  1. First just try adding some more protein to each meal, and at regular intervals, to see if that stabilizes it more. A cheese stick,or a handful of nuts -- something a bit more than that strip of bacon. ** I am not a doctor, nor do I play one on television, nor do I have any specialized knowledge of pregnancy post-bariatric surgery. But I'm darned proficient at all things blood sugar-ish :-) **
  2. Check his bg asap, please! While all of those symptoms *could* be other things, together they are strongly suggestive of diabetes.
  3. I would, and will. My DS took a one semester study skills class from Landry, and we considered it an elective for credit. I had typing on my transcript back in the day, for goodness sake, and got accepted at an Ivy....
  4. We've used and like Positive Action also. Even though our theology is quite different than theirs according to their statement of faith, we've found their curricula to be nicely *straight* Bible without too much denominational interpretation. (Although I think the 6th grade deals with Revelation and might be more problematic...) There's nothing really strict about the grade levels; you could definitely combine ages within a few years of each other in the same course. Or you can pretty much have students do it independently too. It's not how they recommend, but it works.
  5. I FOUND IT! Ecobeauty Referenced in: What are you getting for your 12-15 year old girl for Christmas? 12 Year Old Girl Gift Ideas Please While we're talking of books - what books are you buying as gifts this year? Birthday present for a 12 year old girl People with sensitive eyes and eye areas, I need recs Re-bookmarking --- and just buying the book before I forget it again!
  6. I think one of the best baby gifts, and one not often thought of, is books. Use up the rest off your money putting together a nice selection of board books from Amazon!
  7. I found and bought this one: The Body Book: Recipes for Natural Body Care. It's a Klutz book. I still don't think it's the one I saw mentioned here, but I think the recipient will like it. I would still love it if anyone knew the book I was thinking of! :-) I remember it had recipes for clothes/linen sachets, lotions, things like that...
  8. It's not the one I'm looking for (I need a physical book for a gift) but it looks fun -- I think the young lady in question would enjoy the playing with food aspect. Thanks!
  9. I keep looking at this one: Natural Beauty Recipe Book but I don't think it's right...
  10. I can't find the bookmark for a recommended book here on various natural beauty/spa/skin care recipe, especially suitable for tween/teens IIRC. I think it was on a birthday or gift-giving ideas thread? Can anyone help me? :-)
  11. Yes, the generic works great. I just went through my Amazon history -- I basically buy one generic cartridge toner a year for my Brother, and having been doing so for the last five years. :-) Total investment: $100 for the printer, about $50 in toner!
  12. I've been looking for an astronomy course for my ds. I followed up on the Castalia House link upthread and just wanted to come back and add some additional info. I followed the links to the textbook used and found this: Q. Are you creationists? A. This is really a two-part question. Q. Are you Young-Earth Creationists? A. No. Q. Do you believe our universe was created? A. Yes. One of the beliefs that forms the foundation of the big bang theory is that our universe suddenly appeared out of ‘nothing.’ Something from nothing means creation, and, as scientists, we have to go where the evidence takes us. Right now science says our universe came about as an instance of creation. Q. Are you proponents of intelligent design? A. As a scientific theory, no. However, as Christians we obviously believe in some form of intelligence that created the universe. Since the dominant theory of cosmology maintains that our universe originated in an instance of creation, the next question that demands our attention is whether the cause of creation was conscious (God) or unconscious (super-nature). Modern physics and biology offer an abundance of evidence (but no proof) in favor of a purposeful intelligence and little or none against. Again, as scientists, we have to go where the evidence takes us. https://sixdayscience.com/about-us/faqs/ And, from the course IG: 1.3 Note on Biblical Perspective This course is presented from an agnostic perspective, without overt regard to any particular religious or philosophical tradition. However, it must be emphasized that nothing in this course contradicts the Bible. In fact, this material is highly supportive of biblical belief. This course includes an optional Biblical Supplement and corresponding lessons at the end of some of the chapters for those parents interested in incorporating a scriptural perspective into the course. It seems to be very well organized and lab intensive, and I like the idea of having labs and exams already prepared. I think it might be worth a closer look for people looking for a high school astronomy course.
  13. I did. It was my first Instant Pot usage (of any sort) and my first yogurt-making attempt. :-) I was very pleased with my results. Now, granted, I determined the whole "boil the milk" thing first was unnecessary, and I'm more of a "scoop of this" kind of gal, so... it didn't thicken as much as it should have. (Afterward I read that that's why you boil the milk, LOL!) I just filled glass jars with milk, stirred in a spoonful of yogurt and hit yogurt setting on the Instant Pot. Eight hours later, the yogurt (albeit thin) was delicious. No muss, no fuss, I put lids on the jars and put them in the fridge. When I do it again, I think I'll boil in the glass jars also so as not to dirty a pan, and use my jar tongs from canning to move the jars in and out.
  14. Lots of people go into fields they've chosen way, WAY after their junior year of high school! With the TBI, I definitely think slow and steady is better than a push to "catch up" with some idealized plan. I think colleges and college departments will be impressed by his dedication and interested in him because of his story, and that taking his time and developing a solid base is the most important. That, and developing/keeping mentors/connections in the field -- his doctor, maybe a professor locally -- who can point him in the right direction at the right time, vouch for him, etc.
  15. I liked NewsAcademic this last year. We didn't use it very effectively but I liked it.
  16. This is what I do as well. A squirt bottle, some Dr. Bronners, some rubbing alcohol and maybe some drops of essential oils (I usually use lavender soap and lavender oil or tea tree of both). The soap, of course, kills germs, but the rubbing alcohol just makes me feel better about it all -- and helps speed up drying.
  17. I do. I have a few generics good for summer 2016 and beyond that we won't use this coming academic year. Please feel free to PM me if you're interested.
  18. The Carlsbad KOA has cabins, if that's something you might be interested in. My family really enjoyed staying there a few years ago!
  19. I don't know but I need a great math tutor! Message me your (general) location. :-)
  20. I didn't read all the replies, so this has probably already been said. But when these threads (or conversations) come up, the thing I notice is that in addition to people usually not *really* knowing how much they spend on food, it really, REALLY matters where you live. I say this as someone who has lived in the PNW, Texas, the Midwest, the South and the Washington DC area in the last 10 years. Geographic location has been *the* biggest variable in my grocery bills. For instance, in the DC area, we ate out far less than other places we've lived, and still spent substantially more in total on food.
  21. My son used the Dallas Public Schools OT Survey. (Reprint of the book used in the 50s, maybe, or earlier? I don't remember.)
  22. I don't get Prime Climb. It was so expensive and it seems so... I don't know. I feel like we're missing something huge. Any tips?
  23. Gazpacho? Salad w/ red wine or lemon vinegarette? Caprese?
  24. Is it so remote that you couldn't hire a decorator? Because with what you've laid out, that's what I'd do. Hire a decorator to buy and place the agreed upon furniture, art, etc. for you. A decorator will be able to get trade pricing on stuff, may have stuff already in storage she'd sell, etc. You've got a substantial budget listed there with the furniture you're buying -- hand it over to her and tell her to make a, b, c, and d fit into it, and e and f if she can manage it. If you really want to do the art piece yourself (do it LARGER than you think you need), do it NOW, send it to the decorator and have her use it as the inspiration piece. But (opposite approach) it would actually be okay to entertain without all the furniture purchased and the decorating done. Especially if he's still in a military-oriented field -- everyone gets the moving thing. But what I'd do then is just hire/rent a caterer/party supply to fill your house with standing cocktail tables, small rounds, chairs, linens...
