What are your teens reading this summer?
AlisonK replied to yvonne's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
My DS (16) decided to read Anna Karenina this summer. It is a long book but he says it's fantastic and is really enjoying it. -
Thank you G5052! I will definitely look in to that program. Have you taken classes with this school? It looks great from the description.

I am so very sorry. You are in my prayers.

I am trying to find an online AP Latin class for my son. He has some other classes that are making it challenging to find an AP Latin class that doesn't conflict. I have tried both Lone Pine and Lukeion and they both conflict with his other classes (T/Th). Does anyone have any other ideas for me? I really appreciate the help!

I am another one who has been duped by this company. I also wrote and asked for a refund and was ignored. How these people sleep at night is beyond my ability to comprehend. My budget is so tight and the money I lost could have been put to good use to buy curriculum that I needed this year. I am also disgusted at the way they treat customers that have legitimate complaints. They are banning everyone who speaks out!

Chapter books for 6 year old at 3 to 4th grade reading level
AlisonK replied to cagirlintexas's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I can't thank you enough for the tip about Thornton Burgess free on Kindle! Our library had the whole set and gave them away! My son was so sad. You made our day! :hurray: -
My Father's Dragon (all 3) are way better to listen to then read. The voices are wonderful. I second the suggestion for Cricket in Times Square...the voices and music are great!

I am considering Horizons Math for DS who will be in 6th grade in September. A friend gave me the Horizons 6 book to look at. I don't really see clear instructions on how to teach. I also wondered if a child is having trouble with a problem not related to the new topic, how do you know which lesson to go back to to review? I like the look of Horizons a lot. However, I am very concerned that I am going to be searching the internet to figure out how to teach the lessons properly. Am I missing something?

I have similar hair and love this shampoo. Once I knew I liked it I found it in a gallon size and it's even cheaper. The ingredients are natural and I like the smell too. I use conditioners from the same brand and they have al been very nice too. http://www.iherb.com/Giovanni-50-50-Balanced-Hydrating-Clarifying-Shampoo-8-5-fl-oz-250-ml/6398

Took levaquin. Now I'm freaking out. . . .
AlisonK replied to 1bassoon's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I had a similar reaction to Levaquin. I took it and woke up with hives in my throat in the middle of the night. It was very scary. It was a while ago and I still have to remember to tell doctors to update my records. I hope that you are feeling better every day. -
Please share your first read aloud of the year
AlisonK replied to creekmom's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We are also reading The Hobbit and Winnie the Pooh. I think one of our first read alouds when school starts will be The Life and Legacy of Saint Patrick. -
I believe I read that CS Lewis said they could be read either way. Some people seem to prefer them in published order and some prefer them in story order. We are reading them in story order with The Magicians Nephew first.

Weird Question but my Daughter is facinated with idioms
AlisonK replied to AnnaM's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
This is one of my favorite books! It would be perfect for a child who is enjoying idoms so much! -
We use this one and really like it. I was just going to suggest it to you.

Thank you all for the helpful responses! I am wondering one thing about Meet the Masters. How good are the art projects? Are they simply trying to copy the master's work from the current study? Or are they learning art concepts along with various techniques the master's use. I hope that makes sense.
-
Can anyone give me an idea of how Meet the Masters and Atelier Art differ. I am trying to choose between them. Both seem to have good reviews here, although Atelier has some unfavorable ones also. Thanks!

I just buy the $10.99 workbooks off their website and the $5 shipping. I haven't used any teachers manuals ...hope I am not missing something!! :D

:iagree: I was just going to add Nate the Great. Along that line is the A to Z Mysteries. They are a perfect step up.

Good books for 3rd graders to read? (chapter books)
AlisonK replied to ChristusG's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I would say anything by E.B White: Charlotte's Web, Stuart Little, Trumpet of the Swan. Also, The Boxcar Children is such a great series for that age and has a ton of books. My son read the original Pinocchio and Homer Price in 3rd grade also. HTH :001_smile: -

A new favorite of mine for dinner is a taco bowl. Pre-cook and freeze the taco meat before you leave. Use Fritos or something like it in the bottom of a bowl, add the meat (after heating it up) with some shredded cheese, and whatever else you bring with you. We like salsa, sour cream, tomatoes and lettuce. It has been a big hit with kids and adults when we camp.
