  1. Dd plays soccer and injured her back through overuse. Her hips were very tight and weak causing other muscles to work too hard. We went to a chiropractor and he said her muscles were completely locked up, beyond the point of stretching or physical therapy. She did dry needling weekly for several months. The chiropractor gave her stretches and hip and core exercises to do on her own. She gradually reduced the frequency of needling, and is now going once a month. She still does the stretching and exercises almost every day. When she started needling she couldn't walk or sleep without pain. She's been pain free for a couple of weeks now, but the chiropractor warned her to keep up with the stretching and exercises or it could return. I was skeptical at first, but it has made a huge difference.
  2. Every program is different. At my daughter's college, there are smaller class sizes and the students usually really want to be there and are more involved in the class. Honor students get to register first. They live in the same dorm, which cuts down a little on the parties/noise. The students are more serious overall. Some programs cover the cost of books.
  3. We've actually used this before and I'd forgotten about it. Thanks!
  4. I have plenty of speeches. http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/lesson-docs/SpeechSignOut.pdf http://www.americanrhetoric.com/top100speechesall.html http://www.famous-speeches-and-speech-topics.info/famous-speeches-by-women/ Speeches are the easiest to find. I was planning to use excepts from Silent Spring by Rachel Carson, Cosmos from Carl Sagan, and Death By Black Hole by Neil Tyson deGrasse. I found a couple of sources for science articles. https://www.the-scientist.com/?home.home http://www.sciencemag.org/news I thought I could add in editorials from the Wall Street Journal or other major newspapers to include in some economic, social, or political topics. I'm still thinking about how to organize and approach the whole thing.
  5. I thought it could be something like AP Language and Composition with little writing. More discussion based and recognizing the rhetorical devices used and evaluating effectiveness. She likes science more than history and literature though so I thought we could do something similar with scientific journal articles, science based essays, and related charts, graphs, and data.
  6. I'm thinking about this for my junior next year. I thought we could read and analyze famous speeches, essays, and scientific papers. She reads plenty of fiction. I thought this might be a good way to add in more nonfiction. Is there anything like this already? Has anyone tried something similar?
  7. LOL, I never bought a box of Kleenex until we got married. Never even occurred to me.
  8. What about asking another elderly lady to rent a room in the adapted house? Would she enjoy the company or does she like her privacy? It would help cover expenses.
  9. I would like a very small ceremony with only close family and for my ashes to be poured into the ocean on a beautiful beach. I absolutely do not want a viewing. They can put up pictures if they want.
  10. Do books count? I have a lot of those.
  11. Luggage, blender, coffee maker, and rice cooker have been recent gifts.
  12. I got the flu shot a week ago. This is the first time in years that I have gotten one. I haven't had any reaction at all to it and I don't remember any reaction in the past, although it has been awhile.
  13. Yes. This "defense" nauseates me.
  14. I am saddened, but not surprised at how much support Roy Moore has gotten. I don't view this as a homeschool issue, but it does seem to be accepted within certain evangelical groups.
  15. If she has any interest in intelligence, defense, or politics I would keep the history major and encourage double majoring in a foreign language, especially Chinese, Arabic, or Russian.
  16. We give a calendar with pictures of the kids each month and a monthly delivery of citrus fruit.
  17. Really? Two homeschoolers on this board have NEVER met an evangelical homeschooler? You obviously don't live in the south. I can't even imagine being in an area with a group of homeschoolers that I might be able to talk openly with.
  18. We are the only secular homeschoolers in our area that I know of. I wish we had more diversity.
  19. Good question. My grandmother has a home health aid stay with her 24 hours a day so she can live at home. She pays for it partly with Medicare and partly her own savings. She lives about 15 minutes from me and I can be there quickly if she needs me. My mom moved to Florida which is about 12 hours away. So far, she is able to live on her own, but she doesn't want to move back here and I sure don't want to move there. I'm her only close living relative and I have no idea what to do when she is no longer able to live on her own. She has nowhere near the savings my grandmother does. My FIL and MIL live about 30 minutes away and are in the best health of all of our elderly relatives. So far, MIL still drives but dh or I could be there pretty quickly if they needed us.
  20. I have 3 dds and this would make me ill. We would try to avoid him totally. If this wasn't possible, he would never be near her without me or dh present. If he tried or said anything remotely inappropriate, there would be hell to pay. He has NO business becoming involved with a 15 year old.
  21. That really would have annoyed me. I would have visited MIL on mother's day and kept my birthday plans separate. I would have said, "Sorry, that doesn't work for me, but you guys have fun."
