  1. That is correct...always divide syllables between doubled consonants. Spel-ling. according to the Spalding method. Eta...wait a minute. Now I am confused, since that is adding a suffix to a base word. Ellie...where are you?
  2. I used SWI-A last year without the DVD's and it was just fine! I was actually relieved that I didn't have to try to figure all of the TWSs out. I think I would have been totally overwhelmed.
  3. Not anymore. You can check around on used curriculum sites. That is where I purchased mine!
  4. Hunter, I am fascinated by Professor B! The hand work does look tricky, but I think the same effect could be done with objects. The idea is too keep children from counting, much like is written in most vintage math texts. I think there is a thread "what do you wish you would have found earlier" that several people had used it and were happy with it...
  5. The BFG by Roald Dahl is one of our family favorites for laugh out loud funny. It was the book that changed the way we all viewed reading aloud!
  6. :iagree: Wee Folk Art guides are really great!
  7. Amen, sister! Honestly - it is *not* that difficult to run a paper cutter and laminating machine, if you take your time and pay attention to what you are doing! I can't tell you the number of times I have been shopping lately and had to wait on my "customer service" person to text on their phone, or discuss their lunch date with co-worker or what have you. It is crazy how little people regard doing a job and doing it well these days. I would ask for a replacement book or the equivalent in gift cards and stock up on my printer ink and paper!
  8. And they are huge, full color books on nice heavyweight paper. I am sure they aren't cheap to print!
  9. The TOS Review Crew just reviewed Mathematical Reasoning. http://homeschoolcrew.com/785039/ My daughter has really loved it and it has definitely required more analyzing and thinking on her part, which I like!
  10. Adam Andrew of the Circe Institute has a lot of info on literary analysis. No worksheets, just suggestions for you to help the children dig a bit deeper onto what they are reading. He writes monthly literature helps for SchoolhouseTeachers.com, this month he is studying Misty of Chiconteague. He discusses theme, setting and the use of literary devices. They are easy to pick up and start and really help you, the parent, discuss literature with your kids!
  11. *This* is what makes me frustrated with them. If you can't offer timely shipping, then don't offer to sell the books as a package! And then, if you have an upset customer don't ignore the emails, make it right and vow to do business better in the future. I just feel bad for the people who aren't able to research this online more and send money expecting an amazing program (they do have a beautiful catalog) and then run into the same problems that I hear other people talk about over and over again.
  12. I think a professional company taking 2 months (or in many cases longer) to get their product out to their customers is incredibly unreasonable. And the owners may be kind, sweet and grateful for patient customers, but that doesn't change the fact that there are glaring errors in many of their guides that they know about, have known about for quite some time and are *still* sending out flawed product. I totally get that they hired a crummy editor, but after you have customer, after customer, after customer pointing out errors, then as a reputable company it would behoove you to fix those errors and prevent further problems. Furthermore, their return policy isn't a return policy at all. I had a friend who didn't receive many of her items until well after the 30 day period had passed. Upon inspection, she realized the guides were riddled with mistakes and when she approached Winter Promise about the problem she was basically told "too bad, so sad the 30 day period had passed." That is terrible customer service. Using long shipping times to get out of ever having to offer a refund to an upset customer because they are past the 30 day return period, even if they haven't received all the items at that time, is just wrong. I am all for supporting small businesses and in many cases I offer a lot of grace for small mistakes and mishaps, but Winter Promise is way beyond small mistakes and mishaps at this point. They are still sending out guides that have errors that they have known about for over 3 years and haven't done anything about them. That isn't a mishap, that is knowingly defrauding their customers, IMO.
  13. It is free. My smartpoints are still in my account. I got The Magicians Nephew Boomerang issue!
  14. My friend's sister reformatted PLL into workbook format as well. The spaces are nice for copywork and dictation. She also has ILL reformatted. http://www.primarylanguagelessons.com/
  15. I am reading E.E. White's Primary Arithmetic right now. It talks about not allowing children to count at all. But holding up 1 object, then two, then three and so on. They begin to recognize groups without counting. Later, hold up two balls in one hand and 1 in the other - they should automatically recognize this as "3". I bought "Homeschooling Sanity" and she talks about using vintage texts. There are some real gems in it - and I have read a LOT of homeschooling books through the years! http://ladyofvirtue.blogspot.com/ - This is where you can find "Homeschooling Sanity" The method seems similar to Professor B, except using objects instead of fingers. Fascinating stuff, really. My grandfather can calculate enormous numbers in his head in seconds and he was taught using these same sort of vintage texts. I actually have my great-grandfather's math texts from 1912 (they have his name written in them!) and they are great!
  16. Ha! That is hilarious! I keep running across Crew mam's that I haven't met yet.... I have seen the OT and it is on par with the NT. We didn't end up using it because we are doing MFW Creation to Greeks. It has enough Bible, I didn't think we needed to do both!
  17. I just reviewed the GGC New Testament on my blog. I used it with all of my kiddo's!
  18. I use them! I hung up the timeline guide that is already printed and we reference it when we are doing our bible study, history studies or just chatting. The maps are pretty great, too!
  19. Each level has 10 DVD's. I have no idea how many hours are on each one!
  20. http://lcbcbooks.com/catalog/6 You can also find them for free on Google Books. And here is a detailed review from The Old Schoolhouse Magazine! http://thehomeschoolmagazine.com/Homeschool_Reviews/2974.php
  21. You don't need to add any extra writing to PR 1-PR 4. When I have emailed Mrs. Beers in the past, she mentioned that others used IEW as a writing program to go along with the Latin Road. The Bridge would be much the same - there isn't as much or any explicit writing instruction in the upper levels (Bridge through Latin Road 3.)
  22. Yesterdays Classics has Primer through 3 available in hardcopies or formatted for Kindle. I have the Kindle versions. I have the Elson Reader s, too. We have used parts of 2,3, and 5, I think. I really like having a book that the kids can read and then have a guide for with questions and activities.
  23. I used to use a bunch of expensive face products that all worked together - and I still had some skin problems. Dryness, itchy and if I missed one step in the regime then my skin went wonky. And everything was soooo crazy expensive! About 3 years ago I started using a basic, inexpensive face wash (Alba Botanica something or other), Thayer's Rose Witch Hazel as my toner and Aura Cacia's Rose Absolute oil in Jojoba Oil for my moisturizer. Rose oil is an excellent anti-aging oil and jojoba is great for moisture and balance. I never have flakiness, dryness, redness and my skin feels more fresh and supple. I put four drops of the Rose oil on my fingertips to put on my face. I seriously can *not* believe how much better my skin feels. I am pushing 40 (ack! how did that happen?!) and my skin looks better than it did in my early 30's.
