  1. would get you close enough to walk to many places - Boston Museum of Science, Boston Common, State House, Faneuil Hall http://www.nps.gov/bost/historyculture/fh.htm but if not, stay someplace you can walk to the T and take the train & buy a T pass so you don't have to stand in line to get a token to get on the train at popular stations (gov't. station). Atlantic Ave. may get you close enough to walk but it's not a great location (unless it's very close to the Aquarium/Marriott longwarf).
  2. lays a strong basic math foundation but spends too little time on algebra. That basic strong foundation is the success of R&S math and also for higher math. But R&S math 7 & 8 only cover algebra in the last chapters of the books and there is no time to reinforce those lessons because math then ends for the year. CLE math starts algebra in grade 5 from the beginning and reinforces those basic algebra concepts all year. CLE math 7 is much more advanced than R&S math 7 & 8 in algebra and geometry. Compare the scope and sequence of math 1-8 of several math programs to get a better picture. That's what I did before I switched my gr. 5 ds to CLE math.
  3. QUOTE=Janice Lyn;51665]Ladies, After reading the lastest thread on this today, I am concerned with the comments that grade 7 and 8 are not good preparation and a student could not go directly into upper level math. Janice Janice, It's a matter of degree - good, better or best. R&S math is a GOOD math program. What is good for one dc may not be good for another dc. My ds went from R&S math 8 into algebra and is doing fine. But I found a math program (CLE) that will do a better job for US. After comparing several math programs, I found that most homeschool math includes algebra earlier and more of it than R&S math. My standard R&S math advice is that after R&S math 6 choose a pre-algebra program from another source than R&S. It depends on which algebra program your dc takes after grade 8 - there are easy and more difficult algebra programs (TT vs. Chalkdust, etc.). Which algebra program you go to after R&S math will also determine whether R&S math was sufficient for YOUR dc or not. Also it depends on your family's goals of what level of difficulty of math is acceptable to get you where you want to go. Your dc's goals do not require high math skills. Blessings,
  4. interest on savings or on loans, figuring montly;cost of installment buying; calculating interest for months, etc. CLE math 8 is due out this summer so I don't know what's in it. CLE math 7 scope & sequence is available to view along with samples on the CLE yahoo group. R&S math is mastery and CLE math is spiral. So you don't get personal finance in one chapter in CLE. It would be difficult to jump to CLE math 7 from R&S math because CLE starts algebra and more advanced geometry in grade 5 unlike R&S math (which does lower level algebra & geometry).
  5. or algebra. R&S math 7 & 8 doesn't spend enough time on pre-algebra imho. Look at Saxon, BJU, or CLE math. CLE math 7 would be more difficult to move into but would prepare your dc better for higher math than R&S.
  6. Many people go back to school late in life and succeed in whatever they chose to pursue. Find out what she would like to attend college for and then help her figure out what she needs to get there. She many not need to pass a SAT to get into a comm. college. Blessings,
  7. is where I would suggest you start the series. Jumping in at 7 or 8 would be too difficult imho.
  8. books, audio or videos inspire us. We also watch United Streaming videos too. One foot in front of the other...
  9. You get United Str. don't you? There are many videos you could watch to supplement your program.
  10. and usually helps older ds with algebra.
  11. Will teach you all these things plus more in 15 weeks. It's a reader/workbook program with a answer key. Join CLE yahoo group to look at the detailed scope & sequence in the files and samples of gr. 7 in the photos (which is similar to gr.8).
  12. A Teen's Guide to the Episcopal Church, Jenifer Gamber with my 2 dc. I highly recommend it. I bought it at a church convention; it was recommended to me by a young lady that attends Trinity Church, Boston. The downloadable leader guide is from Church Publishing which I haven't purchased. I have 2 copies of the book and we use it along with The Book of Common Prayer and our weekly church bulletin.
  13. which I think is a good program but for my next ds switched to CLE math because I think CLE math will prepare ds for higher math better than R&S math does. Join CLE yahoo group to see samples in the photos of the group.
  14. is what we are using this year for grade 8. They make a great combo for us. Read the high school board for my comments on IEW.
  15. I bought IEW TWSS and SWI A when older ds was in grade 5 and tried it and didn't care for it(no lesson plans for it then) and put it aside. Then in his gr.7, I bought IEW U.S. History Lessons and tried it and loved that we weren't dependent on the dvd's and could teach it slowly just following the TM and using his SM. Yes, I believe that you can just use the history based writing lessons never having watched the IEW dvds. Just read the TM BEFORE you teach the lesson - it's a step by step process. If you get stuck, just ask on the IEW yahoo group. We love the vocabulary cards that come with the U.S. History lessons. I've just begun the SWI A with my 5th grader.
  16. We had PTIW I and tried it for 2-3 mo in spring '07 before I sold it. We then began IEW U.S. History Based Writing lessons v1 and have been using it since with my now 8th grader. I highly recommend IEW! It's much more explicit in the "what and how" to write than PTIW. I HIGHLY recommend you go to the IEW website and look at ALL the lessons plans for each program. Then join IEW families yahoo group and spend time with the MANY files to help you use/chose IEW before you buy. There also is a used IEW sale group.
  17. but I wouldn't suggest skipping ANY of the levels after this. R&S English 5-7 are the most important to master.
  18. Then I switched my younger ds to CLE math 5; he used R&S math 1-4. R&S math is mastery based and CLE math is spiral. CLE math prepares dc for higher math (algebra & geometry)better than R&S math imho. I bought CLE math 5-7 to make sure I wanted to switch away from R&S BEFORE we made the switch. I'm very pleased w/CLE math. Join the CLE yahoo group to see samples http://groups.yahoo.com/group/christianlightfamilies/
  19. along with lit. analysis, critical thinking, vocabulary and more. I highly recommend it! http://groups.yahoo.com/group/christianlightfamilies/
  20. CLE reading is all those things except #6 isn't included. Join the CLE yahoo group to see the detailed scope & sequence charts in the files and samples in the photo sections of the group. The CLE website isn't very good but you could call them for a sample & catalog. They will send ONE lightunit out for free. I highly recommend CLE reading. We're currently using gr. 5 & 8 (used 4 & 7 last yr). Check out Hewitt Homeschooling history programs. P.S. I just sold LL&C 7 and still own SL 100 (bought and never used).
