  1. Merit scholarships. Even a school that is test optional needs to evaluate the student's academic performance through some measures, usually a fuzzy "holistic" view of the application. A high SAT score is a good hard data point that can help.
  2. The bolded is what matters as it pertains to actual hygiene . They have clean dishes and clothes and have sanitary surfaces for food preparation. Baseboards and blinds and cobwebs on unused hinges are cosmetic. Are any of the things you notice an actual health or fire hazard? If not, leave them be. It simply may not be a priority for your mom because she has other, more pressing, concerns. Especially when your father is not well. ETA: I wouldn't call 70 y/o "old".
  3. Tried to message you but it says you can't receive. Mailbox full?
  4. The shoulder popping out raised a red flag for me: Has she been evaluated for Ehlers Danlos? Heavy painful periods are part of the symptoms.
  5. Two thoughts: 1. Marriage is no longer the only societally accepted form of long-term partnership. Many of the younger people who aren't married are still in long-term committed relationships. 2. Actually, in amny places historically, financial independence was often a *requirement* for a marriage license. You couldn't marry if you didn't have the means to support a family.
  6. Good point, and I agree it's two-fold: 1. Resource sharing is a huge help, especially when it comes to housing and childcare. Here's where being a couple *directly* confers a material advantage, and it's why single moms are so often in poverty. 2. There is a big overlap in the skills needed to form successful long-term relationships and and those to be successful in the workplace. Here, being part of a stable couple is an indicator for possessing a certain skillset that helps function in the world.
  7. You can always take down your tent, pack up, and leave your vehicle parked in a common area that isn't the actual campsite, and enjoy a full day of hiking, fishing, birding, picnicking or whatever else you do.
  8. Last international flight, I was required to check in at the desk even though I already had checked in online and had electronic boarding pass ( and print) and the agent printed me new ones at the desk.
  9. I always print a paper boarding pass for redundancy. Even when I have it electronically on my phone. Phones can die.
  10. That's a lot. I'm so sorry. Hope things turn for the better soon.
  11. Peri can take up to 13 years. Menopause is when you had no periods for one year. Then it's considered over. Peri is the time leading up to that point, characterized by hormone fluctuations, irregular periods, raging mood swings and psych symptoms and a lot of other unpleasantness.
  12. Aren't they often zoned so they cannot serve as a primary residence, or not equipped to handle four-season living, i.e. no adequate heat? Or so far from a place with employment opportunities? Because most jobs aren't in the woods where people have their fishing cabin.
  13. Do you realize that that is a problem? You cannot have a *genuine* relationship if you have to hide who you are and what you feel. You're faking a person you think you "should" be. Does your DH not deserve you to be honest and authentic?
  14. No. You can *write* absolutely what you want, without censoring yourself, without forcing yourself to be positive. You can write about anything. The hard stuff, the controversial stuff. You get to have an opinion. Maybe you need to learn to write without having the inner censor look over your shoulder, without aways keeping ab eye on publishing and what the audience may think. You have the luxury that you don't need to write to pay the bills. You get to write whatever you want.
  15. You know that screens interfere with that, right? The yoga and movie was just an example for the many things you could do.
  16. If the body doesn't produce alcohol dehydrogenase properly, it can't metabolize alcohol. I am unfit to drive after half a drink. My body doesn't process alcohol like other bodies.
  17. Watch a movie. Do yoga. Take a shower. Write an angry rant at the earth rotation that causes your jetlag. Or just give in and sleep. I just went through a 12 hour jetlag. Sometimes giving in and just sleeping is the best. Instead of imposing "shoulds" and "musts".
  18. works only if nobody replies to the other thread, because then it gets moved to the top again. But why not simply scroll past and be done? Why bother hiding a thread at all?
  19. I have several subscriptions. The cat litter will show up as scheduled, but the cat food has been listed as "temporarily unavailable" for a couple of weeks and won't be delivered. Never had issues before.
  20. That is not entirely correct. You can choose for each assignment whether it is based on points or percent. For point based assignments, you don’t need to define weights. Adding more assignments later in the course means more points will be available, and the grading scale will be affected accordingly, unless those assignments are set to count zero points.
  21. Keeping you in my thoughts and sending good vibes for clarity and peace
  22. I remember that I thought I would never retire and that I would teach for free if they let me. That was ten years ago. Now I am sick of the rubbish, too. During the pandemic I had daily rage-quitting fantasies. It's slightly better now, but once DH retires, I will, too.
  23. I think that's a fundamentally different situation from a person who spent those 25 years working the same job and is suffering from burnout. I have 20 years of energy in me, too, but I am sick of the continually increasing demands, the ridiculous time-wasting requirements that overshadow the actual part of my job that I like. When dh retires, he will finally be able to focus completely on his research, without committees, meetings, reports etc. He will get to do the *work* he loves, without the interference of the administrative tasks the *job* demands.
