  1. This is my plan for third although now that I have written it down it seems like a lot. Singapore Primary Math plus CWP MP Astronomy (plus some BFSU mostly as a reading list) Faith & Life AAS AAR4 (if needed) MP Intro to Composition or WWE New American Cursive MP 3rd grade lit D'Aulaires Greek Myths Prima Latina MP English Grammar Recitation I (briefly covered because she has to test this year) States and Capitals
  2. I use Startwrite to teach the New American Cursive font in the HWT order. I really like the NAC font, but it teaches the letters in alphabetic order and really doesn't work on connections. HWT's teaching order is so much more logical, but I didn't like the font. However, none of my children has cursive that looks exactly like NAC, so it probably would have been easier to use HWT.
  3. I haven't seen it either, but have ordered Novare Physical Science for next year. It hasn't arrived yet, but these texts look great from the samples.
  4. Check out the books Memoria Press publishes on astronomy, mammals, insects, birds and trees. http://www.memoriapress.com/curriculum/science
  5. My son would have been in 4th grade this year in GA, but he was a late reader and so is completing 3rd grade work this year. I delayed my testing until the end of this year - his 3rd grade year. I do not believe the law specifies an age, only a grade.
  6. She will take: Classical Composition Refutation/Confirmation Middle School Lit II Classical Studies I Third Form Latin I am debating about Middle School US History. The original plan was composition only starting in 5th grade, but she wouldn't keep up with her reading so we added literature. The deadlines worked well for her so we added history and Latin this year.
  7. New Elementary Math Novare Physical Science MP Classical Studies - Iliad & Odyssey MP Story of the 13 Colonies/Great Republic MP Literature 7A/8M Third Form Latin Classical Composition Refutation/Confirmation Analytical Grammar Season 2 Faith & Life with BC2 Math and science are still up in the air a bit. I have AOPS, NEM & Dolciani, but I am leaning towards NEM. We will have used Singapore through 6B and it has worked well for us. I am ordering the Novare Physical Science text and plan to preview it over the summer. I really like the Novare physics first sequence, so I am hoping we can handle physical science in 7th. She will do several classes with the MP OL Academy. This child needs deadlines and the OL classes are the best way to get her to comply.
  8. My oldest two need standardized testing this year. My 3rd grader was a late reader and has really just hit his stride this year. I want a standardized test that will not overwhelm him. I'm thinking CAT. I've heard it's less rigorous and, I think that is what I want for him this go round. I do not plan to test in science or history. Oldest took the Stanford 3 years ago and did well, but she needed the time the Stanford allowed. I did not have her do science or history - just the core, and plan to do the same this year. Should I have her do the CAT with ds or should we stick with the Stanford for her? If Stanford, paper and pencil or computer? Last time she did paper and pencil, but Seton offers computer version.
  9. Oldest will do most of MP 7A with the following substitutions: AG Novare Physical Science New Elementary Math Faith & Life Son will do most of MP 4S with: Singapore Primary Math AAS Faith & Life Youngest will do most of MP 3A with: AAS Singapore Primary Math Faith & Life
  10. We found the transition to be smooth as well, and we are moving at the same pace as we did in AAR3.
  11. I haven't used it yet, but I am planning to use Physical Science next year. MP uses Physical Science, Introductory Physics and Chemistry in their online academy.
  12. I also like A Child's First Book of American History
  13. MP has a Mammals program as well as Insects. They are each intended to be used over a full year. I use a lot of MP but resisted their science materials until recently. We don't us the Tiner books they sell, but we like Mammals, Inssects, Birds and Trees.
  14. We use Singapore Primary Maths Standards Edition with Challenging Word Problems, and we love it.
  15. History - I never did much history in 1st, but would like to have done more read-alouds Science - read-alouds using BFSU as a spine Reading - AAR / I started MP lit halfway through AAR2 Phonics - AAR Handwriting - HWT for print plus New American Cursive Writing - No writing in 1st - I started WWE1 in 2nd grade Grammar - No grammar Spelling - We start AAS after finishing AAR1 Logic - No logic
  16. The first half of the K book is capital letters in gray blocks. Most of the rest of the book is spent on lower case with numbers at the very end. The lines are wider than 1st grade. Second grade starts with a very quick review of capitals, followed by lowercase (although there is a bit of review of capitals), then various print practice exercises, followed by numbers. The lines in 2nd grade are smaller than 1st. I like the 2nd grade book. There are a number of exercises we skip, but we have skipped some in each of the books. If your child needs help on capitals, I would use K. Otherwise I would use 1st again or move onto 2nd.
  17. I assume you are talking about Singapore Primary Math. I prefer the Standards Edition. The only issue is that they may be discontinuing it in favor of the Common Core Edition. Unfortunately, the Singapore forum has been down for more than a month, so you can't see if updates have been posted. You may want to email Jenny at Singapore for the latest. The CC edition is supposed to be very similar to standards, but there is no HIG. The Standards HIG is better than the US HIG and all the textbooks are in color.
  18. Skip K. Get the 2nd grade book for more print practice.
  19. Thanks! I had seen the samples and they were the same, but that thread answered my question.
  20. Have you seen this book? I have the original titled 'The Way Life Works' and am considering using it for Life Science in 8th grade. I was wondering how the newer edition compared. It seems the newer edition was geared to be a textbook where the original was not. I wondered if the newer edition had questions in the text as well as what sort of resources were in the teacher's guide.
  21. My oldest was also a very natural reader, but my son struggled and was very reluctant. AAR 1 was super slow moving for my son. I didn't think he would ever get better, but suddenly about a third of the way through AAR 2 his fluency really improved and halfway through he was able to start reading books like Little Bear. My youngest doesn't struggle, but isn't a motivated reader, and she did the same thing. Halfway through AAR2 and reading Little Bear. When we were stalled out we would read previous stories to improve fluency as well as confidence. The other levels have moved much faster for us.
  22. In Singapore Primary Math kids are not prevented from using positional notation, but are encouraged to also learn mental math techniques. What I like is that they teach several different strategies and leave it to the kid to choose which one works for them. One that is foreign to my daughter works for my son and vice versa. If a method doesn't make sense to the child and the child has a working method, we don't dwell on it. I have no experience dealing with this in public school, but when I hear public school parents complain about methods I recognize from Singapore Math, it is usually because students are being forced to use a particular method. In my (non-expert) opinion common core math is a poorly executed attempt at Asian math.
  23. i don't qualify quite yet, but it's still super cool. Thanks for sharing.
  24. Memoria Press has Famous Men of Rome starting in January. My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. She didn't take the online class for this one, but she is currently enrolled in Famous Men of the Middle Ages and really enjoys it.
