  1. I'm in the same situation. I have a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering, but to work in that field I would need to travel or be away from home for extended periods of time and I don't want to do that. I could look for related environmental type work, but at less pay. I could teach at a nearby community college or college. Many only want part-time people though. I currently tutor very part-time. I like working with kids and would love to be able to tutor full time, but that isn't very realistic. Could also look for a nanny/tutor type position. I've looked at being a pharmacy tech. I would only have to pass a certification test. I have about 3 years left of homeschooling. Then what?
  2. It doesn't help our dog. The only place he will stay is right on top of my feet. This time of year always involves a few long nights.
  3. It sounds like a cemetery tour is a must. We planned to go to the park and dd says there are plenty of things to see along the trolley route. I'm sure we will find enough to eat. No worries there!
  4. No, we will be there later this month. My oldest has an internship this summer at Tulane University.
  5. Any suggestions for what to see with teens in New Orleans that's not too expensive?
  6. Not nearly as bad as when they were younger. In a few weeks, we will be down to one dc and I expect the car to be even cleaner.
  7. Very interesting. My oldest dd is majoring in Chemical Engineering and decided to minor in Women and Gender Studies. She likes the contrast and feels like the two totally different subjects are a good blend.
  8. No. I live 2.5 hours away and I'm not going. Watch it online.
  9. We have a lot of horses and cattle nearby. Apple cores go out the window.
  10. I think this is what we are doing. English - Elements of Literature, assigned reading, grammar, various essays - I make it up as we go based mainly on what she's reading Precalculus with Trig - Foerster Spanish - Practice Makes Perfect and Paso A Paso Chemistry with lab - local LAC AP Environmental Science - Living in the Environment by Tyler Miller Logic -The Power of Critical Thinking by Lewis Vaughn or A Workbook for Arguments by David R. Morrow and logic puzzles - fall semester Spring semester P.E. - she plays competitive soccer so I will only have to keep track of the hours. Something at the LAC - maybe Culinary Chemistry or Intro to Computer Science Maybe another elective if she wants it.
  11. I love this! Can you imagine how many memories she made in that dress?!?
  12. Who's going to care if the bride's grandmother is wearing a new dress or not? Certainly not the bride.
  13. Horseback riding, fishing, canoeing, walking/biking trail, playground, camping
  14. I had braced myself for lots of questions and explanations. When I saw that, I couldn't believe that's all I had to do. :001_smile:
  15. That's a big sigh of relief! Thanks!
  16. If dd's eligibility status is Final:certified that is all she needs, right?
  17. We asked, but they said the IV has to be in first, then they are doing a block on her arm.
  18. She is 18. The diazepam was supposed to relax her, but it didn't work at all.
  19. I thought the same thing. Why are they all women?
  20. Dd is having surgery next week and has a major needle phobia. Inserting the IV will be the worst part of the whole thing by far. Our family doctor gave her diazepam when she had a whole body scan, but it had no effect on her at all. Any advice to make this easier for her?
  21. In our state we have no access to public school classes. We do have a small liberal arts college 15 minutes from our house. Dual enrollment has worked out great for us. The girls have access to a full lab for science classes, qualified professors for any class they are interested in, and the chance to participate in class discussions, presentations, and projects. For us, I couldn't have asked for a better deal. However, they were able to handle the workload. If they weren't, we would have looked into other options. As far as AP classes, they are a great way to show that your homeschool student is well prepared for college level work. If your child is able, why not take AP classes and dual enrollment?
  22. This happened to my daughter when she was a young teen. She's always had a hard time making friends and was thrilled when this girl started hanging out with her and inviting her places. Later, she found out she was being recruited for the girl's church. Whoever brought in the most new members got a prize. My dd was devastated. It was a very bad experience.
  23. Totally OT, but that sounds like a really cool house!
