  1. I didn't read all the pages in that thread so maybe this was addressed but I didn't want to hijack it either. Does anyone plan on taking in their parents when they are unable to care for themselves adequately? I just figured as long as I am in good health, I will care for my mom and my in-laws if needed in our home.
  2. We'll be doing a lot of what has already been mentioned...Famous Men, Victor Journey through the Bible, the literature selections, but also the Cultural Atlases for Young People: Rome, Greece, Egypt. We are following Biblioplan Ancients which includes SOTW1 and I'll have my eldest do more outlining this time around.
  3. We have many clients that use 1-800-Pet-Meds without a problem. Whatever you do, don't switch to a Hartz product or some cheap Walmart substitute, it will either end up costing you more because it won't be as effective or it will make your cat or dog sick.
  4. David Noebel's book Understanding the Times may be a helpful resource for you. I would define what a Biblical worldview is and share the other main worldviews out there competing for the mind and hearts of kids today. Great resources at Summit.org
  5. Maybe you could jump into the subject first before they get their comments in. When you get to the park go running up to your friend and say something like "You won't believe what a great time we had learning about (fill in the blank) this morning" and "oh , the joys of homeschooling I just cannot count, they are beyond number" OK, too much maybe. How about having a running list in your head of the positive points about homeschooling and then you can rattle that off at every turn and they will eventually give up and leave you alone.
  6. I read somewhere (yes, read, not watched;)) that there are connections made in the brain through the act of turning pages and writing with a pen or pencil (not typing or watching a screen or listening through an ipod). I think the loss of learning will be bigger than they think by going digital. I was hoping the OP was going to announce that Arnhold was ditching textbooks for real literature and primary source material....then I would have applauded!
  7. Hi Tracy, Pigs are very sensitive to salt loss and bicarb loss which can happen with scours, so her electrolytes are probably screwed up leaving her with weakness and a strange gait. That is why gatorade works. If you are willing to have the vet see her I would especially if it is a mixed animal practice where they may give you a break on a piglet. The trouble with tubing in such a little one is going down the wrong tube! Cows are easy but pigs are not so easy, not as tough as horses, but not as easy. Trying different flavor gatorades may help too if she will bottle those. It takes 1-2 weeks for the gut to repair itself from severe scours like parvo, crypto, E.coli, salmonella, and whatever else pigs get that I can't remember off the top of my head, so be prepared to supplement her with electrolytes while her poop is abnormal. A vet could check a fecal on her too and I would talk to the people you got her from to see if the "know what is on their place" that she could have contracted.
  8. I think he must've thrown me and I landed on my head causing temporary blindness because I could hear him walking, but all I could see was black! Either that or I was riding him on a very.dark.night.
  9. My dc are 10,8, and 6. What is THE best beach for swimming, fun waves, good sand? Preferably between San Diego and LA, because then we are heading inland to hit Sequoia before we get to San Francisco later.
  10. We're heading there the third week of August. Paradise Point looks great but it is 3x what I can spend.
  11. Thanks for posting the link. I think the answer is C. 20 meters. In that example from the test I noticed the math graduation test is "embedded" in the MCA-II, whatever that means. I'm interpreting that to mean that there are certain portions of the test that must be passed in order to have graduated previously.
  12. Do you have any Ethiopians in your area? We have a large Oromo people group here in the Twin Cities and I teach ESL to them and Somalis. Talking with people from Ethiopia would be a great education in and of itself.
  13. We are flying into San Diego and out of San Fran in August (got cheap flights) and I'm looking for good package deals or must see type of ideas. Anyone out there with ideas or websites?
  14. In Minnesota, 11th graders have to pass a basic math skills test in order to graduate....until now. The new rule says they have to pass the test once or....wait for it.....fail it three times in order to graduate.:confused::confused: Our governor actually signed off on this and it was reported by news anchors on all the major stations with a straight face. It strikes me as a ridiculous attempt to increase graduation rates. What kind of message does this pass on to kids? Thoughts?
  15. Wow, just wow. That English teacher cannot write well at all.:lol::lol:
  16. You have it right. The old way was that 87 was a remedial course and the expedited course was 76 to Algebra 1/2 to Algebra 1. NOW the natural progression is 76 to 87 to Algebra 1. Algebra 1/2 is for extra reinforcement for those students not yet ready to tackle Algebra 1. This is according to the Saxon guy I talked with this spring.
  17. Biblioplan schedules SOTW 2, Kingfisher, Usborne, and others (Rats, Bulls, and Flying Machines) etc, for you. The Reformation section (6 weeks) is particularly well done with lots of literary selections.
  18. I have a rebel that age. No real advice here but Kathleen in VA posted a great article one time called "homeschooling the rebel". Maybe you could pm her.
  19. Thank you so much for the info, Margaret and others! I am going to look into all this. He doesn't sleep with a jet under his pillow but thousands of Legos are currently tied in an 8 foot long aircraft carrier that he built from a picture. Margaret, did you homeschool your dd at USNA the whole way through? We are doing Little League and Scouts and he helps me with the Somalis and we go to a nursing home regularly so hopefully that will help our extracurricular activities.
  20. OK, laugh if you want to, my ds is only 8 but.....I really think he might end up going to a military college of some sort and probably Navy. It is all his idea, I'm not steering him in this direction and I am not discouraging it either. So what does the Hive know about USNA? Anyone with experience?
  21. Oh, I don't know...the Fairness Doctrine or maybe current "hate crimes" legislation being considered, I think it is Senate Bill S909. It is a slippery slope to First Amendment violations, IMO.
