  1. FYI - Dr. Carol Reynolds, the author of Discovering Music, will be speaking at the Midwest Homeschool Convention again this year. And she will have a booth in the vendor hall, listed under "Professor Carol". That's where I first heard about "Discovering Music".
  2. Thanks for the suggestion. We already own HOAW, signed by Susan herself, and HOMW. If we don't use them as part of a history course, I'm sure ds will read them for fun. :001_smile:
  3. Hi April Would you mind sharing some information about the TOG virtual co-op? Is that through Tapestry of Grace, or another organization?
  4. My son has done robotics projects through 4-H. Our local extension office owns NXT kits that kids can borrow. You may have the same option in your area. It would be a very low-cost way to get involved with robotics. In our area, the 4-H season begins in February, so now would be the time to make some inquiries.
  5. Thanks for the information about the National History Day program. I had not heard of it before. It seems similar to the Living History project my ds did through 4-H. But NHD offers more options for sharing your research.
  6. I actually have TOG year 1, unit 1, sitting on my shelf right now. A friend loaned it to me to preview. I'm still debating if I want to stick with teaching history chronologically, or if we should switch to a more traditional approach, so that ds can take AP classes.
  7. Thanks Kim. I found the link to your Scribd syllabus on another thread. This would definitely be an option for us. And I already own several of these resources, which is always a plus.:D
  8. Thank you KarenAnne. I think you make some excellent points.
  9. Hi Cheryl Thanks for your response. I did look at TRISMS at our local convention, and thought it would not be a good fit for my ds. I don't think he would care for all the questionnaires. And it seemed to use excerpts of literature, rather than complete works. But those were just my initial impressions. Maybe there is more to TRISMS than I realize?
  10. If your child loved history, and was college-bound as a possible history major, which resources would you use for his high school history classes? Edited to add: My son knows quite a bit of history already. I am looking for something fairly rigorous and challenging for him, but that won't be too time-consuming for me to plan/teach/grade.
  11. Thanks so much for the help. I'm trying to lay out a tentative 4-year plan, for when my oldest starts high school next year, and I have a lot to learn. :001_huh:
  12. I've searched old threads, and so far have been unable to find an answer to this question. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me out with this. If someone takes AP US History in high school, do they also take a regular US History class first, or does the AP class replace regular American History? And, would AP Biology replace a regular Biology class, or would it replace Advanced Biology?
  13. Yikes! I'm dreading next year, when I'll have a 5th and 9th grader. But I thought it would get easier as they got older, and by the time they reached 7th and 11th, my load would be lighter. :glare:
  14. Lisa, do you mind if I ask who is offering the online course? I am interested in an online biology class for my son next year. Thanks!
  15. Happy birthday Mrs. Wise! Thank you for forging such a wonderful path, and for writing the guides we needed to follow along behind you! And thank you for your trips to Cincinnati, where you spoke words of encouragement to me, and countless others. May the coming year be filled with good health and great joy!
  16. I wouldn't worry at all. Her teeth will eventually come out, when the adult teeth underneath push them out of place. My oldest didn't lose his first tooth til he was 8, and he didn't lose most of his baby teeth until this past year (age 12). He still has one baby tooth left and he is 13 now. And all along, the orthodontist has assurred me this is normal.
  17. I had a lot of trouble remembering to take daily medication too. So I set an alarm on my cell phone to go off twice a day to remind me.
  18. I heard Lee Binz speak at our local convention last year, and she is a wealth of information on homeschooling high school, and preparing transcripts. Her web site is: www.thehomescholar.com
  19. I could have written your post almost exactly. Except my son is in 8th grade, and I did bite the bullet and purchased Analytical Grammar. I wish I would have done it sooner. I have been extremely pleased with AG. My son, who always struggled with grammar (could complete the GWG exercises but not apply what he "learned"), said he finally understands it, and is getting A's on all his tests. AG starts from the very beginning teaching the parts of speech, and then parsing and diagramming sentences. It is a complete grammar program, and once your child has finished the student book, they remove the exercises and have a grammar reference book to keep forever. So, think of it in terms of a long-term investment, and then the price doesn't seem so bad. :001_smile:
  20. :iagree: Me too. I try to have most of my shopping done before Thanksgiving.
  21. It has been my experience that SWB will give at least four sessions, so not all of those will be scheduled for the same time slots as MCT. If they do happen to be scheduled at the same time, go see MCT in person, because he tends to use powerpoint for his sessions, and the graphics don't translate well to a recording. Then buy the recording of SWB's session, and listen to it on the drive home. :001_smile:
  22. Registration opened today and the individual price is $25 and the family price is $40. But the prices are scheduled to go up $5 on November 18th. And they increase by $5 each month. Not sure if there is a shopping only pass or not.
