  1. Awesome! I LOVE LOVE LOVE your card with the tree branches and snow and the elves with the hope candle.
  2. You can highlight and take notes on the Kindle. We have a Kindle touch and the very basic Kindle. The Kindle touch is MUCH easier to use for highlighting and notetaking. To highlight, you press on touch the first word you want to highlight (hold it there for a second) and the swipe the words/lines you want to highlight. When you release, you can choose to highlight or make a note for that selection. To write the note, the screen comes up with a virtual keyboard that you type on by touching the letters (like on a smart phone). The paperwhite version appears to have a touch screen so it probably works the same way. On the basic Kindle (the one with the button on the bottom, you have to use the button to scroll down to the place you want to start, push the button to bring up the menu, choose highlight, and then push the arrow part of the button to highlight the words. To make a note, you have to use a virtual keyboard and push the arrow buttons repeatedly to move the cursor to the letters you need. It takes forever to write a couple of words. I would NOT recommend the basic Kindle if you want to use the highlighting and notetaking features.
  3. Well, it is almost 3pm. All that has been done is cleaning the kitchen, and I didn't even do it. DH and I decided last minute to go shopping. We traditionally get everyone pajamas, which are wrapped and opened on Christmas Eve. We ended up finding all of the kids' pajamas, dress shoes and tights for DD4 (she was just given 4 new condition Christmas dresses), and some Christmas earrings for DD13. When we got home, we found that a stray dog walked into our house when DD13 opened the door to someone looking for its home. She decided to let him stay. So, her and I took him for a walk and found his home. So while we didn't get much done, getting some of the shopping out of the way was good. Finding the dog's home was also good. I found out that he's gotten out before, so I strongly suggested that they get him a tag with their phone number on it.
  4. :iagree: I'm the same way. You might hear profanity once a year around here. I certainly wouldn't want my kids hearing it and picking up on it...meaning either using it themselves because they heard it or internalizing a negative message.
  5. I'm in. Not planning on doing any shopping tomorrow, so I expect to be home all day. Pull turkey carcass apart and freeze for soup Clean kitchen (most of it is clean but need to finish up because handyman is coming tomorrow) Get a box ready to send and take it to the post office Fold laundry (have four loads to put away) Wash more laundry Work on Santa Breakfast posters (have to make 5 more) Work on DS6's apron Clean master bathroom Do more packing Renew children's museum membership
  6. We had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We did the cooking here and then carried everything over to our neighbor's house after he got home from work. After finishing up the last minute stuff, we ate over there, cleaned up, and watched a movie. It was so nice all around.
  7. I've only used a brine once in the 20 years I've been cooking. We felt that the meat was way too salty and the gravy made from the drippings was completely unusable.
  8. I took and finished a photography class offered free though our library system. I finally know how to use my camera. I'm now taking another photography class through the library. It is the same teacher as the first class and teaches many of the same things, but the focus is on photographing people. I made an apron for my four year old. I bought the main fabric probably 8-9 months ago and finally got around to doing it. I'm not a seamstress; it took about a week to make what some people can do in an hour. But it is done, and she likes it.
  9. :iagree: I play this game with friends at a retreat once or twice a year. One year every time it was my my turn to judge, I chose the winning card solely on which one made a specific friend laugh the most. She has the best laugh! No one could figure out how I was making my choices. LOL There are a lot of references in the adult game that I don't get either. I just use those cards as throw away cards. If I don't have a good card to play anyway, I throw away one of the bad cards. It works out fine.
  10. We live at just about 150% of the federal poverty level for our family size. With the exception of health care, we live comfortably enough. We have decent housing in a decent neighborhood, plenty of food, and all of our bills paid. Keeping everyone adequately clothed is doable. A few areas aren't budgeted for but we always end up with extra income beyond our monthly average just when we need it. We'd almost be able to afford health insurance premiums (but not deductibles/copays) if we didn't have debt; most of our debt was accrued during a period when we had no income at all or another period where we lived below the poverty line for about a year. We live on a cash budget now (ie. no cash, no buy) and are slowly chipping away at that debt. We'd feel really tight at 133/% of the federal poverty level and poor at 100%.
  11. The attitude makes me think that you need to let her fail. If you change the class for her, or make her change the class, her anger towards you will just grow. If she loses the scholarship and you can't afford that, she'll need to find a way to get the money herself even if it means dropping out of school and getting a job.
  12. We are staying in Lacey. The new house (a rental again), is just 3.5 miles away. We are really excited about the new house. Not only does it fit our needs, it has some of our wants, as well.
  13. I finished DD4's apron. I'm so happy. I promised the kids their own apron many months ago. I was going to have a friend do them, but it took me so long to get the fabric that I decided not to bother her. Now that we are moving, I decided I needed to something to distract me and help me procrastinate from packing. Despite my lack of experience and ability and the not so straight stitching, it came out really cute.
  14. Happy Birthday, Jean! I'll tackle with you today: Breakfast of some kind. How to be a Superstar Student (watch next segment with bigs) Have bigs do math Remind bigs to read Lord of the Flies School with littles Finish DD4's apron Clean kitchen Bake something with DD4 so she can use her new apron Pack a box or two Laundry Take overdue book to library Gather Thanksgiving recipes Call about turkey Create Thanksgiving shopping list Dinner
  15. I had difficulty falling asleep and would typically lie awake until 1-2am if I was lucky. Some nights I would be up until 4-5am. Melatonin took an hour and a half to work, but I would fall asleep. Then I would wake up three hours later and be up for the rest of the night. So melatonin just delayed the problem for me. I was ridiculed for it at the time, but I'll share it anyway.... My husband usually left his cell phone on the nightstand next to the bed (sound off). I prefer the alarm on my cell phone to my regular alarm clock, so I started leaving my cell phone on the nightstand as an alarm. Again, the sound was off. We were not using the cell phones; they just sat on the night stands with the sound off. I decided to try leaving my cell phone in the living room. At my request, my husband did the same. That first night was the first night that I fell asleep within half an hour in many years. And I slept without any problems. It's been five months, and I haven't had problems with insomnia since...with one exception...a went camping with my son and forgot to turn off my cell. It was 4am before I realized my phone was on and turned it off. I was asleep within thirty minutes. I do not leave cell phones, wireless routers, wireless computers/laptops, etc. to be left in my room anymore unless they are turned off.
  16. I pretty much don't talk to my mom at all. It's a choice she made when she remarried. Her husband does not consider me a worthwhile person for her to know because I'm not a member of their church denomination. Usually I hear from her about once a year, but a couple of years have gone by since her last contact. She didn't attend my wedding. My understanding is that her church does not allow members to enter another denomination's church building for any reason. She met my eldest child, then 2 months old, when I flew down there to see my grandmother one last time before she died. She has never met my husband or other kids. She makes no attempt to have a relationship with them...no calls, no gifts, no letters, no cards, nothing.
  17. Happy Birthday, Jean! I hope you have a wonderful day.
  18. Based on my experience with my church and previous churches that put on public events: Yes, you can go regardless of your intentions of converting or not. It's meant to be a service to the community and a way of letting the community know they are there. I would hope guests would be polite. I would hope a non-believer to either accept any literature with a thank you and a smile (you can toss it later). If taking the literature is too difficult, I would hope it would be declined politely. I would hope guests would not argue with the hosts about religion or make any critical and unkind remarks about the hosts' beliefs or intelligence. If the hosts are not kind and polite, I would hope the guests would not hold it against all Christians.
  19. In my state, we have to file a Declaration of Intent to homeschool form every year. I ask the store if they offer teacher discounts and if homeschoolers qualify, using my form as proof. They either accept the form, or they issue their own card. I got my JoAnn's teacher discount by applying for it online, since that is what they require.
  20. I live in the Seattle area. I like jackets that have the layers built in like this one. You can use the fleece and shell together, just the shell if it is warm and rainy, or just the fleece if it is cool and dry. ETA: You can get cheaper ones than Columbia, but it was the first one I found. Columbia is a good brand. Kohl's has similar jackets for $100.
  21. I learned to drive both an automatic and 5 speed stick when I was a teen. I owned manual transmission cars exclusively until we bought a minivan that happened to be automatic. I don't mind driving either kind of transmission, though, I prefer stick on those rare days we get snow.
  22. Smoothie: 1 cup blueberry juice 3 frozen strawberries 1/3 cup frozen blueberries 1/3 cup frozen blackberries 2-3 chunks frozen pineapple 1/2 banana a carrot a handful of spinach I try to have one of these about five days a week. I took a week off because I couldn't stand the idea of having something cold for breakfast. But these smoothies really make a difference in the amount of pain I'm in.
  23. Dh: No hobbies other than playing Civilization. Works in IT...I couldn't possibly know what he wants/needs for technology because he takes care of that Buys his own clothes (he doesn't like what I think looks good on him, what he chooses to wear is not flattering) Doesn't read much Amazon wish list has 7 items on it, 4 of which are out of our budget* Never mentions things he would like to have or is interested in * Last time I bought something on his wish list, he NEVER used it.
  24. No insurance and limited funds. I go to the doctor when it is something major. Everything I've read is that toes, except for the big toe, can be treated at home. So, that's what I'm doing.
