  1. :grouphug: Yes, they can do the hat, or a quick and cath and clean catch. Speaking from experience, when one is in that much pain - the hat isn't much more helpful. What they may do is try the hat, having you do it (I'm sorry, it's agonizing when you're in that much pain), and then if the catch is questionable, they'll do the cath and clean catch.
  2. I was going to say this, too. She'll learn quickly, when the need arises, and everyone will be very helpful while she learns. If she wants to learn beforehand, then find a group. Camping will be the easiest part for her to learn. Spoken by someone with lots of field work under her belt.
  3. We have a Brock Magiscope. It was recommended to us by the Happy Scientist. Great investment!!!
  4. We are wheat and dairy free, but we have other considerations (nut and seed allergies) and we do eat corn and soy - so some of this may work for you, some may not. We use Rudi's tortillas and breads. Those are my family's favorites. Udi's makes a decent roll (hot dog buns, hamburger buns, dinner rolls) but we rarely buy them. The kids like Udi's double chocolate and double vanilla muffins, too. Both Rudi's and Udi's are usually in the freezer section. For a butter substitute, we use Earth Balance. Milk substitute: we use coconut milk. Enjoy Life products are generally good, though we don't like all of them. Kinnikinick products as well. (We are addicted to their K-Toos, oreo substitute!) If you have a Wegman's nearby, some of their products are not bad, too. Gluten is very tricky, so definitely check out some lists - it can be in all kinds of things you'd never expect. Condiments especially!
  5. I have one like this, too. She will not eat meat, aside from the occasional pepperoni or sausage. We keep offering it, if we're having it, but I'm not overly worried about it. We are former vegetarians here, and our oldest was a vegetarian till he was 14. He's 22 now, and going strong. So I'm not in the camp that meat is essential, as long as we are watching nutrition in other ways and boosting other sources of proteins, etc. If meat consumption is a very important point for you, though, I'd keep trying different presentations, different meals, different textures until you find something he likes. That's been our approach with our picky girl, and once in a while she'll try a few bites of something.
  6. I would say it sounds significant as well.
  7. For some it does, but DS outgrew coconut allergies. Yay! However, I've yet to find a coconut flour that's not cross-contaminated with one of this other (many) allergens. Now I'm pondering crumbling safe cookies and making a sort of graham cracker style crust because you guys have me drooling over pie! :)
  8. Pizza. :blushing: I haven't yet mastered wheat free, dairy free, nut free pie crust. Oops. :leaving: We will be having the obligatory Vi Hart youtube marathon here, though!
  9. Excellent article, and thanks for sharing it! Love VSL #3!
  10. Love this approach! And, I forgot to say congratulations, too! Oops! Congrats to you and your family! What happy, wonderful news!
  11. :grouphug: The reception of our 3rd was less than stellar, so I hear you. Do it on the phone, do it quickly. Those are my thoughts, YMMV. On the phone, so you can make it a quick call, and oops, the brownies need to come out of the oven right now. And do it quickly so there's no complaining that you "never tell them anything." I *want* to agree with those who said wait to tell, or just don't. But I know how that would go over in my family. In fact, some of my family members are convinced that we knew about our 3rd for some time, and kept it from them. They simply do. not. believe. that her adoption was out of the blue and super fast. So not only are they judgmental and [insert whatever it is they feel], they are convinced that we kept something from them deliberately. She's almost 3, and they are still angry.
  12. Thanks, Wendy. Yes, I agree - keeping one's ovaries is preferable to instant menopause. You echoed my vague impression - that testing is iffy, and if one's having symptoms things are fairly advanced. [sigh] at least it is rare, even with family history. Ok, head back in sand now.
  13. I'm sorry about your mother. That's rough. :( What types of tests can they do to early detect ovarian cancer? ...I wonder this at times, as I don't think I'd have many (any?) warning signs - I have no uterus, no cervix, just ovaries. I guess no one really has signs though, right? Generally, I've taken the head-in-sand approach to this one... Okay, didn't mean to hijack in any way, shape, or form. Hopefully this is relevant, since it's related. :)
  14. I have one of these. It's difficult. I make sure he's well fed before school, and give him lots of warnings re: transition time. That helps. It feels a little silly, at his age, but I'm meeting him where I can, you know? Asthma - if he is having any asthma issues at all, the behavior is worse. Same with allergies, if they are flaring - his behavior does, too. Taking care of any physical issues proactively is most helpful for us. The other thing that's helped this year is vision therapy. I would never have guessed it, but addressing his vision issues has tremendously helped. That might not be an issue for every guy like this, but it sure helped mine. Good luck. Hopefully with maturity, and lots of patience from us, this will pass.
  15. This bears repeating. So, so true. Mmmmmmmmm...
  16. Walk Off the Earth. Ben Folds. Lily Allen. Those are my current favorites. DS is partial to Katy Perry. Oh, and Indigo Girls always make me smile. DH knows if I'm cranky, he should turn on Indigo Girls.
  17. I've had lots of pixies: I tend to go back and forth between mid length and chopping off to pixie length and everything in between. If you are a feminine girl, a pixie is not going to change that. Just be yourself. I don't always wear make up, and I mostly wear jeans and tees. No one ever thought I was a boy. :)
  18. No specific advice, just sending support! :grouphug:
  19. Hoping all is well! Maybe you're hiding out at Great Wolf Lodge, having a blast with the kids??? :)
  20. No. Not acceptable behavior, even if it's become the norm in your family recently. Put a stop to it.
  21. Don't forget to use the subscribe and save option. Someone already mentioned it, but it really is worthwhile. You'll save 5% no matter what, but if you have 5 items shipping on the same day you'll save 20%. I juggle our subscribe and save stuff around all the time, and always save the 20%.
