  1. :iagree: We just had the control board go out on a four year old Frigidaire. Rather than replace it for $178 plus shipping and pray it "took", we decided to just get a new machine. Hope this one lasts! (KitchenAid)
  2. I couldn't find the sample schedule other than what's in the introductory pages. Is that the one you meant? 5 minutes for journal, 5-10 minutes poetry, etc? I did locate the games checklist, and we have been using it. Thanks! He is not reading as he's just turned 5 and beginning to show interest. I think we'll break each lesson into 2-3 days minimum, with lots of review and not rushing through the independent work or the phonetic farm activities. I may even drop that temporarily. It's a layer I think could wait until later in the process. Yes, I definitely plan on the writing program taking several years. I think the DVD said through second grade or so, depending on the child. His writing is actually coming along well; his fine motor skills are strong, but I'm not convinced he's actually ready to put the pieces together to read. Did you start AAS1 when you were done with part 1 of the writing? I think the scope and sequence says you can start it around lesson 12, but again, I'm not sure we need that layer quite yet. Thank you, I will!
  3. We started a few things August 1, but we'll have an "official" first day when the PS kids go back after Labor Day. The neighborhood bus stop is our front lawn, so it's momentus when the school bus runs start up! :glare: I'm not exactly sure what my plan is yet. School cones possibly, pictures, a special breakfast, and a park trip!
  4. :lurk5: I just posted a similar question about phonics/writing. It's taking so much time, that's all we've been doing! DS asks for more, but I feel like kindy should not be so time intensive!
  5. Just an update! I've changed what we're doing quite a bit! After more reading around here, we've switched to Primary Arts of Language for K, as I'm looking ahead to Phonics Road for grade 1. I really like PAL, but I'm still figuring out how best to schedule it. DS is enjoying it, and my 3 yo is picking up a lot too and playing the games. I actually think all the sounds practice will help his speech (initial consonant deletion)! We're still doing a little Earlybird A, but moving into Rightstart A. I've loved this program from afar for years, but now that it's in my hands, I'm unsure about it. Maybe Miquon or Essentials?? I'm not sure how much we'll do with Winterpromise Animals (just the reading maybe), and I'll probably add in some SL Core A. I also have Elemental Science Intro that we've played around with once or twice. My love for Waldorf calls me in the fall, so we'll be adding lots of seasonal crafts, stories, and nature time too! :D
  6. If you are using PAL Reading and/or writing, how are you pacing it? Are you attempting one lesson of reading and writing in one day or are you breaking it down (that seems much more reasonable)? If you're doing the latter, how are you breaking it into chunks? We've done most of lessons 1-4 (over two weeks, about 6 sessions), and we're covering the content in each lesson in one day, but stretching the practice. We're still spending more than an hour, and although DS is enthusiastic and isn't restless or tired, it feels like way too much. The suggested time for each part of the program adds up to quite a bit and reminds me of the large chunks of time spend on ELA in primary public school classrooms. I feel as though I haven't found my rhythm with the program yet, and would love feedback from others using it. Thanks! :)
  7. :iagree: Uncertified subs make around $100/day depending on your area and certified even more. My sister is a certified special ed teacher who subs part-time so she can HS her DD. Good subs are ALWAYS in demand. Also, some states have "fast track" programs leading to certification. They're for folks making a career change and/or who already meet some requirements. Some of my dad's friends were doing it in FL several years back and a close friend's DH here in NY too. :grouphug: and prayers too.
  8. Yes, I could, then I read the article and checked my answer. It is very subtle. If I look too long, my eyes start to ache and they all look the same.
  9. We just paid $40.88 for water from April-June. I believe sewer is included with our property taxes. Five people, 14,000 gallons. That's slightly less than the previous three months which was $43. I expect the next cycle will be more since the boys did a lot of water play during July.
  10. I started college here: http://www.simons-rock.edu/ so my perspective is a little different. With the right support system in place, yes I would. Because SRC is set up for young, minor students, I would consider it for my boys (more supervision than most colleges, but less than a boarding school). A typical campus? Probably not, but it depends on the child/college too.
  11. :iagree: I also recommend the version that comes with CDs. It's read by David Suchet and just marvelous! We listen in the car and read several chapters each night. They are really internalizing the stories and lessons. I love that the story of Christ's redemptive work is woven throughout.
  12. We bought this at the LEAH convention this year. When I told my sister about it, she liked the idea so much I went back and bought another box! We're going to do it with our 3 year olds this year. There are a few book choices we don't love, but the ready to go factor is a huge plus for us!
  13. I'll second Kohls. I've had lots of good luck with great choices and prices.
  14. Not as funny, but I have: Borders closing for good Where Should He Take Me? :D
  15. I got the same email today but AFTER UPS had brought my delivery. Don't lose hope! I got two boxes with a few Educo play food toys for my boys' birthday party this weekend. Also a few schooly items: Child Size Masterpieces, Inchimals, and a new children's Bible. I'm really excited for a set of 100 Magnatiles tomorrow and Rightstart A and PAL Reading and Writing Friday!
  16. My second grade teacher taught us that trick too! My personal annoyance is faze and phase: My toddler's biting phase doesn't faze me. Yes, "faze" IS a real word! Use it! Love it!
  17. This will only work if the Protestant in question understands that the creeds aren't "Catholic" but Christian. I just ran into to this issue on a blog team. The editor decided she wanted to add a SOF representative of her Bible-believing faith. Since there was another Catholic in the group too (though admittedly she doesn't practice), I suggested the Apostle or Nicene Creeds since they are inclusive of all Christians. She said she wasn't going to print something just to suit my beliefs. The SOF she was using as a basis was this one, and despite my explanations and ideas to adjust it to NOT exclude the majority of Christians (Catholics, Orthodox, mainline Protestants), she couldn't or wouldn't understand what I was suggesting. Needless to say, I left the blog and our friendship essentially ended. :( Anyway, carry on! This is still obviously a very sore spot for me!
  18. Me too! :D I've always been fond of this too: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:License_plate_preamble.jpg
  19. My DS5 is not official with the state until next year, but we've been having fun with Singapore Earlybird A and HWT pre-k. We're going to do WP Animals and ETC this fall. Enjoy ourselves and work on maintaining a routine until we start "for real" fall 2012.
