  1. My dh needed it done. They also recommended a different toothpaste that is supposed to help with that. It should help prevent more serious gum disease, if I understand correctly.
  2. Dh and I call back and forth when he is overseas, but our phone plan is international, so it covers that. I don't know otherwise.
  3. I'm excited to have all these new suggestions. I haven't seen a lot of these before. I am currently reading Louise Penny's Inspector Gamache series as soon as each one gets free from the library, and was wondering what I would read when I'm done.
  4. Oh good grief! Yes, it is, I don't know how that came out as Sayer!! Going now to change it.
  5. The Pioneer Woman has a recipe in one of her cookbooks that I like a lot, but I can't find it online. I usually use frozen butternut squash because it's easier than cutting up one and I don't have them fresh from the garden. Anyway, cube the squash and sauté it in butter. When it is tender, add kale, salt, pepper, and some chili powder, and put the top on the pot until the kale wilts.
  6. Oh, I have also enjoyed The Vanderbeekers books. Along the lines of The Penderwicks.
  7. Well, that, but also I've been meaning to join for awhile. I may not stay if it gets too stressful and I decide I'd rather bury my head for sanity's sake, but I will try it.
  8. I would like to join the politics board, but I don't remember how.
  9. Have you read Elizabeth Gaskell's books? North and South is good, as are the others. My favorite, however, is Wives and Daughters. The character development is so good. She takes her characters from being rather flat to full-fledged humans--kind of like we do in real life as we get to know people. Wilkie Collin's The Moonstone and The Woman in White A newer book is Daniel Nayeri's Everything Sad is Untrue. Autobiographical and has Christian themes. When I started it, I was a little befuddled at the acclaims it was getting because it was a little hard to get into. But it is actually using the circular way of thinking of many peoples in the world, and building on each circle. Then at one point, bam! it all starts coming together and is riveting from that point on.
  10. Just an FYI, my dh travels a lot internationally. Hotel internet services (domestic and foreign) tend to be less secure, so he always uses hotspots for his computer access rather than the hotel's connection.
  11. In my defense, I have had a nasty cold, and am just beginning to feel better, so I'm behind on all the things pertaining to house upkeep. I usually try to keep the mail, etc., off the table, because we only have one table for eating from besides the one outside, so I want it to look nice and not have to be cleared for eating. In general, though, today is the first fall weather we have had, and I usually wait until closer to the end of October to put out my fall decor. I don't have a lot; just a wreath I made and a few other things. I'm not as big on seasonal decor as many, in part because I don't really like to dust.
  12. There are a couple of cloth napkins, some mail I need to sort through, and two candles on a woven mat that I keep there all the time.
  13. Sadly, I did not discover The Well-Trained Mind and this website until I was well into our homeschooling journey. But even then, I lurked here for 2-3 years, then finally joined the board. Other boardies introduced me to curriculum choices I had never heard of anywhere else, and it definitely enriched the schooling we had left. The mindset was just different here than other places I had encountered, and I loved the way it expanded our options and ways of viewing things. There is so much wisdom here. My homeschooling days have been over for awhile, and I don't go to the other forums here anymore, but I am here on the Chat Board several times a day--more, if something I find extra-interesting is going on. Some threads are fun and frivolous, others are deadly serious. Book recommendations, recipes, resources, product endorsements, and just about any need you have for information, explanations, or support, there is someone here who knows about it or can find it for you. I have learned so much, and consider this group my "tribe" possibly more than I have ever found in real life, outside of university life. Don't take that to mean that we all agree or anything, because things can get snarky and heated here, but this board has stretched me and taught me a lot, and I consider these folks to be my friends.
  14. Every single time I scroll by this post, I think how I'd be in this wonderfully moist chocolate cake I sometimes make. I know somebody referenced something like that above, but it is still where my mind goes. For years, because we travelled and lived overseas, I did not have my nice wedding flatware with us. I was so excited to finally get it out and start using it; it's heavy and feels so nice in the hand. Not-so-surprisingly, I suppose, I have found us missing some of these nice pieces, especially the spoons. It makes me a bit angry, because I was taught to take care of things, and tried to teach my kids the same, but I believe one in particular is the most guilty. And it is not on the priority list for replacement. I suspect they have ended up in the garbage. I tried to make sure the kids only took our cheaper stuff when they took a fork or spoon to use with a packed lunch, but I suspect we lost some that way as well.
  15. Thank you for sharing her with us. I hope you have an opportunity to share your thoughts about her with her children and husband.
  16. It was on one of the papers they gave me, but I'm not sure which vaccine or why. It might have been for the shingles.
  17. I am so sorry. This whole thing has been so crazy.
  18. I think I saw something on the papers about not taking allergy medicine when getting the vaccines. Unfortunately, I saw it afterwards, and had taken a Claritin the night before.
  19. They told me (at two different places) it was not a problem. When I was talking to the pharmacist about it, he said that I might feel bad both times either way, so it was just up to me. I decided I'd rather just deal with it. I made sure I didn't have anything on the schedule that was important, and went for it.
  20. This reminded me of the other day--I had had vaccines, and both my shoulders were sore. Dh started to pat me on the shoulder or something, and I immediately shot my arms up in a defensive gesture. It caught us both completely off guard, and we laughed, of course. But it was thought-provoking to me how instinctive the movement was. Someone who has been trained would be more likely to have that type of reaction. On situational awareness--I was very intentional in teaching my girls, especially, to be aware of who and what is around them. I may have made them a bit hyper vigilant in the process. But we lived where subtle attacks on women were very common, and not-so-subtle ones were somewhat common. I taught them that how you carry yourself can easily tell someone else if you are an easy target or not. Of course, some might see that confidence as a challenge, sigh, so it isn't a completely foolproof approach, but I felt that the awareness could at least lower their chances of being a victim. It's hard.
  21. Dh and I got ours last week, but we took a big whammy in getting flu, covid, and 1st shingles shot at the same time. Arm soreness and fatigue for me with some slight nausea. Flu-ish feelings for dh for a day or two. I have gotten the flu and covid vaccines together for several years without problems, so I think it was the shingles that cause reactions for me. But I was just ready to get it taken care of.
  22. Many years ago, I had all four cut out and was not put under. It was manageable, but I certainly wouldn't have needed to drive myself home, so he might want to rethink that part. He needs to stay on top of the pain meds. I had the bright idea that I would wait until I needed the Tylenol with codeine rather than taking it immediately upon getting home like the doctor had said. That was unwise. It took awhile to get the pain back under control. After that, I only needed regular Tylenol, but I did try to stay on top of it better. Ice packs, soft/cold foods, especially ice cream or smoothies without seeds (like no strawberry seeds).
  23. Congratulations! This is the type of job I want.
