  1. I would love to see how this works. We use Phonics Road and if I could streamline it more that would be wonderful!!
  2. We got chickens for the first time last year. They are a so much fun!! Our nightly entertainment is hanging out in the evenings watching them play and peck around.
  3. I would look on Amazon for the 4th edition of WRTR. There is a set of the phonograms in the book, you would just need to copy them onto cardstock. Another good one is "Phonics for Reading: A Primer" by Bonnie Dettmer. It is Spalding based and has all of the student notebook pages in it for copying. They would both be very inexpensive to get started. A sewn composition book with 3/8" lines is good for beginners, too. The newer 5th edition of WRTR is entirely too scholarly and makes the whole process seem much more difficult than necessary, IMO. I use The Phonics Road to Spelling and Reading which is also a Spalding spin-off as well, but the price point is higher!
  4. It is more about teaching the parent how to create a wholesome learning environment for younger children. It is often on the for sale boards, so you could try it that way!!
  5. I have used a few things, but for my upcoming 2nd grader and every 2nd grader hereafter - we will use the Phonics Road to Spelling & Reading. Christian Liberty Press Nature Readers and Elson Readers book 2 as his literature selections. Of course, a lot of other books, too!
  6. If I remember right you can purchase the Literature Study & Student materials for it separately from the main program. You might email her and let her know that you are accelerating and see what she can do for you.
  7. Her series is the best way to learn about her method, but concise isn't a good word to describe it! LoL I like several of Sonya Shafer's books. They aren't based solely on her interpretation of CM methods, rather a compilation of what CM had to say about certain things. So, her "Hearing, Reading, Telling and Writing" book has tons of quotations from the CM Homeschooling series. The "Laying Down the Rails" has all of Cm 's thoughts on habit forming. Another good one to help you go through the series is Penny Gardner's study guide. Karen Andreola's book is great, but there is a lot of Karen's own opinions and it doesn't necessarily give the truest view of what a CM education is.
  8. I am using Phonics Road 1-3. My 1st grader is using Phonics Road as is with no supplementing at all. At least he is now, I tried to do a hodge podge over the last several months and it was just frustrating to both of us. And he lost some momentum that he had gained when I was focusing solely on PR. My 4th grader who is a struggling reader is in PR 2. The only other LA that I have him do is read everyday from the Elson Readers and answer the comprehension questions and do the worksheet. We practice his summarizing skills ala WWE through that. My 6th grader is in PR 3 and is taking IEW SWI-B at co-op. If she were a 4th grader doing level 3 - then I wouldn't supplement, but that isn't the case for her. To the OP - if you child is doing well with reading/writing *and* you have extra time on your hands to do IEW, then go for it. It isn't necessary since PR 2 will pick up on the writing skills, but if you have time, it won't hurt either. KWIM? Because I'm teaching so many - I have been required to drop a lot of my grand ideas of supplementing since it meant we weren't doing any one thing really well - just a lot of things poorly! ;) For my younger kids who will go through Phonics Road from the beginning and will finish PR 4 by 5th grade - they will all move into IEW TWSS with one of the themed books for middle school. lindsrae - can you share a bit about how you are using PR and what it is that is bugging you? Maybe we can help!
  9. The Old Schoolhouse Review Crew just reviewed AAR Level 1. They reviewed AAR Level pre-1 last year around this time.
  10.:lol::lol::lol: That is hilarious! I was cracking up reading the homeschooling and homebirthing ones. Enough my hubby had to come and see what I was laughing about. Sometimes - you just have to laugh - and not overthink it.....:D
  11. Throwing money hasn't worked in the past and it won't in the future unless there is a *HUGE* fundamental change in the way in which those monies are allocated in the public school system. I agree that budget cuts hurt - but that is because it seems like the administration and overhead of the school systems aren't touched but the money is cut in teacher's salaries, books and programs that help students such as art/music!
  12. Check your local library. Our library system has recently contracted with http://www.mangolanguages.com/ for free foreign language instruction for library members. If you find a program you like, but need more oral/speaking practice then this would fill that gap.
  13. Ack...decisions, decisions. My phone is about to drive me batty - it just doesn't work at. all. It glitches, freezes and I have to take the battery out at least once a day. I've done a hard reset at least a half dozen times since I bought it 6 months ago and it still just acts wonky. This is the second one I've had, too, the first one they replaced in the first 2 weeks because the microphone went out, so I couldn't make calls??! To save $$, I am hopeful that I can just get an iPad and take all of the apps off of my phone, perhaps then at least the phone part would end up working better!!
  14. I have an android phone and I strongly, strongly dislike it! I am able to take advantage of Best Buys Buy Back offer to put towards a new phone, but that means the iPhone would be about $400. So, should I buy the iPhone or should I just delete everything off of my terrible android phone and spend an extra $100 and get an iPad?! My hope is that the phone part of my android would work better if I took all of the apps off and then I would have all of the cool features of the iPad. Or...if I can swing it, should I get an iPhone and an iPad? Is it necessary to have both? Will I find having an iPad redundant if I have an iPhone, too?! Feel free to enable my gadget addiction!
  15. We have read it at least 3 times over the last couple of years as a read aloud and my older daughter and myself have read it a couple more times. It is one of the best Children's booklong time!!s I had read in a long time!!
  16. Yeah, from what I've heard and read - this isn't an isolated case. And in some cases these problems are known and have not been addressed, which is unfortunate!
  17. I used it but found it to jump around a lot - in ways that just didn't make sense at all. It seemed like the schedule was thrown together with the books, but there wasn't a lot of cohesive thought put into it. Another thing - WP is known for some serious shipping/customer service issues. I have a friend who waited for months before all of her books arrived. After getting them, she realized that there were some grievous errors in the maps and WP published books. Upon contacting the company she was informed that it was past their return policy and she was stuck - well, when it takes months to receive all the items, it doesn't make sense that the return policy is based on when the first item is shipped out. It makes it hard to determine if the program will work or not if all books are not in hand, KWIM?
  18. No, not nuts. If people so much as mention that their stomach hurts, we are out of there, washing hands and start taking Apple Cider Vinegar and Hydrated Bentonite Clay. The neighbor boy came over the other day and said "I threw up last night" - I was like - "I'm sorry, you can't play today, see you in a few days, buddy" and sent him on his way. His mom was a little bit disappointed since she thought it was just something he ate - I don't care - I'm not taking my chances!
  19. I am so blessed by my MIL - she's amazing! She is so generous, helpful and kind. She shares her opinion, but always out of love for her family. In nearly 15 years - she has loved me like her own and I am so grateful!
  20.:lol::lol: I loved Anna Karenina, but it took a bit for me to fall in love with it. It was sheer determination to finish it that kept me going the first half of the book and then all of a sudden I was hooked! I couldn't finish The Shack or The Red Tent. Just odd... I've never read Moby Dick, and it isn't because I haven't tried. The "third times a charm" didn't work for this book, nor has the 4th or 5th...I don't think I'll bother trying it again.
  21. They get so much better! The Long Winter reads much like a long winter feels - tedious, never-ending and at times hopeless! Farmer Boy is my favorite book in the series, but I can't read it without wanting to eat an entire apple pie and homemade donuts!
  22. We school 4 days, but we have co-op on Tuesdays - so they get history, science, music, art and PE there. So they school 5 days - I only teach on 4!
  23. Sometimes, you can't win for losing, huh?! It just stinks in this economy, degree or not. We are prayerful that his education will open more doors for him!
  24. My husband is going back to school right now for this very reason. He is gifted in many areas, always willing to work hard, a loyal employee who has a knack for video editing, graphic design, promotional materials etc. He's just a creative, crafty guy. Cut out for college right out of high school? Not so much, but he can't even *apply* for jobs that he has the skill set and experience to do because he doesn't have a piece of paper that says he has the skill set. It is frustrating to say the least.
  25. It is apparently way past my bedtime since I read the OP question as "Is there a Christian DEMON that believes this?" I have heard a lot of new things on this board, but that particular thing was going to be at the top of the list of hmmm.....
