  1. I have several subscriptions. The cat litter will show up as scheduled, but the cat food has been listed as "temporarily unavailable" for a couple of weeks and won't be delivered. Never had issues before.
  2. That is not entirely correct. You can choose for each assignment whether it is based on points or percent. For point based assignments, you don’t need to define weights. Adding more assignments later in the course means more points will be available, and the grading scale will be affected accordingly, unless those assignments are set to count zero points.
  3. Keeping you in my thoughts and sending good vibes for clarity and peace
  4. I remember that I thought I would never retire and that I would teach for free if they let me. That was ten years ago. Now I am sick of the rubbish, too. During the pandemic I had daily rage-quitting fantasies. It's slightly better now, but once DH retires, I will, too.
  5. I think that's a fundamentally different situation from a person who spent those 25 years working the same job and is suffering from burnout. I have 20 years of energy in me, too, but I am sick of the continually increasing demands, the ridiculous time-wasting requirements that overshadow the actual part of my job that I like. When dh retires, he will finally be able to focus completely on his research, without committees, meetings, reports etc. He will get to do the *work* he loves, without the interference of the administrative tasks the *job* demands.
  6. Got booster before Thanksgiving. I traveled internationally and attended concerts etc. No Covid. Knock on wood.
  7. I looked at their physics text, and not only were there typos, but sloppy notation and many errors in the example problem solutions. During my first 15 minute browse I submitted four errata and decided against adopting the text for my class. It's open source, so this is how it works. You get what you pay for.
  8. @kathyl"And, yes, he keeps asking ME what we're going to "do today". At least once, every day. Every morning ... right after he asks me how I slept last night. Argh!! " Isn't that a normal thing couples do? We talk about the day ahead each day, and what's going on, and when we're not working (summer, weekend), we discuss "what we're going to do today" (or more likely, what we're going to do *tomorrow*, so we can get an early start.)
  9. This. There was no actual information, just platitudes and obvious stuff.
  10. Would it make it clearer if I replaced figs by f&*$s?
  11. I went to college in Germany. My transcript has three grades, based on three comprehensive oral examinations over 5 semesters of math, 8 semesters of theoretical, and 8 semesters of experimental physics. For each class, we had one exam and one comprehensive final. No other grades. ( and again, these didn't even make the final transcript)
  12. No, you're not awful for not calling your DH. What good would that do? If he needs help, I'm sure he has a way to contact someone, or they're working in teams ( I don't know the nature of his job). Your mom sounds like she has anxiety. My grandma, my dad's mom, once had a phone call with him that got cut off, and she phoned my mother's *work* and had her lessons interrupted so mom could check on him because grandma was convinced my dad had keeled over with a heart attack or something. Very bizarre. But she was just very anxious. We always had to call that we made it home okay, etc. People with anxiety do weird things.
  13. No more figs to give. It's quite freeing. Knowing that the kids will be okay if something happens to me; they have an education and are on their way in the world. Still waiting for that blessed stage of no periods. Uggh.
  14. No help. My DH worked in a different town and came home for weekends. My parents were busy; both were still working.
  15. Okay, then I wouldn't worry and simply do the assignments. And casually follow up later. It's entirely possible a syllabus has been uploaded but the prof forgot to click "publish". Or they're not done yet - because the school changed last minute what boilerplate language they require in all syllabi. Eta: when I was in college, we didn't have syllabi for any of the classes. You did the work and wrote the exams and in the end got a grade. It's completely possible to teach a course without publishing a syllabus up front ;)
  16. I would start the course and see how much time it *actually * takes to master the material. The prof may just be trying to scare the students out of unreasonable expectations ( most students UNDERestimate how much time they need to put in). Try for a few weeks, then decide when they have a more realistic view of the work load.
  17. The rule of thumb I am familiar with is 2 hours out of class for every hour in class. So a 4 credit course should require on the order of 12 hours. But it is a fallacy to assume the grade to be proportional to time spent.
  18. Weird. Give the prof 24 hours, then ask again, if class is already in session. I would use both Canvas messaging and regular email. Is there any content on the Canvas page? Any work to do? ( there may not be a "syllabus" document, but there could be assignments) If there is no response from prof, ask Department chair.
  19. I'm usually fairly relaxed, but fish just spoils too quickly. Toss.
  20. With Skype out, you can call any phone.
  21. Breakfast: oatmeal with milk 2nd breakfast at school: whole-grain rye bread with cheese, apple lunch: potatoes and veggie and perhaps scrambled egg; once a week hamburger or brat; Saturdays veggie soup of pasta with tomato sauce; Sundays a roast or other cut of meat plus potatoes plus veg afternoon snack: roll with jam dinner: whole-grain rye bread with cheese; perhaps carrots or a salad The only produce available in my country in winter was potatoes, cabbages, carrots, apples, onions, leeks. Once or twice a season we were able to buy bananas and oranges, the amount rationed per family. I never saw bell peppers, broccoli, avocado, fennel, zucchini, squash, and many other veggies until I was in my 20s. They didn't exist.
  22. We did the math a few years ago, and using the Sodastream was way cheaper than buying bottled seltzer, even factoring in that we filter our tap water. Define worth it for us.
  23. I hate lunch meetings with a passion. It is an insidious way of undermining the lunch break, and it contributes to a culture that does not value food and mealtime. While eating, one should be able to focus on eating. DH has a lot of lunch meetings. And when the university feeds them, it's usually crappy pizza. Ugh.
