  6. Just thought I'd post a quick update on case someone finds this by searching in the future. I decided to not go with the Kolbe syllabus. I purchased the Miller-Levine macaw textbook in the iPad edition (love it, btw). I spent a lot of quality time with Google and found great, representative wet labs using mostly lab supplies we already own (we have a microscope, glassware, stains, prepared and unprepared slides, etc). I have also found really solid activities for genetics and evolution. Dd will be doing bio in a semester block. She will be covering all the chapters in the book with additional activities, doing 13 or 14 wet labs, writing lab reports, and taking six exams. I'll pull exam questions from other textbook websites (hopefully I'll get all the exams written this summer while she's away at language camp). (Second semester will be spent on AP Environmental Science, per her request.)
  7. 8. We've spent a lot of money on future vacation items this week----airfare and such. We received a concerned email from our visa provider  Other than that, dh bought lunch one day between client appointments. I bought a kindle book from an author I like to buy.
  9. Just back from the gym w dh--45 min on bike, some core work, some weights (had dh spot me :))
  10. I understand. I come at this from the viewpoint of someone who had two older kids go through private high school. All direct communication from teacher went through my student, unless I emailed the teacher. I am used to saying "hey, what's going on in X class?" and "can I see the rubric for Y assignment?" :) I do not have any direct communication from dd's other outsourced teacher from TPS. She is responsive to my emails, like when dd had a fever and would miss the live class, but that's been it. I was actually surprised to see so many teachers at PAHS say that parents would be receiving weekly emails. I guess they must have had a number of students not doing the work. But one of our requirements for dd to take an online class is for me to have all of her log-in information with links to the classes on my devices as well as her laptop :)
  11. Having a very late dinner now (homemade pizza :)) --exercise at gym w dh --school stuff (chem, math, history, APHG, some Science Olympiad things) --daily house stuff --continue w bio planning for next year (I am increasingly convinced I can do this on my own :)) --book dd's airfare --emails du jour --order more pointe shoes --research hotels in Seattle --discuss English choice for next year w dd --vote in the school district referendum --library for holds --groceries --dd ballet 5:30-7:30
  12. Curious---what Arabic are you using? BYU using Alif Baa and al-Kitaab?
  13. Actually, she did---in one of the weekly messages before the list of assignments. Sometime late in January? Or maybe the first week of February? I read the website every Monday morning while drinking my coffee :)
  14. Yep, there may have been a similar discussion in this house when I was going back-and-forth over AP Calc at home or outsourced!
  15. (I'm hoping you and Sailor Dude will do comparative instead of US so that I can learn from you :D Dd was talking about that course for her junior year.)
  16. My son used this edition of Miller's Living in the Environment http://www.amazon.com/Living-Environment-Principles-Connections-CengageNOW/dp/0495556718/ref=sr_1_7?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1424809088&sr=1-7&keywords=miller+living+in+the+environment at his school (there is at least one newer edition). Dd asked to do APES next year. I will be doing it on my own. I haven't yet chosen a textbook, but I've started reading various syllabi and teachers' websites for ideas :) Dd has been competing in and winning ecology- and environmental-related Science Olympiad events for years. I expect she'll find it to be an interesting yet not too challenging course.
  17. We'll be doing bio in a fall semester block next year. I have scheduled 13 wet labs for the 17 week period. Other topics will be rounded out with paper simulations (like for populations or natural selection) or virtual labs (non-plant dissections). We have something like 15 chem labs this year. Some take many, many hours.
  18. 30 min elliptical, upper body and core work It was 6F when we drove to the gym
