  1. I think it is hard to eat healthy too. Mainly on the pocketbook. It also seems that there have been a couple of foods that I thought were healthy only to find out they are not. It gets really confusing. This is the guide line that I have adopted. Eat whole grains brown, free range, organic eggs organic dairy fresh veggies and fruit (organic where possible) boneless/skinless chicken, fish and turkey natural, no additives and for my chocolate fix I fix a chocolate protein shake:D
  2. You must be referring to the concern these ladies were talking about in this thread http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=74608&highlight=saxon+math HTH:001_smile:
  3. WWE Writing with Ease, in the text "Strong Fundementals Text" , you will find evaluations on which level to place you child. It was written to go with FLL. If you do the workbook you will forgo the writing in FLL and use the workbook in WWE. IEW is Institute for Excellence in Writing WT Writing Tales CW Classical Writing, it uses the classical writing model of the progymnastamata. WS is Writing Strands, which it sounds like you know about that!;) HTH:001_smile: Im sure I've left out some programs, but that's all my brain is coming up with right now:tongue_smilie:
  4. I started with Saxon, switched to Horizons, and 2 weeks later went back to Saxon because the scripted lessons have me confidence that I was acutally teaching the concepts, it is open and go, and I bought the manipulatives, so that really helped dc understanding. Horizons tells you what the objectives are for each lesson, but they don't tell you how to explain/teach the concepts and they give you ideas for manipulatives, but none are included. I like Saxon because it is open and go, no planning, you are actually "teaching" and the manipulatives are right at your finger tips. We use the program to a tee, except we only do side A of the worksheet, then we do a lesson in Singapore a grade down from Saxon, example, Saxon 1 with earlybird, and Saxon 2 with Singapore 1. That way you don't have to teach anything new with Singapore, it is like a review but from a different "word problem" perspective.
  5. Search "Human Body" at Homeschool Share...they have a couple of neat things! www.homeschoolshare.com HTH:001_smile:
  6. No, they don't match up. Just a way of review from a different mindset! You don't want to have your dc encounter new concepts in SM. You don't want to have to "teach" anything from SM. You do the teaching in Saxon, then use SM for a review, that's why you want to go down a level! HTH:001_smile:
  7. I am supplementing Saxon with Singapore. We are doing the Saxon lessons 100% and then we do side A of the worksheet and then we do 1 lesson a level down in Singapore. Saxon 1 with Singapore Early Bird Saxon 2 with Singapore 1 Saxon 3 wtih Singapore 2 etc. It is definately math from every direction possible!;) We started with Singapore, but I had to have scripted lessons, so that's how we go started with this combo.
  8. Math freaks me out too!:tongue_smilie: That's why I use Saxon, because it's scripted and it gives me confidence that I am actually "teaching" the concept. I have taught Saxon 1, and 2. We do each lesson by the book, but we only do side A of the worksheet, then a lesson in Singapore but we do the grade down. For example, Saxon 1 is done with Singapore Early Bird, Saxon 2 is done with Singapore 1, etc. HTH
  9. Native Charlotte girl, now in Hickory! and LOVE it!;)
  10. I can't answer your LA question, but coming from a MFW lover, I would forgo EFTRU and do Latina Christiana, it's for grades 3-8. Prima Latina is for K-3. Go to this link... http://www.memoriapress.com/descriptions/prima.htm and read "Frequently Asked Questions", that information will help you decide which will be a better fit for your dc. IMO, I would say LC would be best. HTH :001_smile:
  11. Thank you so much for the blog compliment! I have been ashamed that I have neglected it recently, with holidays, and a sudden week long trip. But, I'm glad you liked it! Maybe I can be good and start posting my weekly reports again!:tongue_smilie:
  12. We are doing one a year. We dig deep with it though. We do narration/copywork, memorization. I added lapbooks, library books/DVDs, and we do the experiments. We are doing this along side our MFW Adventures science, and we do nature walks as well.
  13. Maybe you can go back and do some classic Saxon "some, some more stories" and "some, some went away stories" with toys/food, and/or manipulatives and get them to "see" what adding/subtracting is really about thru everyday objects, then they will see drilling is just memorizing the stories in a shorter form. HTH
  14. We are doing MFW Adventures this year, so because it has CM short to the point lessons with Fridays off, it has been easy to implement. The things I have done for my Second grader is that we started Prima Latina in Nov. We will still be able to finish because it is scheduled in LCC for 3 terms, I just counted our first term as us not doing it and then the last 3 terms of the year we will do PL. I also added in the 2nd grade Literature selections. Which he is enjoying ALOT!! For DD(K), we started last week and I am have started implementing all LCC suggestions, the only thing that we will be behind in is the bible and literature, but those will be easy to double up on or enjoy on thru the summer! HTH
  15. We are doing MFW Adventures this year. Next year I am planning on doing MFW 1st with dd and ECC with DS. I have read the MFW forums, WTW forums and Homeschool Reviews, and I honestly haven't come across any negative comments, except a couple of ECC users said that ECC was the "lightest" of the programs, but really didn't have anything negative to say....:001_smile: The bible integration in these programs is worth everything to me!
  16. We just made a big change to do ours separately, because my DS is advanced. I kinda like it because I get more one on one time with them. And doing things individually. It has made them feel more important, and they get more individual attention. I have gotten a lot more smiles and hugs this week already! They are happy now to be "engaged" at their own level. more work for me, but I've just taken turns with them. But it's worth it to see good attitudes! Just be careful and don't advance too quickly, always take into consideration the level of the "whole child". Academically, as well as, physically and emotionally. HTH!
  17. We are using the literature plans for Ben and Me and The Sign of the Beaver, because we are studying American History this year. I use them as a way to dig deeper with some history reading for my advanced ds 7. We like them!:001_smile:
  18. Well, I do know that the deciples drove Honda's because in the book of Act it says they were all in one Accord!
  19. This is a really good one... http://www.coloringcastle.com HTH:001_smile:
  20. I think it looks just about right, and you will be finishing up ETC in a couple of weeks. I think it looks good. Just watch how you schedule it and make it fit for his physical and emotional level. Maybe he could even do the 1/2 hr fun reading at bedtime, if he isn't already:001_smile:
  21. Even though NC doesn't get alot of bad wheather, after Christmas I start longing for the return of the daffodils. When I see them I know spring is right around the corner! Yay!!;)
  22. My son turned 7 in Nov. I am planning for next year, and I want to use CW. In the fall his LA line up will be: R&S Grammar 3, with narration, picture study, poetry via PLL, and SWO D and E, and New American Cursive. For literature we will do the LCC 3rd grade literature suggestions as read alouds. Greek and Norse Myths. He will be a "young" 3rd grader. I have had to put a reign on him because he is advanced academically, but not emotionally or physically. I was wondering since he is so young I should wait until next year (4th grade, 7/8 yrs old) when he is more mature to start CW and when I do, do the scope/sequence for someone who started late. Which is starting with Aesop B with a 4th grader, or should I just start with Aesop A. I want to keep the correct pace. If I waited to use CW for 4th grade, I would use R&S Grammar writing componant, but if I started CW this coming fall, then the grammar would be done orally. This year 2nd grade work is the right fit for him. He is doing R&S Grammar 2 and is doing all the writing. He is doing well! Thanks in advance! Katherine
  23. Before the Code books go over letter sounds. I would start with Explode the Code book 1. The first couple of lessons are review and then it starts with CVC words.
