  1. I'm going to have to get serious this year! I have went for several years and try to be tactful each time. Our library does a $1/bag sale on the second day and it doesn't matter what size of bag you bring. I usually just bring my book bag and I get passed up by people with overflowing rolling carts all the time. So this year I bought a rolling cart and I can't wait to fill it up! lol.:001_smile:
  2. Apparently I was lost too since I thought the same thing you did! Now I am really laughing at myself for thinking that! lol.
  3. CLE has a yahoo group, christian light families, that has numerous samples in their files section. I am unsure if this particular one has a sample file but it might be worth checking into. Also if nobody on this board is able to help you the yahoo group might, as they seem very informative on all things CLE. I hope this helps some.:001_smile:
  4. I don't have any one book that stands out above the rest, they have all been great. My children use SOTW vol.1 and we choose books weekly off their resource list to go a little deeper into things. There is a yahoo group for this book and they have a wealth of information, activities, suggested books, etc. there. HTH!
  5. Thanks Debbie! I wrote down the name of the book and am off to look online at our local library. I really hope they have it. I think I will start with reading the book and then make a decision what we should do. I just thought since my children are younger that a roots-based program would be easier for them to understand and yet would be working towards my goal of Latin. I'll see what I think after reading Climbing Parnassus.
  6. Thanks for the link, I wouldn't have known about this if it weren't for you. I appreciate it!
  7. Whew! So glad it wasn't just me that seemed to be overtaken by them, lol.
  8. I love butterfly bushes (especially the yellow ones), bleeding hearts, gladiolias, morning glory vine, passion flower vine, strawflowers, mums, daisies, daylillies, and ornamental grasses. I planted black-eyed susans a few years back and they have nearly taken over my yard. I pull them up constantly to thin them out and if I close my eyes for a minute they multiply that fast! They even grow in my grass where nothing but grass should grow. Does anyone else have this problem with them?
  9. Debbie, I have a question for you. You said you thought you would do a roots based program first, did you do that or just think it? I was thinking of doing roots based first and then move into Latin. Am I doing this backwards or to no avail? Would doing a roots based first help make Latin easier?
  10. This is me to a "T"! I read the threads and want to post only to find that someone or several someones have already posted exactly what I was thinking. I figure I don't need to double up on the advice so I just lurk instead. And yes, they typically write it better than I could! lol.
  11. :iagree: I think you are both right. There is a story behind it and somebody is going to be mad! You see the funniest things sometimes in ads.
  12. that I need this too. I have used the basic version for three years and have went back on forth on wanting the plus version each year. I didn't know if I could justify it, but with the great reviews on the plus version and the description of the lesson plan options I think I am sold on it. So although I didn't start this thread I greatly benefitted from it. Thanks!
  13. Heather, How long did it take it to arrive? I just ordered and am curious what the turn around time is. I placed one before that only took a couple weeks and then once it took nearly two months! I am like you and get SO excited that patience leave me entirely! I can't wait to hear your review on it all!
  14. I am fairly new to this board and I haven't done a weekly report but I wanted to say that I enjoyed reading everyone's and would love to participate next week. What a great way to see what everyone is doing and to log what we do all week! :001_smile:
  15. I agree with suggesting Christian Light. We have used it for three years and are starting fourth grade with it. It uses spiral learning which is wonderful for my children. I also like that the directions are given in one grade level lower (like third grade instructions are written at second grade levels) so that all levels of readers can read them for themselves. They incorporate daily drill practice, flash cards for elementary level, and various oral skills daily along with the lesson. I also appreciate that it is inexpensive compared to others. So there was my CLE spiel for the day, lol. I was just trying to say it might be worth looking into! ;o)
  16. I didn't know that store's clearance items got sent to Goodwill! That would be a very lucky day for me to find some there, lol. Sounds like more motivation to make it a habit to go!
  17. I agree. My children do soccor and their team doesn't play in the rain due to risk of injury or illness. After all it is just a game so there is no need to take extra risks to ensure that they play each and every game irregardless of weather. Just my opinion and I am thankful it matches their coach's.
  18. We always do a $10 gift card or just $10. My children attend too many b-days for us to spend more than that on each child. My thoughts for an 11yr. old girl would be: gift card or money to spend as she wants dollar store purse filled with nail polish, hair accessories, comb, braceletts etc. stationary pack with pretty paper, envelopes, pencil or pen, and some stickers gift cert. for movie theatre, ice cream shop, or maybe McDonald's money(book of money coupons for there). Scrapbooking kits sold at Walmart, not too expensive but have a lot in them Canvas tote that they decorate with iron ons, kit sold at Walmart for $10 That's all I can come up with, hope some of it helps!
  19. For my dd5 (non-reader) we are doing: CLE Learning to Read, includes handwriting. CLE Math 100, she loves this! I haven't done a language program since she isn't a reader yet and I want to focus on that. She joins her older sibling with SOTW vol. 1 and we do notebooking for science which she loves the idea of having her own binder to fill full of science goodies. I have really enjoyed doing K/1 with both my children. They are so eager and excited to learn at this age!
  20. We have two out of four that like their coffee. Our two year old gets up and let's us know if the coffee pot isn't going, lol. We give them a small amount of coffee in a child size cup then fill the remainder of the cup up with milk and a bit of cocoa. They think it is the coffee and although it isn't the healthiest, they enjoy sitting and enjoying their drink in the morning with us. So your child isn't alone in liking it and you aren't alone in compromising to give it to them, lol.
  21. We are doing spanish with our 3rd grade, K, and pre-K children. They seem to be soaking it up rather impressively, all three of them. So I would say that early is great! We are doing like you said, just going slow and making it fun.
  22. This is basically how we do it too. I have a special cupboard in the school room that is just for my two year old and she can play with the items only during school. There are color books, puzzles, play dough, lace ups, and legos in there. She does good with it. And as for my 2 mo. old, we just work around him. We all take turns holding him (he doesn't like the swing, bouncer, or anything else, lol) and rocking him. It isn't the easiest but it will only get easier. I hope some of this helps you. Hang in there!
  23. That is too funny that you posted this. I went there today for my first time and found a complete set of Audubon nature encyclopedias for $4. I guess Fridays they do something with the color of the price tag and these books had a good color I guess. They had some great clothing as well. I'll be back next week to see what there is. I could join that intervention with you, lol.
  24. Our personal favorite has been Christian Light (CLE). My daughter has liked this the best, but she prefers workbook approach. It is a no frills program that incorporates everything in a spiral manner. We are sold on it after three years! My second choice (if I get one, lol) would be Math U See. I think the manipulatives make this very easy for children to understand.
  25. I completely agree with CLE. It is very well organized, covers everything, and is easy to teach. I would highly recommend atleast looking at it!
