  1. That humidity level is what does it for me. Miserable. You have my commiseration. Unfortunately that's a normal August for where I live.
  2. The Instant Pot is a pressure cooker. My MIL has been raving about hers, so I went ahead and got one. My doggie made out like a bandit with a water fountain, car booster seat and new clippers. These were all things we had been looking at for her. I had to hold her back from the Sherpa pet carrier and the soft side kennel and have a talk about how we don't buy things just because they are on sale.
  3. I find Jello disturbing, weird, bouncy in a way food ought not to be, unless it is in a very thin layer in the aforementioned strawberry pretzel dessert, which I faithfully eat once a year on the Fourth of July. 10 layers of it? Shudder. Mixed with cottage cheese? That ain't right.
  4. I've never thought about it and will probably leave it that way. Not really into music. I did, however, in as much detail as possible and to the horror of my family, express my opinions about being shut up in an expensive box, embalming fluids, bugs, mouldering away, etc. I'm pretty sure I'll get the cremation I want. There were also threats of haunting.
  5. I didn't see some of my favorites mentioned. I really like Victoria and Albert Museum Museum of London The Wallace Collection I also have a great memory of the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace. My little one really got excited about it and said, "Look, mommy! It's a marching band. Can I join in?"
  6. After reading Cold Mountain and All the Pretty Little Horses around the same time period, I stopped reading popular fiction. Bleh. And then, to make movies out of them. Double bleh.
  7. My diet now has little resemblance to that of my childhood, which was dominated by hamburger and potatoes, and I rarely eat those these days. My mom thinks I'm strange in liking kale, hummus, sushi, miso, mango, curry and the list goes on.
  8. I like doing volunteer work or very part-time paid work outside of the home and expect to continue doing that. I guess I see all my work in the home as an awful lot of contributing even once my kids are gone. I like to do the outside things to be helpful and social.
  9. I adore snow, so shoveling wins hands down. I don't like grass and would love to turn our lawn into a zen garden.
  10. https://www.aatj.org/studyabroad/College-and-University-Programs-US Here's a link that might be useful to you. It's from the American Association of Teachers of Japanese. My daughter was born in Japan and would like to go back someday, possibly as a student.
  11. I hate being hungry. I would have eaten that. Sometimes school luncih was my best meal of the day. I learned to clean my plate -- choke down pickled beets and brown lettuce in salad -- so that I could get seconds. I watched the clock for lunchtime to finally come.
  12. We didn't find anything inappropriate in core f for 5 th grade, but I'm having a hard time equating that word with Sonlight so probably am not being helpful. I'm thinking Breaking Stalin's Nose and A Long Walk to Water might be heavy for some children? My dd was fine with them. She is sensitive to things but she is a warrior spirit, so she gets energized and wants to fight for what's right where other people (like me) might get weighed down. We loved Where the Mountain Meets the Moon.
  13. I've done core D+E twice now for fourth grade. Neither of my students had a problem with it, and I felt it was plenty of American history for the elementary level.
  14. Something we've done this year when she's in 7th grade is have conversations about what she thinks she would like high school to look like for her. We've talked about different careers she might like, different universities she might like, and what kind of high school studies those would require. We've also talked about picking a couple of her extracurriculars to go deeper with, and how she's going to have to make choices about her involvement in her sport.
  15. This made me LOL. Thanks for compiling it all. I'm new to the high school and college boards and that is exactly how it has sounded to me. Such a far cry from how I chose a college back in the day.
  16. I'm sorry. I understand. My husband does this, too. He can know the content, but his mind gets jumbled when faced with the test. He did eventually advance, but it was behind his peers and yes, that was very difficult for him. Sending good vibes.
  17. I move with the military, and yes, it is an adventure and I like it, but it still stinks. We take months to settle in and unlike you, we have the advantage of being easily able to connect with other military people who have a similar life. I know I'm getting used to the new place when months later I say, "you know the traffic around here really isn't as bad as it used to be." I've also learned that it's always going to take longer than I think it should to adjust.
