  1. Basil of Baker Street is one I have seen recommended often.
  2. We have been doing one lesson a step, once a week except when it took too long. We are going to add a second day with just the phrases and I am going to start dictating phonograms for him to write daily.
  3. We started today. My husband doesn't have holidays off so we don't always take off for them. School went well, we did everything I had planned even though I punctuated my reading with coughing fits. The usual attitude problem was present, but less than expected after a break.
  4. I don't know what classical education means to me. I found that what I read in TWTM resonated with me and it was the first thing I read about homeschooling or classical education. I have since read many other things. I have a preference for taking what works for me from a variety of things and putting something together piecemeal rather than ascribing to anything as is, but I am using many of the Peace Hill Press materials with my son. I know that he would be on target for math, ahead for reading, and behind for writing if I put him into public school. His biggest problems would be behavioral, he could catch up easily on academics if he wanted to. As far as content, you always have content. You just have to choose what content you want in your child's life or just accept whatever appeals to him from what crosses his path.
  5. I don't know, we actually bought this on CD many years ago. Some libraries have them, too. I think that Amazon and Audible are pushing the audible membership. Below that, it says you can buy it for $42.95.
  6. I haven't taught high school history yet, but my husband and I listened to a The Modern Scholar lecture set on ancient Rome that we liked. http://www.amazon.com/The-Modern-Scholar-History-Ancient/dp/B001EI3IX8
  7. My local high school was 7 classes/year before block scheduling and 8 classes/year after. The state requires 24 credits to graduate, so many people had more than the minimum upon graduation.
  8. I will be honest and tell you that OPGTR ended up being review for my son when we used it because he learned from online things. His favorite was Reading Eggs.
  9. I would probably use that as a day to do narration or copywork from a different subject.
  10. It doesn't work for me and I use Netscape Mozilla Firefox.
  11. The only foods I salted as a child were cantaloupe and hard boiled eggs. My family is not southern. My grandfather ate tomatoes with salt, pepper, and sugar.
  12. We loved it, but you should do what will work for your family and if you as the parent teacher don't want to do it, you probably won't love it. I think you should do world cultures and geography because it is what you want to do. The ancients will still be there next year.
  13. The good thing about buying a Disney poncho if you need it is they will replace it if it tears up. I would be less worried about rain in September, but it has been unusually rainy this summer.
  14. My son is ready to give it up, but we had offered it to someone local. She hasn't made arrangements to get it, so if he agrees, you are welcome to the tracks for the cost of shipping.
  15. My suggestion is don't apply shampoo to the length of the hair, just to the scalp, and then you need less conditioning.
  16. If you want to buy the bears, it doesn't matter if there are 6 colors rather than 4.
  17. The way it has worked for us is that I have a plan and then my son wants to learn about other things, too. We will be doing earth science and astronomy this year along with some chemistry and entomology. He wants to learn about rocks, space, and insects (we did lots of insects last year, too) and got some chemistry stuff he is excited about using.
  18. If you want activities and discussion questions with SOTW you need to get the accompanying activity book.
  19. Did they install the convertible seat at the newborn recline or more upright? I have heard that makes a difference for some babies.
  20. We use a variety of things. When my son is in the mood to use manipulatives, I get out whatever makes sense (we did Saxon K math and bought the manipulative set from RR). With single digit adding and subtracting, we might use counting bears or c-rods or the abacus. I like to use either the c-rods or the abacus when there are multiple digits. Take the graphic and use something to make it 3-D, marbles, toy cars, pencils, anything that you have enough of to do the math problems. We have a Judy clock for the time chapter and use real money for the money chapter. ETA: I would look at Right Start from what you are saying.
  21. My eyes aren't always the same color (blue, gray, two different shades of green). My son had blue eyes as a baby, they turned green for several years, and now they are usually brown but sometimes more green.
  22. I find that there are two schools of thought on public breastfeeding. Both are centered on the same topic, but one would be fine with itsy bitsy bikini tops if everything is attractive while the other thinks that even a low cut top shows too much. I want to have another baby just so I can breastfeed everywhere, without a cover, and talk loudly about what I am doing. But only because I am annoyed by these points of view.
  23. The events in the movie explain why Daniel is where he is at the beginning of the series, so that seems important to me. My DH says you must watch the movie first.
  24. I have given up on science curricula at this point. We use books from the library both to read for information and for activity ideas. DS also likes to watch science videos and nature documentaries. We have some chemistry kit things that he got for his birthday that we will be trying soon, too.
  25. I don't know why they took action on the account without a death certificate, but it is standard (federal) credit union rules that one person on the account is the member and the other person would need to open a new account rather than removing the primary.
