  1. A mom from my local homeschool group wrote some really helpful blog posts about attending conventions. I picked up some good tips, and I am a convention veteran. Here's the link: http://ourbusyhomeschool.blogspot.com/
  2. Last year the cd's at this convention sold for $6 each.
  3. I'm looking forward to Janice Campbell's session on Decoding the Classics: How to Read, Enjoy, and Teach Great Literature, because I am interested in her Excellence in Literature curriculum. I also want to hear Jeanne Fulbright's talk on Notebooking. And, of course, my top three must-see talks are all by SWB. I just wish one of them wasn't at 8:30 Saturday morning. :D
  4. 1. Warm, sunny days 2. Daffodils 3. Midwest Homeschool Convention in Cincinnati
  5. We don't even have the schedule for Cincinnati yet. I think the earliest you will see a schedule for Philly will be April.
  6. I'll be at the Midwest Homeschool Convention in Cincinnati.
  7. The Midwest Homeschooling convention is quite large, and I think it would be overwhelming for a new homeschooler. The vendor hall will be especially overwhelming. If your oldest will be a kindergartner in the fall, I would definitely not go. I think you would be better off to get your feet wet, figure out what types of curricula do and don't work for your family, and then come to the convention in a year or two. If you will be homeschooling for the first time because you are pulling kids out of school, especially if you have kids at the junior high or high school level, then I would say come to Cincinnati. You would benefit from the information you'll find there.
  8. :iagree: 100% When we went through this a year ago, I was surprised by who was, and was not there for us. Some people, who were casual acquaintances, really reached out to us, and that was greatly appreciated. And one thing I would add - keep asking the person how they are doing, even months after their loved one has passed. Grief is a long process, and it is comforting to know others are continuing to think of you.
  9. I think I am going to buy the DVDs. Amazon has the original UK edition for $16.99.
  10. What was Mary thinking? I bet next season she will decide to go to Matthew and tell him everything, only it will be too late, because he will have enlisted and gone off to war. And then when he comes back, Mary will be engaged to Evelyn Napier.
  11. I'm curious to know this too, because I would also love for my husband to hear this session. But I'm guessing that the Q&A format would make it challenging to record.
  12. I think so too! It's just that if she is old enough to play the mother of grown children, then that means I must be old enough to be the mother of grown children. And I prefer to think of myself as far too young for that! ;)
  13. I love Mr. Carson's voice too. I think he sounds a little like James Earl Jones.
  14. Me too. I didn't realize this was still going on in 1913.
  15. I just realized that tomorrow night's episode is the last. I thought the show was going to be on for months, and I am so disappointed.:glare:
  16. The Beach Club. The pool is like a water park, and there is a cute little ice cream shop. Also, the boardwalk area is nearby, as is Epcot World showcase, for your date nights.
  17. I love the show too. But I don't know anyone else who is watching it, so I am glad to have you all to discuss it with me. :001_smile: I like Cora too, but I keep looking at Elizabeth McGovern and wondering, when did she get so old? I guess it is because I haven't seen her in any movies for a long time. I'm hoping that Mr. Crowley gives up on Mary, and marries Sybil instead.
  18. I vote for any session that relates to teaching high school. I also like your session on "Teaching Students to Learn Independently", and would gladly hear that one again. Thanks for asking.
  19. They recently posted some of her topics on facebook, and they were the old stand-bys I have heard multiple times. I'm still hoping she will give her talk on Preparing for College, for those of us who aren't new to classical education, and have been faithful attendees of the convention. Here are her topics so far: 1) Homeschooling the Second Time 2) The Joy of Classical Education: An Introduction to Classical Education at Home 3) Educating Our Own Minds: How to Teach Ourselves as we Teach Our Kids 4) The Well-Trained Mind: Academic Excellence through Classical Education, Grades 5-8 These are all great sessions. I enjoyed them, and own several of the recordings. It's just that between Cincinnati and HEAV, I have heard each of these at least twice. So I would LOVE it if she would present at least one session that has NOT been presented in Cincinnati before.
