  1. So are you saying this is a pattern of behavior for him? Everything you said points to a disturbed, and persistent individual. I don't think her changing dorm rooms will deter him. Can she leave campus right now and finish the semester from home? Please do read Gavin deBecker's book "The Gift of Fear". And trust your gut. Don't tell yourself you are over-reacting and talk yourself out of your gut instincts. If your gut tells you your daughter is in danger, she probably is. Act accordingly. :grouphug:
  2. Yes, you can order them from Rhino Technologies at www.rhino-technologies.com. All though, the last time I looked, they had not added this year's sessions to their web site yet. And some sessions were "on site only", so you can't buy those.
  3. Since they are moving the convention dates up next year, I think it will be before opening day. Therefore, no Reds conflict. :D
  4. That talk is one of my favorites. I've heard it at least three times, and keep going back for more. :D
  5. :iagree: There were way too many kids in the vendor hall. And Rhino Technologies needs to hire more help, or not work this convention. Two cash registers, to serve thousands of customers, is not nearly enough.
  6. I have heard both of them speak (Pudewa on multiple occasions, including at 8:30 this morning!) and have enjoyed their talks very much. Vendor halls are great, but I appreciate the encouraging words of the speakers. It's how I recharge my batteries for the next school year. :001_smile:
  7. Thanks for sharing this Erin. Good to know. I hope though, that all my favorite vendors and speakers will still come to Cincinnati next year. (And a side note - I'm so impressed that I received an email saying my Analytical Grammar order has already shipped! I just purchased it Thursday night. You all aren't even home yet.) :001_smile:
  8. I have been attending the convention the last three days and had a great time. I heard from several sources ( hotel manager and vendors) that the convention had doubled in attendance from last year, and it certainly felt that way. The hallways and the vendor hall were crowded, but not to the extent that I wanted to leave. Some speaker sessions were crowded, with standing room only. But other sesions did have a number of empty seats. I think it is hard for the convention organizers to predict exactly how many people will be interested in hearing a given speaker session. They estimate numbers, and mostly get it right. I have attended all four years, and each year the convention gets better. There have been some growing pains, but they made many improvements over last year, and I am sure will make even more improvements next year. :001_smile:
  9. Thanks for the excellent post Vicki! We also didn't like Vocab From Classical Roots, and I need a new option for next year. I'll check out your suggestions at our upcoming convention. :001_smile:
  10. Wow! You guys are really on the ball. I am just starting to plan for next year, and will do most of my purchasing next month at the Midwest Homeschool Convention. But I am excited for next year, even though I don't know what we are doing yet.
  11. I haven't heard this idea before, but I really like it. If ds is still struggling by the end of algebra 1, he can just take it again in 9th grade. Thanks!
  12. I should have been more clear in my original post. My son will be 13 in May, and will start 8th grade in the fall, so he will be 13 when he studies algebra 1. In my junior high, anyone who was going to college took algebra 1 in 8th grade. That was the college prep math sequence. I think that is still common practice today, at least where I live, but I should probably ask around. Thanks for your post. :001_smile:
  13. I'm new to high school planning too, but so far have found "College-Prep Homeschooling" by David and Chandra Byers to be helpful. :001_smile:
  14. So, with Hands-On Equations, would I just need the "Learning System" for $34.95, or the "Home Packet" for $125?
  15. Lori, did you use the manipulatives with MUS, or were the visuals on the videos enough for your concrete thinker?
  16. Thanks for all the great suggestions. I'm hoping I can preview most of these curriculums at our homeschool convention next month.
  17. Which is the best algebra 1 curriculum for a concrete thinker? Ds12 is just not an abstract thinker at all. And he struggles with math. He is not (at this point in time) headed into a mathy career field, but he will be going to a four year college, so I do want him to take algebra 1 in 8th grade. TIA,
  18. If I had a nickel for every time my mii was rolled flat by one of those logs, I could buy myself a Chipotle burrito. :D I stink at most of the games, except for the fish catching one. For some reason I am really good at catching fish while dressed as a penguin!
  19. Even my husband noticed how hideous Tom's outfit was!
  20. Yes. Ds12 has participated for two years now. What would you like to know?
  21. I don't regret my bachelor's or my master's degree. My quality of life is better because of the education I received. It's not just about job opportunities.
  22. I was just diagnosed with fibroids, and was surprised to learn that 80% of women have them by age 50. But most people have few to no symptoms, so they don't even know they have them. Mine were found with a pelvic ultrasound. And the tech told me right away that they were fibroids and not tumors. The two look very different on an ultrasound. :grouphug:
