  1. I need help finding a Literature/Writing program for an 8th grader (boy, who loves to read but misses details, and writes the least amount of information possible). I would love for it to be one program, and also have some kind of answer guide so that I have reasonable expectations. I'm honestly quite exhausted of trying to pull words out of him. :svengo: And, it would be wonderful if it wasn't ridiculously expensive. Is there anything like this? Thanks!!
  2. It's the worst. Liquid benadryl can help with some of the itching. I know that for each of my kids it meant that we were spending a week together on the couch (in misery). Hope he's feeling better soon!
  3. I suspect that my 13 year old may have dysgraphia. Is it worth it to have him tested at this point? From what I have read, the only thing you can do is 'accommodate the student' which I read as: expect handwriting to be messy, type as often as possible. If I did want to have him tested, where would I start?
  4. Yes. And then add early pre-menopausal hormones to the mix. We are pretty much just a dramatic freak show.
  5. Seriously. It's a huge issue in our culture today. We just started letting my son use a phone that has just about everything blocked except for imessaging. When he's allowed to use other stuff, we will put a filter on it. ETA: And we told him that we will be looking at it.
  6. No, moving is too hard for me. It takes way too long to really settle into a place, build community, and feel at home.
  7. We have used both. My kids had very little retention with GWG. I am a fan of CLE up until around 6th grade. 7th grade just became too intense and took up too much time for us.
  8. No suggestions here, but I'm ready to be done too. :svengo:
  9. I understand. However, I also know that my parents felt that they were just trying to 'help' me. They had good intentions. It is a slippery slope.
  10. This type of thinking is so harmful. Doing 'whatever you can' to get your child to lose weight can scar a person for life.
  11. Yup. My parents sent me twice. Honestly, at the time I thought it was fine, but now as an adult... No, just no. They saw me as a fat kid that needed to lose weight. In reality, I needed so much more. The camps did help me lose weight for a little while, but they did not help in any real, permanent way.
  12. I'm about to let my son (13) dive into The Hunger Games, and I would love to use it as a springboard for studying history and maybe literature. I would also love to use it as an opportunity for critical thinking and writing. Has anyone used a fantastic study that you would recommend? I know that there is a bunch of stuff online, but I would rather not have to wade through it all. Thanks!
  13. I'm sorry. We have been the ones who moved away and we have also had good friends move away on us. It is painful.
  14. I do! The teaching is SO good. I seriously sit in the front row because I feel like it's such a gift to be there.
  15. I participate in a study led by Jen Wilkin. She is a phenomenal teacher. Many of her studies and lessons are available free online: http://jenwilkin.podbean.com/
  16. Thank you, I ordered it this morning. I really hope it brings more peace to our school days.
  17. Has anyone ever used this as pre-algebra? I think I need to back up with my son. We use CLE and it is just moving too fast for him.
  18. Husband and I are trying to "get healthy." (Insert sarcastic 'yippee!') I'm using My Fitness Pal and counting calories. I *know* that this works for me if I stick with it. But, I feel like I'm dying. So, what are your tips? How do you stay full and feel satisfied? How do you fit in healthy fats? Also, I think I'm a hoarder with my calories. I want to make sure they last all day and so I save up more than half for dinner. My main concern (apart from feeling like I'm dying) is to find ways to make this a long term "healthy" habit - not an obsession, and not something I quit after a week and a half. Thanks!
  19. We are in North Texas (Dallas/Fort Worth) and it's not an area I would pick as a vacation spot. I have heard that the San Antonio area is nice. It would also be a nice time to go to Houston because it is not too hot yet.
  20. It is hard. It is so hard that I feel like I am in a constant state of being ready to quit. At this point our baby is 2, but I try to keep her entertained with countless episodes of Daniel Tiger, or toys dumped all over the floor, or having her be my buddy while the kids are getting work done. It is a constant, exhausting juggling act. :grouphug:
  21. Ugh, this is not what I wanted to hear. We are doing CLE 7 right now. From reading the reviews, I thought this pre-algebra would be a step back, a way to focus on just algebra, and preparation for moving into algebra 1.
