  1. I want our school year to end the Friday before Memorial Day weekend, but it looks like we will have to go on a little while longer to finish up WWE, and MFW.:tongue_smilie:
  2. I haven't considered one, just because I spend too much time on this board and then there's The Homeschool Lounge, and Heart of the Matter Online that I like as well. Not to mention my blog. If I get into too many other things, my buns are going to growing to this computer chair!
  3. I've recently been lurking on the Highschool board, and to my surprise, there are alot of people who like BJU for science. We did a semester of Apologia Zoo 1, and my kids weren't very "engaged" with it. I just purchased BJU Science 2 yesterday, and we are going to try that and see how it works out. I've read the TM and it is VERY engaging and colorful, with easy fun activites, Perfect for the age and stage of my dc. If we like it, we might stick with it!:001_smile:
  4. I was doing Saxon and switched for 2weeks to Horizons and then back to Saxon because of what you mentioned. The TM is totally scripted for you and I bought the big manipulative box of goodies that go along with it. It is a complete thorough program, and you will be able to "teach" your child math. Just read the script and do the TM, and you will be a Math Teacher in an instant!:D HTH
  5. We have been using it this year, for a 5 and 6 year old. The younger one did Beginnings I, it is really geared to be read aloud to the child. In Beginnings II, my 6 yr old was able to read the story, pencil in fill in the blanks, had a little discussion, and prayed. There is no prep work, it's open and go, it only took me about 3 min to make sure his anwers were right. I don't know what level you are considering, but I hope this helps.:001_smile:
  6. Do you think he has done any activity that has caused him to pull a muscle? When I was 16 I had these on again off again pains in that area, I went to the dr. and come to find out I had pulled a muscle. I was precribed a muscle relaxer. Thinking back, I realized I had pulled it as I was helping my mom take down our Christmas tree. I had reached up high to get an ornament. Does he have any other symptoms? If he does or starts to show signs of anything else (fever, fatigue, increased pain ) I would get him an appt. ASAP. HTH:001_smile:
  7. First of all, I want to say that I absolutely love Saxon Math, due to the ease of everything being right at my finger tips, and more importantly, the scripted lessons, because it gives me the ability to really teach the concepts. I'm the WORST verbal communicator, so anything that helps me communicate is GOOD. With that being said, my ds is working a year ahead in Math, it concerns me that after he finishes Saxon 3, he might not be ready for Saxon 5/4 at age eight. I've looked at it, and while I have no doubt that he could understand the concepts, I just don't know if he is ready for the different layout of 5/4. He LOVES the colorfulness of BJU curriculum, and I can get most of the components for atleast 1/2 price at a local used homeschool supply store. I think BJU Math 4 could be a good fit for him, because of the workbook approach, instead of writing out the problems, and the number of problems. But the thing that is making me nervous is the TM. Will it give me the "right" words to say to be able to teach him well? I noticed that there are manipulatives for some grades, do grades 4 and up have manipulatives that go along with the program? What is the prep time like? I'm really nervous about even considering anything other than Saxon. Can I say that again? I'm really nervous about considering anything other than Saxon. Any advice for a scripted loving Mom, but who wants the best for her academically advanced son, who might not be ready emotionally/physically for Saxon 5/4, who is drooling over the "look" of BJU?:D
  8. I read Because of Winn-Dixie as a read aloud last year to my then 5 and 6 yr old. We listened to the audio of The Tale of Despereaux, they ABSOLUTELY loved the audio book. To this day they still talk about it and even repeat lines from it!:001_smile:
  9. Have you seen Moving Beyond the Page's Learning thru Literature that you can use as an enrichment to your readings? They have quite a few to go with your titles that you have chosen . We are doing these with The Sign of the Beaver, and Ben and Me. We just bought the individual workbook/guides. They are great for digging deeper. Here's a link if you are interested... http://www.movingbeyondthepage.com/curriculumLiterature.asp HTH:001_smile:
  10. I would do the grade down in SM if you are using it for supplementation. Example, if you were doing 2nd grade math, I would use SM 1. That way you are not finding yourself having to "teach" anything. I would just get the workbooks, and the TM if it makes you feel more comfortable. HTH:001_smile:
  11. Funny you should ask:lol:...did you read the thread from yesterday of all of us that love Saxon for K-3? http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=76406 HTH:001_smile:
  12. BJU Science books are good if you aren't concerned with following WTM suggestions. If you want to go with more of a Charlotte Mason approach, I would suggest looking at www.handbookofnaturestudy.blogspot.com this site will help you understand/establish nature study in your homeschool, and give you specific "challenges" to do each week. HTH:001_smile:
  13. I think it looks good, you have FLL for the grammar, WWE for the writing and you have SWO for spelling. WWE workbook will not cover history or science. It uses exerpts from literature. Although you can pull out passages from your history and science to do so if you wish. You can easily incorporate narration and copywork on your own using SOTW or having you child narrate from your SL books. :001_smile: HTH
  14. My ds was an early reader too. What I did is start in SWO A We orally went over the spelling rules, and did an oral test of the words. As soon as he got to a place where I felt like he fit well. If I can remember I want to say it was about half way thru the book. But just keep in mind that the exercises require writing? Is your dc able to hold the pencil and form the letters correctly? Just a thought... HTH:001_smile:
  15. Although it will be awhile before we get there, I like to research ahead of time and I have been surprised that alot of people on this board and other reviews I've read really like BJU Science. I also like Apologia. So for me, I would look into those two to see if those would be a good fit.:001_smile:
  16. Yeah, I am a die hard Saxon fan myself, we have used Saxon so far, and we ALL have really liked it. I switched to Horizons, but after a couple of weeks we went back to Saxon because with the scripted lessons I was actuallly teaching and using the manipulatives, the amount is just right, and the kiddos really enjoy it. And we too haven't done all the meeting part either. I Love the way they present concepts and how they are tied into new ones as well. It amazes me how they do that!;)
  17. We are planning on going to Classical Writing after we finish WWE as of right now, I've recently discovered Imitations in Writing and I would love to use those as well. I really like JudoMom's plan. I'll have to dig into that and see if that is something we can do. Because my ds is advanced, for some reason, "writing" is the only subject that I am VERY uncertain about.
  18. My dc learned 1-100 very easy with Saxon math. All we did is count on the 100 number chart everyday, then we filled in the number line. It is a line that has blocks for the child to fill in the next number each day. Having the practice the number. You can use flash cards too. Get the child to tell you what the number is, and then lay them down on the table and let them put them in order, use 5-10 cards at a time. And you can get macaroni/toys/candy/etc to put out and count the objects that go with the number so the child understands what the number represents. HTH:001_smile:
  19. I haven't used All About Spelling, but if one of my dc had trouble, this program would be at the top of my list to get for them. I hear alot of good things about this program on this board. It is VERY multi-sensory go here to read about all the components of the program... http://www.all-about-spelling.com/spelling-book-level-1.html HTH:001_smile:
