  1. Memoria Press offers the Novare standard track classes, but if there were demand they would offer the accelerated track as well. I was planning to use WHA for science, but I can’t get past that fee - makes it $970 for one class. MP science costs $600.
  2. Standards Edition does review topics, but it goes deeper and the problems are more complex. It does, however, introduce new topics. I used 6A/B Standards with my oldest. She did well with 5A/B, but I was in no hurry to start algebra before 8th, and felt she could benefit from the extra reinforcement. I really liked 6A/B and plan to use it with my younger two, both of whom do well with math.
  3. Memoria Press Online Academy uses the standard track Novare texts Introductory Physics and General Chemistry. They also use the middle school texts Earth Science & Physical Science. They do not and likely will not offer courses for the accelerated track texts. If enough people ask, he might be persuaded, but currently there is not enough demand.
  4. If you email Novare, you can request full chapter samples to compare the texts. I requested the chapters on circuits from each text to compare the difficulty. I was planning to enroll my oldest in Honors Physics, but I am not paying nearly $1000 for one class on top of full-time MPOA tuition. Based on the samples, I think we can handle ASPC at home.
  5. I think if you post on the MP forum you will get recommendations on both sides. If it were me, I would start with LC. FFL moves much more quickly. The only downside is that there is only a $25 difference between the classes, and a lot more ground is covered in FFL. LC would be a much gentler introduction to Latin and to online classes. Dr. Dray is my daughter's favorite teacher and he is teaching both. I've heard wonderful things about Meredith Cutrer, but do not have much personal experience as my daughter has only had her as a sub.
  6. Sorry - I missed the last part. My oldest daughter has been taking classes at MPOA for 4 years, and we are very happy with the courses & teachers. Her first class was Narrative. She's in HS Comp II this year. She takes composition, Latin, literature and Classical Studies. My youngest plans to start Narrative next fall. I know Dr. Dray's class time doesn't work for you, but he is my oldest daughter's favorite teacher.
  7. The course listings are not complete. That second section listed as TBA will likely be added. The director is adding classes as his teachers provide their schedules. I’m pretty sure he had two full sections this year.
  8. It was written to be completed in a year. A few years ago MP revamped their 3rd grade package to create a more gentle ramp-up from 2nd grade. In their standard 3rd grade package it is scheduled over two years. In the accelerated 3rd grade plans (the original 3rd grade package now sold as accelerated), it is completed in 1 year.
  9. I love MP. I use complete cores minus math, spelling and grammar. I also make some changes to science using only the MP written books plus the Novare books they use. I find it very easy to customize my packages. None of my kids fit perfectly into their packages as listed. I use their plans as a guide. I find most of their materials are very easy to schedule without plans. We are in our 5th year using MP - our 4th year using mostly complete cores.
  10. Most of the skaters who ‘homeschool’ at my daughter’s rink use online public school. There are a few who actually homeschool. Many say its temporary, but the only ones who go back to school are those who quit the sport. You say she will have supervision. Will she be staying at the rink or will she be home? If she will be at the rink all day you may want to consider some sort of online instruction, unless she is very self-motivated. The girls who stay at my rink during the day do online public school.
  11. I have a degree in Bio and l was able to avoid dissection. I studied micro and molecular and wanted nothing to do with Animal Bio or A&P for that reason.I recall there being dissections in HS and college general Bio, but I observed from a distance. So, I don’t think it’s necessary unless you want to do it.
  12. There’s a group here that charges $20 to book a free field trip. If you show up you get your $20 back.
  13. The fact that you are asking suggests you think you may have too many. Regular swim lessons and instruments wouldn’t bother me. The one thing that stands out to me is that your 9 YO has 7 different activities. If it works for you, it’s not a problem. My kids each have a primary activitly that practices multiple times per week plus piano so we have something nearly every day, but I personally cannot imagine keeping up with all those different activities.

  15. My daughter had Mr. King last year for 3FL. She wasn't crazy about him for the same reasons, but I loved his structure and organization and thought she needed it. Looks like Ms. Cutrer and Ms. Jacobson both have openings if they work for you. My daughter loves both of them. Mine has started 3 oh her 4 classes this year at MP and so far loves them. I'm certain she will love the 4th as well as it's her favorite teacher, Dr. Dray. He's very engaging and entertaining as well.
  16. Take a look at this article. This one spoke to me more than the other article. How Latin Develops the Mind
  17. Why Latin is Not Optional Rest in peace, Mrs. Lowe
  18. It's too bad that Dr. Dray's class is full, but I wouldn't hesitate to take Ms. Cutrer's class. Her sections tend to fill quickly. Have you watched the preview of Ms. Cutrer's class? https://www.memoriapressacademy.com/catalog?pagename=previews
  19. The online forms do move quickly. The online school year is only 34 weeks, and they have to finish the book, which means pretty much a lesson a week. My daughter is very Latin natural but highly unmotivated, so she does struggle to keep up sometimes which is why she needs those deadlines. They did add 15 minutes to all Latin classes last year to incorporate extra time for drill. It had previously been a separate class and only an option for First Form. Efficient use of class time has been the one area where I have had an issue.Once a week classes cannot be taught the same way a daily class can. If you decide to enroll, you might like Cody King. I thought he did a great job of teaching the material, and he kept a close watch on the chat box. I was always impressed with how efficiently he used class time. My daughter thought he was a little strict, but she ended up really liking him. She said he even kicked kids out of class who weren't participating in the polls - after being warned of course.
  20. Anne Parry, Cody King, Julia Jacobson and Laura Bateman either were or are currently teachers at MP's brick and mortar school, The Highlands Latin School. My daughter had Mrs Jacobson but not for Latin. She's a lovely teacher, but my one issue was the amount of time they spent reading aloud in a class which only met once per week - obviously not an issue in Latin. My daughter had Mr. King this past year for Third Form. He's a great teacher and he keeps a pretty tight rein on the class, which I loved. Meredith Cutrer has a great reputation as a Latin teacher, but my daughter has not had her except as a sub. Kevin Dray has been one of my daughters favorites, but she's not had him for Latin. He's very engaging. I don't know anything about the rest, but other than the one small issue I mentioned above, we have had a great experience with no complaints.
  21. There will be 5 levels of EGR, and there are currently only 4 available. Once EGR 5 is ready, it will replace Rod and Staff 8 in 8th grade.
  22. I initially avoided MP because it appeared to be heavy on the workbooks. We started using Prima in 3rd grade and loved it. We added a couple subjects in 4th grade and by 5th grade we were using nearly complete cores. I have three kids using MP and I do not feel the least bit bogged down in workbooks. We use them as study guides. Some work is written, some is discussed orally. While the guides may not work for everyone, don't discount them based simply on the appearance of a lot of workbooks.
  23. I use the tiles to teach the lessons - at least in the early levels. My kids almost never touch the tiles unless we are working on syllable division where I find them to be quite effective. Otherwise writing on the board works just fine.
  24. I enrolled my oldest with Kolbe for 4th grade, which at that time used Classical composition and Famous Men of Rome. We were also using Latina Christiana. By mid-year we loved the MP items so much that we abandoned Kolbe and moved to MP, adding in their literature and geography. In 5th we started nearly complete cores. If you want to enroll, you could enroll Kolbe, use the parts you like and substitute anything MP you like. Kolbe is very flexible in this way. There are so many Catholic families using MP. Some of the senior staff at MP are Catholic and some are Protestant so they do a good job tending to both. Most families add in the BC and/or Faith and Life. For the first couple of years after making the switch I continued to use the Kolbe religion plans, but we did it on our own this year. The biggest differences to me between Kolbe and MP are 1) MP covers less material but more deeply. If you look at the upper years, Kolbe schedules so much reading. 2) MP is very orderly. All the materials lend themselves quite nicely to a 33-34 week year with a lesson covered each week. There is predictability to the schedule. Kolbe's lesson plans were not as neatly wrapped into weeks with more variation as to how much material was to be covered. I believe they may have arranged it so that more difficult material gets more time and easier material less time. While this may be great, I prefer the predictability of knowing I need to complete a lesson each week. As far as oversight goes with Kolbe, I didn't feel there was much. I am certain if I reached out they would have helped me, but there is no one asking if work is getting done or making sure you report. So, if that is what you are seeking, I didn't find that.
