  1. This is basically what we do as well. One lesson over 2-3 days as needed. We need to add the 'Mark Progress Chart, jump up and down crazily' to our day though. ;) Sounds like so much fun!
  2. :iagree: I love this answer. It made me laugh, but it is SO true!!
  3. We would love to participate! PMing you with our info. We are currently in VA, but may be moving in a couple of months. : -)
  4. Please keep the Arnold family in your prayers. The article below is from a car accident that happened yesterday. The man killed is a home school father in our area. He is leaving behind his wife and three children. http://www2.tricities.com/tri/news/local/article/fatal_wreck_shuts_down_state_route_91_for_hours/47165/
  5. :iagree: That is what we are using and both ds8 and I are very happy. :)
  6. :iagree: It is the same in our home with my ds8. He just turned out last week and we are in WWE2. If he knows what he is supposed to spell and is really stuck I offer help on the word. It does take a lot of encouragement to get through the dictation- especially when I don't want him to 'hate' it. ;) We want schooling to be challenging at times, but for there to still be a love of learning.
  7. :lurk5: Any more input? Anyone? Thanks!
  8. Thanks for all of the input. Has anyone used the Trail Guide to World Geography? Anyone??
  9. Which one for my ds8? A Child's Geography: Explore His Earth or Trail Guide to World Geography Those who use either, can you tell me more about them? Thanks in advance!
  10. Definitely french doors and freezer on the bottom. We purchased one 4 years ago when we bought our current house and I have NEVER regretted it. LOVE IT! LOVE IT! LOVE IT! Finally enough space in the fridge and the bottom freezer is very convenient. BTW, we had the side by side in our previous house and I promised myself NEVER to buy one of them again. Hated it on a daily basis. Hope this helps!!
  11. My ds8 takes piano from an 18yo homeschooler. She charges us $52 per month for 4 - 45 minute lessons per month. Her charge for 30 minute lessons is $40 if I remember correctly. She teaches 12+/- homeschool children and does very well.
  12. Can you share the site you are referring to? Thanks!!
  13. My dd18 goes to college in Salem. She loves the area and we enjoy going up for visits. There are a lot of nice family activities (zoos, museums, parks, etc) in the area. I know there is at least one large homeschool group, but I do not know the name. Maybe you could google for it? I do not know a lot about housing in the area, but I would say general living is nice. Really it depends on what you are looking for and where you are coming from.
  14. My ds8 in just finishing the second grade, but so far I have simply used bankers boxes. I use one for each year and put our homeschoolers academic journal, his completed workbooks (usually mathematics), his binders and a few art projects. So far this has worked well for us.
  15. Us too! Mutual friend set us up after we both told her NO and NO THANKS! So glad she did not listen to either of us. :)
  16. DH is a plant manager and we were finally told that the plant will be closing. Around February/March -note that is the dead of winter is SW VA!- he will be out of a job.:ack2: We have seen it coming and have been looking for a couple of months. We are thankful to have this time before it actually happens. But, we are nervous. We all know what the economy is like. We have two DD's in college and I have been staying home with our DS8 for the past nine years. Please pray for us. We have accepted that we will most likely be moving out of our area- jobs here are severely limited. There is a Federal position that he is very interested in (out of the country) and would be great at. He went through two interviews for it last February and then the announcement was canceled due to an error in the posting. It was reopened three weeks ago and he has resubmitted for it. Please pray for our family, strength and peace. Please pray for God to leave the door open to the right job and to close the doors to all others. Thanks so much! :grouphug:
  17. My husband and I have a Shaklee business that we run together. He has another full time job and I home school our ds, so it is part time. It is something that you can work as much as you want and when you want. http://www.ewing-enterprises.myshaklee.com We both love their products, use them exclusively in our home and share them with others. It is very rewarding. I have another home school friend who started her own business called "momma goes green". She orders and sells organic and all natural products -water bottles, baby items, dish cloths, jewelry, etc. It does well. Another family in our area has a small farm. They supplement their income selling homemade breads, plants and eggs at our local farmers market. They do very well. Good luck!
  18. My ds7 is involved in a LEGO club. It was started in our area by another homeschool family. They meet 1x per month at a large conference room in our local library. The boys love it and talk about it all month! There has been discussions about making it 2x per month for that very reason. At ours, boys and girls are welcome, but we get a majority of boys. Good luck!
  19. Thank you! Thank you! I deactivated my account months ago and just got an email from a friend that she had left me a note on FB. What??? I did not know if was still there. Amazing. But now, in 14 days it will all be gone. Thanks again!
