  1. There is a horse gene and I have it and my dd10 has it. No one else in our family has it.:glare: Therefore I gaze longingly at every horse I pass and wonder how I could make it work on my 1/3 acre:lol:. My first horse was a QHX, then I had a registered QH mare....I will never own a mare again;). Then I had two great Thoroughbreds, off the track, taught them to jump and went all the way up to "A" level shows in Junior Hunters and Amateur-Owner Hunters. I sold them before moving out here for vet school. I exercised racehorses when I was in school and I was a horse vet the first five years I was out. Since dc I am a horse vet who only works on dogs and cats:glare::glare::glare:. Now I get to pet a horse once a week at my dd riding lesson.:001_smile:
  2. Sanctioned, like set apart or considered holy? I have to respectfully disagree. Sovereign over but not sanctioned. God obviously knew the choices Abraham and Jacob would make and the resulting consequences. Sin has consequences...I know because I live it....we all do in some way. Abraham was promised a son and instead of waiting on God's perfect timing he and Sarah took matters into their own hands by having him sleep with Hagar. Look at the result, Ishmael. A great nation according to God but also a people who would always be at enmity with those around them. We see that even to this day. As for Jacob he was tricked by Laban into marrying Leah, not that it should let him off the hook for then marrying the sister he truly loved, Rachel, but God caused her to be barren for a long time because of this and then she dies in childbirth with the second one. Joseph grows up the envy of his brothers because his dad plays favorites and family strife reigns in this household. Jacob's polygamy resulted in one of the most famous dysfunctional families of all time. Did God know every detail, orchestrate our sinful ways for His Glory and remain in control over it all yes? But to say He sanctioned it, to ignore the obvious sin in each of these stories, God would not sanction sin.
  3. Can I just send my dd10 to you for the summer? She has my horse gene;).
  4. You could try putting an E collar on her (Elizabethan collar, like dogs wear to keep from chewing on stitches or a bandage) but you'll have to make sure she can still eat and drink water with it on when you are not there. If you sprayed bitter apple on her udder that may deter her as well.
  5. Could be pseudopregnancy. The only way to absolutely know for sure is do an ultrasound. Prostaglandin might bring her out of it, but if she IS pregnant you will lose the kids. Hydrometra (fluid filled uterus) may also be associated with pseudopregnancy so another reason to give prostaglandin after an ultrasound. If her udder is cool and non-painful it is not mastitis. 6. I watched the debate on HR2454 on CSPAN for over 2 hours on Friday. Horrible bill and what Dirtroad reported is just the tip of the iceberg. Thankfully there is supposedly a criminal investigation(heard it on the radio) that is going to happen of the EPA burying research that refutes their theory of carbon emissions having an effect on climate....so the fat lady hasn't sung on this one yet. And if that doesn't pan out it better die in the Senate. Call your Senators now!!
  7. I would not board a young puppy even at a vet clinic. Her immune system is not ready to handle the plethora of bugs going through that place or any boarding facility. A friend's home is the best option, IMO. I wouldn't worry as much about retraining after 9 days, I would be more concerned with her getting necessary attention and whether she will pick something infectious.
  8. Keeping his eyes lubed may help with artificial tears. Otherwise it sounds like surgery would be the way to go for him.
  9. They may not have been too tight but I can guarantee she probably paid way too much for them!:lol::lol: I like your avatar too, Hillary!
  10. Entropion is a condition in which either the upper or lower lids curve inward and irritate the cornea. Are we talking about the same thing? It is usually persistent and often times from a young age, unless the animal has lost a serious amount of weight leaving very little fat behind the eye and the eye sinks in resulting in the lids curling in. Are we talking about the same thing?
  11. Thanks, Heather, now I've wasted a few minutes watching Tim Hawkins videos! Did you hear him sing "Chik-Fil-A" to "Yesterday"?
  12. I love this idea but I keep seeing the client bringing in the box with a too fat cat stuck in the too small hole . I second the higher protein, less carb diet. The move in the veterinary community is to get more cats on moist meat diets. Dry foods are needed for some specific conditions but other than that they are mostly Lucky Charms for cats, IYKWIM. Your fatcat is definitely a diabetic in waiting. I would cut his caloric intake back by 25% for starters and give him more exercise. The skinny one needs to be shut in the bathroom or somewhere with a snack everyday. If they are males, choose food that says it has urinary acidifiers or "protects the urinary tract".
  13. Really, entropion in a cat? I don't know if I have ever seen one with entropion. Are his corneas already damaged? The surgery is definitely the best way if that is what he has. Otherwise maintaining good lubrication in the eyes with artificial tear ointment may be the way to go. Because entropion is an anatomical aberration, correcting the condition surgically is the only cure. If you decide to try artificial tears (you can get them at Walgreens or any pharmacy OTC) go with 3 or 4 times a day to start and see if his eyes look less irritated. If he has corneal damage, like ulceration, he may need other eye meds as well.
  14. If you have time to read HR2454 the Waxman-Markey Energy Bill you can try to do that (932 pages) before calling. I'm on page 50 (that only took 20 minutes...no I am not the speed reader they hired:lol:) I keep hearing this bill is going to be crammed through the House on Friday. Heritage.org has a lot of info on this including percentages of increases in our energy bills over the next decade if we let them pass this wildly irresponsible legislation based on what is proving to be more and more junk science. (That is my opinion based on what I read and know and I'm not debating that here) If this fries you like it does me then call your Representative now. The powers that be are trying to distract us with the healthcare reform debate, but cap and trade is already written and about to become law unless we speak out against it. My Rep's office said they were getting tons of calls on this.
  15. I had something like this happen with Ortega taco shells. The box was half used and open and little tiny yellow (like the color of the shells) bugs were crawling all over and then they got into the Club crackers!! I no longer put anything in cardboard back on the pantry shelf without being in a ziplock and I don't buy those shells anymore!! What were those??
  16. Two Septembers ago we stayed at the Embassy Suites in Chevy Chase, Maryland. They have great suites with a hot cooked to order breakfast included and a decent pool. The Metro is under the hotel (Friendship Heights station). It was about a 15 min. ride to downtown. We paid $179 a night but there might be package deals and advance purchase options online.
  17. Yes, I used the AG as well but didn't do all the crafts. My dc loved to color while I read. One caution with Biblioplan and young elementary age. If you try to everything you may burn out your dc or yourself. I had a couple of friends who tried to do it all and ended up hating it. I did as much of the reading as possible and the maps but stayed away from keeping a timeline the first cycle through ( I've done all four years of Biblioplan and SOTW now). So now as I begin the second cycle, my oldest dd will be keeping a timeline and doing additional outlining, reading and writing.
  18. My favorites for Ancients with elementary: Victor Journey Through the Bible (Beers) Moses' Ark (out of print but if you can find it, very good) What Really Happened to the Dinosaurs? Classical Kids (Laurie Carlson) The Librarian Who Measured the Earth (Lasky) Any of the Brian Wildsmith books (Moses, Exodus, Joseph, etc.) Pharoahs of Ancient Egypt (Payne) D'Aulaire's Greek Myths (my kids love this one for some reason) Any books by Rosemary Sutcliff
  19. I went to UCONN for undergrad and did some really cool (cutting edge at the time mid-80's) research in Lymes Disease. My roommate went on to do a PhD at Harvard in Biochem, where she still is (I think) and I went on to veterinary school. You don't need to do anything in high school beyond the standard bio, chem, physics, and maybe a special interest or agricultural class especially if he is interested in genetic engineering. Once he is in college he will have plenty of biochem, genetics, molecular bio, etc. to fill his time. Getting a research position in undergrad will give him some exposure to research in general. Sometimes going to an undergrad that has a medical school or vet school will have more opportunities for undergrads to work in more specialized departments. And don't rule out the midwest for medical research. Minnesota is one of the best states for medical research and biomedical device companies, not to mention the Mayo Clinic.
  20. We will definitely NOT be getting an H1N1 vax. Someone just remarked to me recently they thought more people died from the swine flu vac in 1976 than the swine flu itself but I have not had time to research that. Also, I would be very curious to see a side-by-side comparison of # of deaths from swine flu vs. # of deaths from influenza A during the same time period. I think flu A would be much higher.
  21. I don't know why algebra is important, but I do know that our dc will have to pass algebra in order to take higher level math course if they want to be engineers, doctors, vets, etc. I had calculus more than once and I will still be learning algebra all over again right along with my dc, because I have pretty much forgotten it all. I use a calculator at work if I have to do any math and that is usually just dosing patients. I'm sure someone has a better answer for you!!
  22. I agree with the other posters. I've used 2, 3, 4, and 5. R&S5 was really substantial, IMO and 6 is looking daunting! Err on the side of not overwhelming your dc if they have not had formal grammar yet.
  23. Just one more example of the appalling lack of common sense today.
  24. With the kids: Henty's Cat of Bubastes For myself: Thomas Sowell's Basic Economics, Levin's Liberty and Tyranny, Clousen's 5,000 Year Leap and Rand's Atlas Shrugged
  25. I think the previous poster (fleameds) may be breaking board rules? Anyway, make sure you rebomb everything 3 weeks after the first time or you will have flea eggs hatching out all over again.
