  1. I am not super spontaneous, so it would be hard to shift thoughts for me, but, like you, I'd try. But some things are commitments that you can't drop last minute--like ds's FLL meeting today with the competition next week. A five year olds hockey practice I would drop, but probably not a12 year olds. I like advanced notice.
  2. I found AP and intro statistics infer Specialized in the independent learner section, but no Calculus. Prep for calc and ap review calc. I wonder why? Sorry.
  3. Are you sure? I am sure there used to be Statistics and Calculus. Maybe under a different category? I can't check easily Snd link right now, though.
  4. We do and really like it. My student is learning. It's all pro for us. I suppose the only con would be if you want s lot of outside work. Ds has about two hours of work outside class. Sometimes less. It's what we want-active learning but not crazy rigorous. Even that could be negotiated with the teacher, though. It's very flexible. I love that ds had to speak every class and do things like make up stories.
  5. The before is to have a baseline and to make sure you start below 120. If you are higher than 120, you shouldn't eat. I don't test before unless I think my blood sugar is still too high from a previous meal. There is a website Blood Sugar 101 which is very helpful. The one hour is for me more indicative of how my body handles those foods. The two hour shows hoe quickly I rebound. Some meals my one hours are okay, but don't really go down much by two hous and actually keep my blood sugar up at three hours.
  6. I wish I'd thought of that! He would have loved it. Fortunately, I had a fourth who did read Frog and Toad and ds "caught up" by reading them when I had them out. He has also gone back and read the Magic Tree House books and some of those other easy chapter books.
  7. This was a regular occurrence during indoor recess when I taught elementary school, too.
  8. Just wanted to share that my third was exactly like your child. He refused to read or try to read Frog and Toad b/c he wanted to read what his older siblings were reading, so he learned to read from the first Harry Potter, too--word by painstaking word. Maybe you and I should get together and start a homeschooling reading philosophy! LOL
  9. Yes, and it's weighted toward the past couple of weeks before the test. I always test right before Thanksgiving, never in January. And add me to the ones who can't have any grains. Also, test one hour after, not two. My two hour numbers are usually fine, it's the one hour ones that show which food is the problem for me.
  10. I'm sure there are secrets on my dad's side that I don't know about. My Mom always said that there family was always like, "Aunt Madelyn has cancer, but don't talk about it, it's a secret." He has passed and I'm not close to that side of my family. My Mom's family talks about everything including her Mom who ran off with a traveling salesman when she was 18 (and later divorced--this was over 100 years ago!) and her sister who went crazy and threatened to kill my mom and her brother. Everything is right out there in the open. About making things secret--I have a cousin who committed suicide and my kids do know (well the older 3),but if felt awkward telling them. It's not b/c of shame--more like they didn't know him, rarely (like once or twice so far in their life) met my aunt, uncle and his sister and it just didn't seem apropos to anything in their life so it felt forced, if you know what I mean. I could easily have made it a secret, when it's more like something that never came up. I know a secret about why my grandmother had the nickname for my grandfather that she did. She always said it was a silly romantic thing. I found out reading their letters that were stored in the attic. I've decided not to tell it while my Mom's generation is alive, just b/c it feels like she wanted it private from her kids and it would seem wrong to say it, iykwim. If anyone else knows, they haven't said anything, either.
  11. Excellent! So glad that he and you found something that worked. Teen boys can be something else. What a sigh of relief! I'm sure it's party time at Chez Ktgrok!
  12. And make sure that they broke down good vs bad cholesterol. My good cholesterol is off the charts excellent and drives my total up over the high line. My bad cholesterol is within limits.
  13. Oh, Halcyon, I could have written your post! Dh and I probably aren't the most driven individuals in the world, but we are both first born over-achievers who were serious students and worked hard to reach our goals of getting into great colleges. We have been blessed with a very bright, but laid back Type-B oldest son. When he was 5 and I knew he was very bright, I imagined how we would homeschool high school and all the wonderful achievements he would rack up and the awesome schools he would get into. Ha-ha Not that he's not taking good classes, but he is not self-motivated and driven. I have come to embrace who he is and he may end up happier and less stressed. He is an awesome kid, but is not externally motivated to over-achieve. He is motivated by his passions. I, like Regentrude, have realized my ds can finish projects, learn information, work hard and perservere, but at this stage of maturity, it helps if it is in his passion. But, to encourage you, at 16 he is miles and miles better than he was at 14. He is doing really well in all his online classes and has been putting more than the minimum into his "home" classes. He's not overachieving, but I am not the one driving him to do well. He's going to be fine. (And I live in a NYC suburb and my throat closes when I talk to some of the parents. It's nuts what is going on around here and there's no way my kid can compete b/c there's no way dh and I would put our family through that kind of pressure. It's not healthy; it's crazy. Try not to pay attention or talk to those friends.)
  14. That's what I'm thinking for me, too. Definitely I feel less well in just days if I stop taking 5000mg a day. I just started ds on D again bc he was showing the mood signs he had when he was low and in 3 days of 4000mg he is much more stable.
  15. Oh and your jalapeño peppers and ice cream reminded me that jalapeño potato chips and ice cream we're favorite third pregnant snack.
  16. Awww. It is crazy. Hang in there! ( and my pre-first pregnancy righteous self would have so thought my first pregnancy self was just making excuses to eat unhealthfully. How I laugh now!) Whatever gets you through.. Stay hydrated, take your vitamins--only at night! And do the best you can.
  17. Lol My 16 year old son is cracking up, too. I don't even want to KNOW what my children would think would send me to my knees. You are so going to think about this every time you are at SAM's from now on.
  18. You, too, might be a candidate for Slurpees. LOL It's like mine knew they'd only get breastmilk and organic food for the next 2 years and they had to stock up on the chemicals. As my in-laws were sending wheat grinders so baby could get fresh ground bread (I kid you not!) I was knocking down the Slurpees just to get through the day. I couldn't even look at a cucumber or sweet potato. Ugh.
  19. This--I always check the date with two other Moms to see if their child can make it. I think I have fears ignore one showing up--but with my system, we always have folks! I think your party seems great. I do prefer 1 1/2 hours, bc you will be exhausted and folks can always hang out after watching their kids. Do balloons. We give small beanies of a large lollipop instead of bags. Have fun!
  20. Low levels affect my mood. I am more depressed when my levels are low and people around me start asking if I haven't taken supplements in just a few days. It also builds the immune system.
