URGENT Scary Prayer Request
momof165 replied to Kate CA's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Oh, Kate! I can't find words.......My prayers go out to them and we'll continue praying for this family. -
:iagree: with Cornerstone Classical. We have used Saxon for K and 1st, tried a different Math program for 2nd and it was TERRIBLE. Now, we are back using Saxon 3 for the same reasons. It's easy to use, each concept is taught thoroughly and my ds loves the manipulatives. No more experimenting for us. Sonja _________________________ ds (8)

Talk to me about "Growing With Grammar."
momof165 replied to JudyJudyJudy's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We are using GWG 3 for about 2 weeks now with ds 8. We use it 3x a week (Mon., Wed., Fri.). It's a fresh breeze after doing R&S 2 last year. My son just couldn't handle R&S anymore :tongue_smilie: - so we tried GWG this year. So far its' a great fit for us. But keep in mind, we don't use it everday. But with my son, grammar just isn't a subject you can do on a daily basis. :glare: It's just him. Sonja _____________________ ds (8) -

I am using Song School Latin with my ds 8. We do one lesson per week. It's pretty easy to implement into our daily schedule since it takes us only about 15 min per day. On Fridays, we do our chapter review with test. My son really loves the songs and I can hear him singing and humming these tunes during the day. It's really a wonderful Latin course for the early elementary grades (1-3). :001_smile: Sonja _________________________________ Married to my best friend for almost 11 years Mom to ds 8

Currclick has their big summer sale/back to school sale. You can buy all the History Scribe and Happy Scribe books for $1.20 or $1.60 each. I think that's a super great deal for those of you who use the notebook approach. I just picked up a couple for copywork and for history. Can't beat the price.:001_smile: Hope someone else can use these as well. Their website is: www.currclick.com/index.php Sonja _____________________ Mom of ds 8

We used Saxon Math for 2nd Grade and my son had a really, really hard time with it. For him, it just jumped around too much. He needs to grasp a concept before moving on to something new. Both of us were really glad when we finished this course. That said, I still don't know what to do for 3rd Grade. I might try a mixture between R&S and Singapore Math - but still unsure. Sonja

What program would you suggest for my ds7?
momof165 replied to Dianne-TX's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I think R&S by itself would be too much repitition for your son. Have you looked at MEP Math? It is free and it is great for building logical thinking skills and it includes a LOT of mental math. Learn Language with "Muzzy"... Does it work?
momof165 replied to fruitful vine's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Hello Jennifer, we have used Muzzy German and my son really liked it. :) However, he was exposed to the German language before we started using Muzzy. For him, it was just a fun way to reinforce what he has learned so far. This program uses only native speakers, so pronunciation is perfect. I just don't know if a child can really learn German from this video course if he/she has not been exposed to the language before. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. Sonja -
Dawn, thanks for sharing all those wonderful links with us. Sonja

Tracy, thank you so much for your wonderful response. It really helped me make up my mind for our writing curriculum. I'll be ordering WT 1 for my son. I think it will be a great fit for him/us. Thanks again for sharing your information. I am so glad I have found this board. All of you have been a blessing in getting my curriculum plans finalized. I just have changed to the WTM philosophy mid-year. So, a LOT is new and I am only in my 2nd year hs. Hopefully, down the road, I'll be as knowledgeable as you all.:001_smile: Sonja

Fun Music History and Art History Programs?
momof165 replied to Melinda in VT's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
This is a really neat site for studying music, music appreciation, music lessons, etc. It is not free......but they have a nice variety for music education.... http://www.friendshiphouse.com/ Sonja -
I voted for German and like to add Russian, maybe Spanish later. Both, my husband and I are bilingual/trilingual - so, it's easiest to teach the languages we are fluent in. :D Isn't that an easy way out? Thank you so much for all your replies. I don't know what I would do without you. This board has been a real blessing to my hs endeavour trying to find a suitable curriculum for my ds. :D I definitely will use the google books. Thanks so much for posting this. I had no idea what "lost" treasures I can find there.;) Sonja

I just stumbled upon these books when looking at http://www.lostclassicsbooks.com/. Has anyone used these Elson books? They look very cool - but I just haven't found anyone who has used these. :glare: I just have such a hard time this year coming up with a good reading, writing and LA program for my ds. He'll be starting 3rd Grade in fall. Any thoughts, input, ideas????? Thanks ladies for helping me out once again.
