  1. This is my 3rd and final 9th grader. So far, this is what I am planning. English - WWS 3, Elements of Literature, Warriner's Grammar and Composition, I'm not sure yet what books she'll read Algebra II - Maybe Blitzer's College Algebra, maybe Forrester's Spanish -Paso A Paso, Practice Makes Perfect Series, and something for listening Biology - DE at LAC American Government Health
  2. Are there cds available for listening to and answering questions in Spanish? Or listening exercises online? I'm thinking of something like the AP listening questions.
  3. Another vote for Junie B. Jones and the Twilight series. Both are unbelievably horrible.
  4. I let my oldest dd read a Junie B. Jones on the condition that she edit the book for grammar. She thought it was fun once, but had no desire to read anymore.
  5. The College Board was supposed to issue a conversion chart to the new scores could be compared to old ones. Does anyone know about this?
  6. But maybe that's because the scale has changed?
  7. We were able to see our scores at 9:30. The commended scores in the past have been around 201-202. It looks like they may be a little lower this year.
  8. This has been such as interesting thread to read. I grew up in a blue-collar, working poor family. I think it's fascinating how one's childhood influences his adult life and how he raises his children. I'm not homeschooling as a blue-collar worker, but my upbringing has definitely affected how I home school and raise my kids.
  9. Thanks for posting. I'm glad it worked out for her and her grandparents are supportive.
  10. Dd is a freshman in chemical engineering with a math minor. She took Calculus at our local LAC and she took 1 semester of biology, 3 of chemistry, and 1 of physics all with labs. I think math would be the hold up for most kids. Have him take as much math as possible.
  11. A local church here gives out prizes to kids who bring the most new visitors to their youth group.
  12. Joining an evangelical youth group of a religion that she does not belong to is a pretty big decision that her parents should be involved in making.
  13. a 14yo is most definitely NOT almost an adult. I think a 14 yo's wishes should certainly be taken into consideration, but very few are ready to make adult decisions.
  14. What a sad situation. I hope it works out well for each of you. Maybe Christmas will bring a reconciliation.
  15. I agree that funerals and memorial services are for the living. But, just like I wouldn't want people I didn't know well in my hospital room, I also wouldn't want to deal with strangers (anyone I see 6 hours a year or less I would consider a "stranger") at a funeral. I know everyone is different and I know some people would want great crowds at their loved ones funeral. But not me. I would very much prefer a small, intimate gathering of the people that I am closest to. I don't think the OP knows her SIL well enough to know how to best respond to her grief. However, SIL did lose her child and I can't even imagine her pain. In the future, I would have the OP's dh talk directly to his brother and go from there.
  16. I would not have wanted a hospital visit from some one I only see a few hours a year at a time like that. I would much rather someone I don't know well text or call.
  17. Wow, I haven't heard that term in years. It does bring back memories.
  18. Are you saying that because I am white, I have the social power? Because I am not feeling the power. Usually I am just trying to think of something to say or standing awkwardly watching other people.
  19. Wait. Is this a microaggression? I am a white woman and I rarely lead a conversation with anyone that I don't know well. Mostly I ask questions and listen to the other person. Most people are happy to talk if you ask questions and seem interested in their answers. I think who leads the conservation has more to do with whether they are an introvert or extrovert.
  20. Yes. Small talk is awkward for me. I would and have asked people where they are from. Then I happily talk about their background and what they like/don't like/find most interesting about where they are.
