  1. yes, my daughter will be getting special services (longer test time, quiet room - things like that ) when the paper work is completely reviewed. She does take advantage of student services and other helps. She has had no luck with tutors... none of them returned her email and now the semester is nearly over. She's been using YouTube to help her figure stuff out. My issue is the professors' lack of care for their craft - not the lack of services available from the school itself. Your comment about them being there solely for research helps put it into perspective. However, I would hope that the school, as a whole, would care about this. Wouldn't they be concerned if their drop-out rate was high because the teachers aren't really doing their jobs?
  2. This post is part vent and part asking for advice. But, please don't beat me up - even after 4 college kids I still find I'm walking in the dark sometimes..... My daughter transferred to a large Out-of-state college this past fall. This is her first experience with classes of 300 or more and she's pretty discouraged. The biggest issue is that the professors are very unwilling to offer any guidance or help. She has gone to at least two of her professors to ask for help or ideas because she's studying hard but not doing well. Both prof. said "That's your problem, not mine." Seriously, they couldn't even take a moment to direct her to a good tutor or services? I understand that with 300 students per class she's not going to get one-on-one attention, but their lack of concern is disappointing. She says that all her tenured professors have this attitude. They really don't care if there are problems. The latest problem is a professor who gives them 10 min. to take a test. Now my dd needs to have more time for tests- we're working on that issue - but she says that when the prof. says "You have 2 more mins left" just about everyone in the room complains. This has got to be more than just my daughter's learning problems. I encouraged her to get a group together to go talk with the professor. I don't know that it will do much good, but at least she will be proactive about her education. So, should I just continue to offer ideas and support from afar when dd calls me? Or, should I step in and call the college? I am paying the bills after all.
  3. our current flat screen was ordered from Amazon last year. We didn't have a problem. Good luck.
  4. That... can't say it any better. Not everyone will try to be kind and not hurt her feelings.... KWIM? You did the right thing.
  5. I agree with the OP. My daughter's godmother is an interpreter and my daughter has seriously considered a career in that field. I've seen Godmother in action and she is very much like Lydia Callis. I thought the media slathering on about her was rather condescending to the deaf community. Agreeing with others that Tamara should send her post into the NYTimes.
  6. too many choices! In America: PNW Mountains of TN, VA, or NC Canaan Valley area of PA (there's a great monastery I'd love to live near). Outside of America British Columbia or PEI UK - I'm thinking the Wye River Valley area or down Cornwall way or the Cotswolds or up near the Isle of Skye NZ - I have a friend on the North Island - I'd like to live near her.
  7. In the two small churches we attended in the past we had a children's Christmas play. It was a simple affair. In the 2nd church (which was liturgical) they also had a Children's service on Christmas eve. That always seemed like a bit of overkill - especially considering the size of the church, but that is what they did. The other small church wasn't liturgical and didn't have anything special for the kids on Christmas eve - but it was a "Family" Christmas Eve service.
  8. That has not been the case with the younger people I've known who had shingles. None of them were vax.
  9. okay, I'm confused. I thought GMO was Genetically Modified Foods? If so, why are we including wheat? All wheat was modified in the 70's. I think the guy that did it got a Nobel Prize for it too. Perhaps it wasn't technically "modified" but it was "hybridized" and "manipulated" on a genetic level. I don't think its possible to buy any wheat that isn't this way. I'm also a bit confused about meat being a GMO. I understand that non-organic meat is filled with other not-pleasant things. I buy my meat from a friend who has a small farm and raises her own humanely. but, have non-Organic cows been genetically modified too? Perhaps I'm completely confused about what GMO is or isn't.
  10. wow - how did I miss this? How did you watch it? Netlflix doesn't seem to have it yet.
  11. A friend of mine joined many years ago...she said the same thing.
  12. They also have live results on the net: http://election2012.npr.org/
  13. I found this on a friends blog: "What would you attempt to do if you knew you could not fail?" my answers: 1. write a book (fiction) 2. become a nurse for "Internat'l Red Cross" or "Doctors Without Borders"
  14. I've bookmarked your blog too. I love blogs. They're a great way to have some civil and thoughtful conversations. I've taken a blogging break too. Don't know if I'll be back, but I did enjoy it tremendously when I did it.
  15. surely there is some kind of support group. Did you do a google search for your area? I'm so sorry :grouphug: :grouphug:
  16. very cool. That has inspired me to look for a weaving pattern for those.
  17. I made some pretty soap. I'll post a picture of it soon.
  18. Sometimes I do protein shakes for breakfast. I use either cream or a combo of Almond/coconut milk. I just discovered this from someone here: http://www.lowcarbfriends.com/bbs/lowcarb-recipe-help-suggestions/580923-pumpkin-shake-recipe-inside.html#post10989710 others in the thread have omitted the egg and just added Whey protein.
  19. Dottieanna - I'm glad you're okay and you have a place to go. In my area the first neighborhoods/houses to get electricity back are the ones with well water since they are doubly stuck. Perhaps you'll be on the shorter end of that estimate since you've got well too.
  20. I feel for all of you without power. :grouphug: I wish there was more we could do.
  21. if there are it isn't much. Here's the local electric co map of outages: http://www.pepco.com/home/emergency/maps/stormcenter/
  22. Thanks We made do. peanut butter sandwich (he doesn't like jelly) and a pineapple cup, and I did find some ham - he likes to eat that without bread. He can't do hot lunches at his school.
