Weaning--I am NOT good at this...
zookeeper replied to garddwr's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Trying to wean my 2.25 ds. With all the others, I've been about 4mths pg at this time and they weaned themselves. But we're not pg and he's not making it easy! We're down to 3 times a day. -
I had my first at 23 and my youngest at 38. While I'd really love to have another baby, I'm not so sure we will anymore. I've spent the last year getting my hormones balanced and am feeling SO GOOD that I'm not sure I want to throw all that away with another pg. I'm getting to be the "fun" mom that I've always wanted to be. I've got more energy than I've had in a decade and I'm just plain enjoying myself. I wouldn't be disappointed either way, but we're not actively seeking it anymore.

I only medicate for fevers if the child is miserable. My dc frequently get headaches with fever. That's usually the first sign. If sleeping it off doesn't work, or they can't sleep, I'll give meds.

So, what is a healthy size?
zookeeper replied to Soror's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I've never known what my BMI is either. I checked it out. It says 18.9 so low normal. Now if I gain weight, it goes right to my stomach and thighs. I know stomach fat is not healthy. I'm not sure it takes into account an individual person's build. I have a very small frame and don't think my weight is too little for my frame. I've been working on building muscle mass by lifting weights and I really feel better now than I did a decade ago. -
When I had that strange nausea thing with #5, it was my gallbladder. You could take some digestive enzymes to see if they help. The tiredness - yes, it can make a big difference. Are you taking/getting enough iron? Have you had your thyroid checked? Pregnancy is actually a risk factor for low thyroid.

Anyone had their child's adenoids removed?
zookeeper replied to bkpan's topic in General Education Discussion Board
My dd had her tonsils and adenoids out at 3. She'd been sick a lot before then. She's 12 now and it was one of the best things we did for her. They said she wouldn't want to eat much when she got home, but they were wrong! She ate a whole banana, 3 scrambled eggs and a bowl of ice cream. It really didn't slow her down much at all. The third day was the hardest but it still wasn't bad. -
How to tell when toddlers are in pain?
zookeeper replied to zookeeper's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Thank you for this! He actually slept pretty good last night. Woke up once, but went right back to sleep without any more meds. He seems chipper this morning. -

I'll look for some of that! Since he's trying to move around more, the gauze isn't staying on very well. -
How to tell when toddlers are in pain?

I get the bad mommy of the year award. :( We had burned a pile of brush on Thursday and he was walking around outside barefooted. He stepped in the ash and I guess it was still hot. Looking back, I was kinda glad he didn't have any shoes on. If he'd had shoes, he might have tried to walk further into the pile, fallen and been burned worse. As it is, he took one step and backed away. Poor kid! -
If you could have a massage, that might help some. Then once you can get some relief, start lifting weights! Start small (1 pound if you have to) and work up to about 5 pounds. I've had a bulging cervical disc for a while and have tried so many things. Useless and expensive physical therapy did nothing. I finally found a chiropractor who said I needed to start lifting weights. I can't tell you the difference! I don't have any neck pain at all anymore. I discovered I really LIKE lifting weights! It's been kinda fun seeing my muscles come back to where they're supposed to be.

How to tell when toddlers are in pain?
zookeeper replied to zookeeper's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Only putting the prescription silvadene cream on it! Hoping we can keep it from getting infected. I'm not too worried about right now, but once he's able to be back on it, we will have to keep it well covered. -
Recommend a cool mist humidifier, please.
zookeeper replied to 1GirlTwinBoys's topic in General Education Discussion Board
We've got a whole house humidifier (it's not quite big enough for our new house though. :glare:) I'm not sure of the kind but we bought it at Lowes. We've had it for several years and it's still going well. The one before that was from Sears and the only reason we got rid of it was because we needed a bigger one. It sits at the end of our hallway, down by the bedrooms. -

That's kinda what I was thinking too about needing pain meds! Hoping to prevent infection. Keep your fingers crossed! -

No he's not walking on it. He's learned to scoot on his bottom with his foot in the air. I really need to record it cause it's so cute. -
How to tell when toddlers are in pain?
zookeeper replied to zookeeper's topic in General Education Discussion Board
The dr said "as long as it's needed". :glare: I know burns are painful and this is a pretty bad one. Poor baby! I went ahead and gave him some a while ago because he was just so whiny and generally unhappy which is not like him. He seems to be in better spirits now. I'm putting silvadene ointment on it. It's a pretty big 2nd degree burn. Almost the whole bottom of his foot. :( -
question about fasting bloodwork can you..
zookeeper replied to dancer67's topic in General Education Discussion Board
You would get a clearer result if you skip the iron before the blood draw. When I have my thyroid checked, I always wait to take my meds until after the draw. I don't want to get an unusually high number because the med is so new in my system for the day. -
My 2yo ds burned the bottom of his foot pretty badly on Friday. We took him and they gave him some strong pain meds (it's a big burn!) I gave it to him regularly on Fri, Sat and Sun, but am unsure if he's still needing it. He seems to be in good spirits most of the time, but is being VERY clingy and has times where he's crying or just whining. I'm not sure if this is because of pain or what. What would be some ways to know if he's in pain or not? I don't want to give him the meds if he doesn't need them, but I don't want him to be in pain either.
