Kindy rambling with a Sonlight question
dakarimom5 replied to joannqn's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I'm going to use P4/5 for my kindergartener next year. I have looked at Core A and it just didn't appeal to me at all. -
I homeschool four children. I have found what works best for us is to rotate hourly. Everyone gets a solid hour with mom and then they rotate to something else, whether thats outside time or computer, whatever. But then after lunch is quiet time where I can see what is left and then I put on an educational movie and finish with anyone who needs help. Also, when I first started I only did the most important subjects. Then after a bit, I added other stuff.

possibly putting DS#2 in ps....
dakarimom5 replied to dakarimom5's topic in General Education Discussion Board
My son received special services when he was in school. Part of the reason I pulled him out was that they modified his work so much that he couldn't write a complete sentence. The other reason I pulled him out was that he was bullied. That resulted in me having to pick him up from school, in tears, at least once a week. My DH suggested we put him in at the start of the school year. But in thinking about all that I will have to line up concerning his IEP, that now might be the better time. It could all be done before high school next year. And neither my DH or son are thinking about what this will do to the household. No vacations in August and September, early bedtimes for him not the homeschoolers, no more movie nights in the middle of the week. My head is spinning at all the changes and challenges that I (not my DH) have to make. And Jean, to answer your question about social activities, we are a part of a homeschool group. But my DS doesn't really try to make friends with anyone when we do things. And most of the friends he has made are younger than him or people that talked to him first. Next year we were going to do football and a co-op. He has friends on our street that he hangs out with, plus he goes to the local activity center twice a week. -
I just want to cry. I feel like I have failed. I'm trying not to be all dramatic and make it about me, but I am very upset. My 13yo DS is unhappy. He says he wants to go back to ps so he can get a "social life". I keep saying that that is not the reason children go to school . And I am just frustrated because he and my DH see bullying as normal, something that happens to everyone. I'm really just thinking out loud here since I have 20 million things running through my head. Do I put him back in now or wait until next year when he starts high school? Did I do enough academically? When I brought him home at the end of 6th grade he read and wrote at a 3rd grade level, I know he has improved greatly but I'm not sure he is up to grade level yet. I wasn't going to start high school level courses until the year after next. I just don't know which is the right way to go. Do I put him into school where he wants to be but knowing that he will be bullied? Or do I keep him home where he is unhappy and makes teaching the littles difficult? Anyone have any wisdom or BTDT?

I went to the dentist today

I had to have two crowns today. It wasn't horrible but it was painful. The numbing meds kept wearing off so the dentist had to keep renumbing me. That was awful especially since I have a huge fear of the dentist. They numbed me so much that I now look like I had Botox done and my whole face, including my eyelids, is numb. I am very concerned that I will have the same problem when I have my fillings done. Has anyone had this problem or have any words of wisdom? Update.....I ate a french fry for dinner tonight and swallowed my crown! I am terrified I will have to pay for another temporary crown. And of course I'm scared of being in pain until Monday and of having to go through all that pain to get another temporary crown.

I know you are in Huntsville, but if you are willing to drive to Decatur and have insurance, Alabama Psych Services is usually good about scheduling new patients quickly. You can pm me if you would like more info.:grouphug: -
possibility of moving to KY

Anyone?:bigear: -
My DH has put in an application for the federal prison system. He was asked to give his top choices of location. He chose Montgomery,AL and Ashland, KY. Since we live in Al I have all the info I need, but not KY. Anyone live there and have info for me? I'm mostly interested in homeschooling and vax exempt info but anything would be great.

My 10yo told my 8yo that if you wash your hair and rinse so the shampoo goes down your body It counts as washing! -
I keep getting the same homeschool question, over and over again. In the last few weeks I have been asked more than once if I would like to homeschool a family members children. This is odd to me since I'm usually put down for homeschooling. When the subject was brought up I politely declined. I love homeschooling my children but I don't want to take on anyone else's children. Is this odd to anyone else?

All of my children are picky eaters. That being said, I allow them to not eat one food. For my 10 yo that is potatoes, including french fries. Everything else is a one bite rule. If you don't eat dinner than there is nothing else that night. Another thing I do is only fill my house with good food. There is no sugar, gummi snacks or soda in my house. And everyone has free reign on snacks, except my 8yo who will go through 5 lbs of apples in a day if I'm not careful.

Then this is the thread for you! My DD is 5yo with a September birthday, so technically she wouldn't start kindy until next year. She wants to read and is slowly working her way through the I See Sam books. But she is not grasping blending. For example, she knows c-a-t is cat but when she gets to r-a-t rat she says," rrrrrrrrr cat." I'm not sure if this is a developmental thing or if I need to throw money at the problem. So, if you had a child that did this, could you please tell me how you helped them? I've been thinking about ETC but I'm not sure if that would address the problem. Thanks.
