  1. My DS5 likes those Jumping Bean shorts too. I like the price. He likes to be just like Dad. :D Glad you found such a great deal!
  2. Well, I think I'd go for Dewey classification. You don't need to be super detailed (like insisting fairy tales be 398.2, lol) but you could go by 10s or so: 520 for planets and 590 for animals, for example. I'm a librarian and my home library is organized more or less along these lines. :)
  3. I thought about it after I posted and you're right about the classics, but I know I didnt have the samples on my Color when I first bought it. Maybe they didn't do it when the Colors were first released? I bought mine pretty quickly. I had a cookbook and a another title-- Conquistadora, I think-- that were on my NC. I remember when they appeared and how annoyed I was then they wouldn't DISappear. Lots about Nook that made me fall out of love. I sold them and switched to a Kindle. :tongue_smilie: ETA: I just added a sample to my Nook app for iPad. No email.
  4. I think it's possible it just appeared. I had some random samples show up on my Nook Color. They were innocent though. One was a housekeeping book [ETA: not that it matters, but I just looked and it was a cookbook!] and some classics. It still annoyed me, to be honest. :glare: I'm sorry, OP. I'd demand some explanation, and I'd probably return it if they couldn't satisfactory handle it. Oh, and DON'T let them charge you a restocking fee! :grouphug:
  5. The article I read said her mom was in a different aisle, but it didn't say how far away (one aisle over vs. across the store).
  6. I tend to agree. I think Waldorf has a great emphasis on handwork and arts integration in the early years, but this seems a little like "pea and stick" work. If this was truly the bulk of the main lesson it is sorely lacking depth and breadth. (And this is coming from a musical family...DH rebuilds pipe organs in his spare time. :tongue_smilie:)
  7. :iagree: My knowledge of RAD comes as a sibling. My parents adopted internationally twice. The first time was the early '90s when I was 10 and my sister 6. The child was 4 or 5. He had to be placed in the care of another family several years later, and from there eventually went to a children's home. He got very good help there, and while he isn't fully "cured," he is able to have normal, albeit somewhat superficial relationships. He is a functional member of society. He finished college, had a job, and actually recently was accepted into the Peace Corps! He has re-connected with his birth family and visits us once a year or so. The seond adoption years later (I was 16) and again, a 4 yo boy. This child was severely damaged. It absolutely destroyed my mother. Even my dad didn't fully get it, and he was with us four years before being placed out. Ten years later, I know my mom hasn't fully recovered, and she's fairly anti-adoption now, sadly (and she was adopted herself!). :( Anyway, the second boy is 18 now, and my parents are in touch with him again to see what the future might hold. :iagree: My mom had no support. It seemed in those days in our area NO ONE knew RAD. She reached out to social services and was threatened with abandonment and possibly even removal of my sister and I. Shocking, really. :glare: My husband's sister was adopted, and does not have RAD. His brother and wife are exploring adoption, and I confess I worry for them quite a bit. So, :grouphug: for Denise in her family. There are no words for what you're living.
  8. Full time, all three boys. If we have any more, we'll continue CD. My mom cloth diapered my sister and I and it never occurred to me to do otherwise. My sister initially thought I was crazy, but then she went on to use cloth with her DD. :D
  9. Love the Hot Wheels! I'm wish listing it! :D The boys have stainless steel bowls, spray bottles, boats, and Toobs of marine animals, penguins, etc.
  10. Oh! That reminds me what else I was going to add! It also said that some varieties of PB might not even be available during the shortage. :(
  11. I read an article in the fall about a peanut shortage due to weather conditions in the south that warned about big jumps in the price of PB. We always buy natural-organic, so I stocked up through our co-op. Other than that, I haven't noticed too much. DH has done the shopping the last two weeks and totals are about what I expect. Last year and this year, Wegmans has been holding the price of staples, and that has helped some.
  12. We don't live anywhere near a Costco and I've never been in a Sam's. I also haven't been in a BJs since I was a kid, but my mom did a lot there. She and my sister share a membership now, and we're getting one through DH's work next month. I'm excited! Mom and sis have been finding a lot there that we use/eat: K-cups, Annie's, organic yogurt, batteries. She's even found some gems among the children's books. Anyway, I'm especially interested in the organic selection. We have Wegman's in our area and that's very good, but there are some things they don't have that I know BJ's does, and I've been comparing prices. BJ's does win for some things...or at least matches Wegs. In another month, I should have some more helpful info. I'm curious what others say as well. :bigear:
  13. Well, I don't completely disagree, but this instance was more like her husband told her not to breastfeed because it would interfere with his pleasure. That would not fly in my world, but obviously she was okay with it.
  14. I don't know if "abhorrent" is the right word for this attitude, but there's a member of the MOMS Club in my old town who chose not to breastfeed because her bOOks are for her husband. I think he was against it as well. Didn't want to lose his playthings. :glare: That's an attitude that could use changing, IMO.
  15. We put our house on the market July 1, 2010, four months before baby was due. We planned to pull it off mid-October if it hadn't sold so we wouldn't end up moving with a newborn. It didn't sell, so that's what we did. Four days after DS#3 was born, we got a call that someone wanted to make an offer. We plan, God laughs, right? We accepted, had to househunt with a two week old, and we moved when he was two months old, mid-January. It was hard, but we made it. In your case, OP, at least you wouldn't have winter to deal with, so I'd do it!
  16. It really isn't hard to find canned tomatoes without added salt and other junk (organic or not). I don't live in an area with Trader Joes, Whole Foods, etc. and even our store brand offers salt-free, etc. I also order from Amazon Subscribe and Save for things like that... Now the BPA in the cans is a separate issue, and Eden offers jarred tomatoes now in crushed, diced, and sauce. I love it! :D ETA: Pomi tomatoes in boxes is another option.
  17. Animalogic and Rush Hour Jr. are two favorites here right now. We also like Rivers, Road, and Rails and the games from Family Pastimes mentioned by a PP. ETA: Oops, posting at the same time as Lisbeth!
  18. There are a few YouTube videos comparing the two that might be helpful. :) If we were going to lift the screen time ban, my DH said the same thing. Problem is, I don't want to give up my iPad time.
  19. Thanks for the link! Just requested from the library! A year or so ago, my mom found this book on the bargain table at B&N: http://www.amazon.com/Old-Time-Brand-Name-Cookbook-Illustrations-Kitchens/dp/0810982099 It is such a fascinating read about the transition to convenience cooking! ETA: I think many of you would also enjoy Food of a Younger Land.
  20. I've seen this several times on this board, and wanted to address it. I have a Kindle Touch, and it's not actually necessary to move your finger across the screen to turn pages. The touch screen is so sensitive that barely tapping it will turn the page. No smudges, and the screen is perfect. :D If one wanted to be especially scrupulous, it's possible to tap to turn the page outside of the text area. I had the same concern before I bought it, and even the demo models in-store weren't as sensitive as the actual Touch. I think it's a better touchscreen than the Fire, to be honest. You do have to to tap in just the right area to go back a page and to bring up the header/footer with menu options so that might be a reason to avoid the Touch (I've turned pages when I didn't mean to, and so has my toddler if I'm not quick enough!), but a smeared screen isn't a big concern.
  21. :D Excellent name! That's true for most retailers (Target, Gap Inc., etc.) but not exactly how NYers (and other states) came to pay sales tax for Amazon. There was specific legislation aimed at Amazon and several accompanying lawsuits. I no longer remember the details, but it was big news several years ago. ETA: The NY legislation was designed to get around a ruling that said retailers aren't required to collect sales tax from customers who live in states where the businesses have no physical presence.
  22. Tip of the Empire State iceberg. :tongue_smilie: :glare: I definitely would say go Amazon for the customer service. I've never had Kindle troubles, but they have always been great with other orders! :)
  23. :D http://www.otterbox.com/amazon-kindle-dx-cases/amazon-kindle-dx-cases,default,sc.html I want one for the Fire!
