  1. Okay, thank you. That makes sense. I bought Cheryl Lowe's study guide years ago but just couldn't click with Henle. Sigh. We still aren't clicking very well. Maybe we'll just go with Wheelocks for grammar and sell our Henle. Barb
  2. Please remind me...units 1 and 2 are to be used with Latin I and Units 3-5 are Latin II? After that, the rest is Latin III and IV? My daughter has completed Latin I and II with Oxford and translates beautifully but is rusty on her grammar. How far should she go in Henle to catch up? Barb
  3. Aubrey, I PM'med you the name of a midwife to the north of you. I used her when my 5th was born and we were living in SE OK by Lake Texoma. She is less expensive and makes housecalls. I say find a midwife (yours or another) who is willing to charge you on a sliding scale. If you explain the situation, many midwives will work with you. For so many, they regard it as a personal calling and would be appalled at your being forced to choose between their services and appropriate transportation. Barb
  4. I'm pretty sure it was Kay in CA. About 2 years ago? Barb
  5. Sophia said exactly what I was going to say. A Speedo one piece works great for girls of this description. They're very sporty and attractive. Barb
  6. Clearing up the nasal congestion should help. It doesn't matter how slight it is, the trickle in the back of the throat will cause and/or exacerbate a cough. It doesn't even have to seem like the sinus drainage is causing it. A squirt of decongestant nose spray always does the trick for me. Barb
  7. :p I was thinking the same thing! At 9am, I am very lucky if my teeth and hair are brushed. Barb
  8. No, the current Dolciani texts aren't dumbed down in the least. The older texts were clearer, but contained less material. In the newer texts I sense an overlay of later editing adding to and in some cases obfuscating her very elegant explanations. I used the newer texts because they contained more terminology and separated out the concepts into more sections. The older texts moved more quickly and in many were easier to understand, but I had trouble finding teacher support for them. I think the difficulty level of the problems topped out at mid-B on the older texts (say, pre 1980's or so). In the newer texts, there are more problems included to choose from in each section and they top out at a higher difficulty level. I own a 1969 version of Stucture and Method I as well as the current (2000?) version with the solutions manual. The older editions were easy to find on the used market pretty cheaply (try ABEbooks...I think I picked mine up for 5-6 bucks shipped). I liked having the old one to refer to in the newer one got too bogged down. Barb
  9. In my experience, high energy wanes with age but ADHD they don't grow out of. I have one of each. The older one still has tons of mental energy and can do the work of 3 adults when motivated, but is no longer the unfocused whirlwind she was when she was little. The younger one is almost 9 and still cannot complete a train of thought without bouncing up and down and running into things. The others are gifted, but normally active. I'll be interested to hear if others have had the same experience. Barb
  10. Hmm, not really a clone of her mother because every X-chromosome carries a different set of traits. Otherwise all girl children in the family would be clones of mom. But yeah, that's pretty much it. The article also mentions that the boy child could simply be XY and the extra Y-chromosome somehow vanishes. Since I'm not clear on how that would happen, I conveniently left it out  Barb
  11. Personally, I like plain Cheerios with skim milk. Filling, low in sugar, no fat and easy. Shrug. Barb
  12. THANK YOU for asking this question! I've always wondered the same, but never got around to thinking deeply enough to solve the problem. I've long since adjusted to simply accepting mystery stains around here. Barb
  13. Thank you everyone! Now to save all the responses and play around with the ingredients :) Barb
  14. Okay, the way I understand it from the article is this: When an egg (X) is fertilized by a Y-chromosome sperm, you get a boy (XY). Likewise, an egg (X) fertilized by an X-chromosome sperm gives you a girl (XX). An XY zygote that splits would ordinarily give you male identical twins, but if by chance the split is confused, you can wind up with one child who is XYY (a boy with an extra Y-chromosome in his genetic makeup) and a girl who only has one X chromosome, inheriting only her mother's genetic material and not her father's (X0). So they are identical in the sense that they started out monozygotic, rather than from two eggs and two sperms, but they only inherited the identical genetic material from the mother...not the father. In fact, genetically she doesn't even have a father. Weird, huh? Barb
  15. Do you have worchestshire? Here's a recipe for homemade steak sauce: http://www.cooks.com/rec/view/0,191,133190-240192,00.html Edited to say: Actually, I didn't mean to use the recipe exactly, but as a jumping off point to get close to what you're looking for :) Barb
  16. Actually, I think this is a really good point. I remember the early board. I was also on the WTMHS Yahoo board back then. I think the earliest adopters were starving for something like TWTM for High School and they drank from it like water in the desert. Now many if not most of us see TWTM as one option from a smorgasboard of opportunities currently available for this age group. I think it's just a byproduct of the inevitable maturing of the community. Barb
  17. Know what I do in those sorts of situations? I tell my darling husband how I would have preferred he'd answered. I would say something like, "that's really sweet of you to take over for me, but your saying "do what you need to do" makes me feel guilty for having asked. I know you and I know that's not how you meant it, but it's hard for me to ask in the first place and now I'm second guessing myself and feeling like crap. Next time I go out on the limb and ask for something would you say something like, Sure, Honey...anything to make your life easier or Absolutely, get lost, have fun, we'll be fine!" You aren't just looking for time off, but also absolution. Your husband doesn't know this, but I bet he'd be willing to offer it if you'd let him know. Barb
  18. If it's your grandma's or your husband's grandma's, that's even better. I have a wonderful recipe for quick sauce using canned, peeled, organic tomatoes, but I want the type of recipe that simmers all day and makes the house smell yummy. Read? Set! go! Barb
  19. I think it's very important to slowly turn over the reins during the high school years. Students who have created their own work habits are more likely to succeed in post secondary education for many reasons, not the least of which is they feel as if they own their own learning. This is a perfect opportunity to step back and allow some leeway. I tend to allow anything as long as the work is getting done. One of my middle schoolers starts her schoolwork at 9pm and works until midnight. She sleeps in the next day and has the whole afternoon free to spend outdoors, doing chores, etc. I instinctively recoiled at her schedule, but it's working for her right now. She's happy and productive, which means I'm happy. Barb
  20. I like Warriner's and would highly recommend it. It's very easy to pick up on half.com or amazon used. The series is also known as "Elements of Language". Barb
  21. to see whether anyone is still here. Really, I'm just trying to make it to level 2 of beedom before bed and can't think of anything clever or worth posting in any other thread. Barb
  22. Actually, that does surprise me. You are a never ending source of surprise, Toni :D Barb
  23. I think this would be cool. My 6yo has an old one on her foot that is driving us crazy. Does it have to be raw and unfiltered or is plain apple cider vinegar good? I'm guessing to have a good trial, we should all use the same vinegar. What brand did you buy and where did you get it? Barb
  24. There is no point in keeping old scores on record. The general feeling is to take the SAT twice, but no more than three times. That allows for bad days, a sick day or a fire drill bell or something else unforeseen. Why use up one of those takes for a score you won't be using for anything anyway, right? Other than a specific program like JHU, SAT scores aren't really helpful for gaining entrance to programs unless they are *really* high. For example, my daughter wants to do a summer program at ASU, but they only take scores in the top 1%. So my 13yo would have to score over 1450 in CR and Math. Not likely. Besides, as long as you keep the actual, official score report on file that you can share, that is generally enough for anyone other than colleges. Barb
