouphug: Just a hug and some hope for you. Our friend's son is BP and he has done extremely well on Intuniv. He is like a different child. And if Intuniv isn't the one, there are others. Don't give up. The earlier children are treated the better the outcome. My ds, autism, not bipolar, had some severe behavioral problems as a VERY young child...like 3. PLEASE no flames, but he was put on meds at that age, and has done VERY well. He's still on meds, and is well behaved, sweet, and a wonderful child. all the aggression was helped tremendously with meds. We spared him years of unhappiness. Trust your gut. You know your child and your doctors. We don't. Please keep us posted on everything. Nan
  4. Would you post a picture of this? It sounds wonderful! Nan
  5. :grouphug: Don't beat yourself up over this. Of course you would have stayed had you known. You can't blame yourself for something you didn't know! The coach should have told you in advance. What if you had wanted to tape it? Photograph the moment? It sounds like a very uncomfortable setting, and it's understandable why you left. I highly doubt your child will be traumatized by this. Honest. Even a sensitive child. If you don't amke a big deal about it, it won't be a big deal to your child. (Not the award, the missed presentation.) You're a wonderful mom or you wouldn't have felt badly. Let it go, and suggest to the coach that parents are told in advance next time. Nan
  6. Horizons or Saxon? I've been spoiled (see rant below! LOL) with TT having the DVD do the teaching and although we've done both Saxon (taught in public school) and Horizons, I don't really know which directions would be clearer for me. By clearer, I mean scripted so it's easy to explain to my ds. Also, are the manipulatives needed for Saxon 5/4? While I'm at it, a TT rant. My ds, who is 11 and in 5th grade, just completed TT5. He BARELY tested into Saxon 5/4. Is he mathy? No. But really...He can NOT generalize from the predictable presentations of TT math problems to the same problems presented in a different format, such as in the Saxon placement test. My G-d. I feel like we wasted an entire year of math with TT 5! The ONLY good thing about our year with TT5 was that he is no longer math phobic. But I feel like he slipped even further behind after a year of TT. And here, he was loving it and I thought it was the perfect curriculum for him. :( I feel like I failed my son . Why didn't I realize he wasn't really learning the concepts...just memorizing what to do? Now, looking back, I think he just tuned out the lectures and did the problems. I'm so upset. And this wans't even done independently! I sat the entire year with him and went through the problems with him. One.by.one. When he left public school mid third grade he was right on grade level with math. Now, beginning 6th grade, at home, he's slipped to almost 2 years behind! So many concepts on the placement test aren't even in mid TT 6! I don't trust TT enough anymore to continue with it. :crying: Nan
  7. OK I am debating moving from TT6 (we just started it) to either Horizons or Saxon. Hive says Horizons 5 would probably be ok to switch to for a kiddo in TT 6 (of course I will use a placement test if we decide on Horizons). Now where does Saxon fit in all this? Above grade level? On grade level? Below grade level? Would I switch to Saxon 5/4 from TT 6 ? Yes, I will do a placement test, just trying to get a general feel for now. TIA! nan
  8. I'm thinking of going from Teaching Textbooks 6 to Horizons. Would I need to drop a grade to 5? Thanks! Nan
  9. I think seeing so many incorrect examples does something weird to the brain, and I find this technique helps me sort it all out. It also helps me in the spelling sections that are similar. It's great she does fine in her own work. I really doubt it's a concept problem. Julie D. I agree. I hate the format of standardized testing. Very confusing and unnecessarily complicated if you ask me. (Which you didn't! LOL). If she does well on her regular work, I wouldn't be too concerned. Nan
  10. DS is 11. Not a mathy kid. His major area of weakness is not knowing his mult/div facts. He picks up on things pretty quickly, though. We started homeschooling mid-3rd grade and used K12 math. He had been using Saxon 3 in public school and was doing OK with it. K12 Math freaked him out. It moved too quickly, and he hated it. As part of a cyberschool that first year, we felt very pressured to keep up, especially with Math. So, in 4th grade we switched to Horizons 4. Well, I should have used Horizons 3 because there were topics he hadn't covered yet. Difficult year in math, and he hated it. BUT he liked Horizons itself. The level just seemed too difficult. OK, this past year (5th) we used Teaching Textbooks. He liked it a lot. Math phobia disappeared. Here's the issue. We finished TT 5 early and began TT 6. I was disappointed, to be honest. Almost half the book is review of TT 5. It just feels like we are spending tons of time reviewing things he knows pretty well. And I don't feel like TT is teaching him to generalize his knowledge. He is getting so used to the way TT presents things, like word problems, he's stumped if he sees a word problem in a different context. I was thinking of going back to Horizons 5 this coming year. I know for sure he's not ready for Horizons 6 since many of the topics haven't been covered in TT 5. I don't like jumping around, but my gut keeps telling me that although he's doing well with TT, he's not getting enough review of the things he needs to, and too much review of things he can do well. Advice? Nan
  11. That's exactly why we use the workbook. It's all right there. It follows a nice sequence and it's ready to go. nan
  12. Around here we are encouraged to call the fire department. No. matter. what.(Of course I'm talking about true concerns, not false reporting) Yes, it's an all volunteer, but excellent fire department. They have always said they would rather get a call that turns out to be nothing, than not get a call that turns out to be something. As dry as the weather has been, (at least here) I would have stopped and called right away.Things can get out of control quickly. But that's just me. Nan
  13. How about using something like Teaching Textbooks 6? Most here say it's a year"behind". So, you'd probably be doing math right at his 5th grade level? Just a thought. Nan
  14. We just got this and I think it looks great. It sort of reminds me of K12 Spelling, which I have always loved. I even love how it's bound! :001_smile: Nan
  15. Nan, Headmistress of the Happy Hamster Homeschool!
  16. I don't have a picture, but we use the Konos Wall Timeline. and the Konos Timeline Figures (we only have American History and Explorers on it so far.) THis year we're doing the Ancients. Yes, our sequence is tad messed up! LOL HTH! Nan http://www.konos.com/histheroes/timelinechart.htm
