anyone want to chat about...
SonshineLearner replied to wapiti's topic in The Learning Challenges Board
Who would I want to take my child to for diagnosis in regard to issues such as these? It's not really a naturopath, right??? Confused..... -
So, My son is accelerated in Math, behind in Writing... and has ADHD. He's in school now, so I'm trying to figure out how much I want to push for an IEP instead of just a 504 plan.... And how much help he needs. He's going into 6th grade, and his attention span is somewhat short, even with meds. His behavior needs help, too. UGH!!! I didn't realize how hard this would be... Anyone have suggestions? Feel free to pm me...

I think it's great! The banner ad at the bottom, would be perfect for ads, too. I don't think it'd detract from the site. It could be half width, with yours remaining say... on the left... and the other on the right.... I bet you could totally get everything paid for... and we'd be just as happy! :) -
http://www.singnlearn.com/ Bonus... I know them. Nice family... 2nd generation homeschoolers..... :)

Equal Access policy at your local PS?

Weird... Bummer! We have access to all sports (Choir I believe... Band for sure) In your school zone.... We have classes depending on the High school's cooperation as well as available spots. Even the high school students don't necessarily get into foreign language classes their Freshman Year because of space. -

Grade 6 ~ Online Writing Program ~

Pop!!! Anyone use Online Writing Classes? -
So this thread keeps popping up!!! :) I started CC in our area, and it's still going strong.... I think the leadership stinks :( I wouldn't put my child back in the program, because of disagreements with it... but... even though the memory work isn't perfect.... We listen to it at home. Do I wish they had used Master Reviewers of each subject? Yup! I think they should have had at least 2 reviewers for each subject. I think they also should have offered free revisions for people, instead of making money for their (own) mistakes... I totally believe in Master Teachers for students at the Junior High/High school levels because of seeing CC. We also.... listen to the memory work during the week. He's in Public School, but it's just a bit of Memory Work "Sprinkles" in his knowledge bank. I also have us review the Andrew Pudewa Poems :)

Is there a 6th grade planning thread
SonshineLearner replied to momto2Cs's topic in Logic Stage & Middle Grade Challenges
We're looking at being home again next year. My son will be 11 years old. Oregon has a Math series that's online.. We'll do that for his Math (with my husband) He'll be going through that as my son is able... (Basically Algebra) Writing (I'm looking for an online class) Latin: I have many programs. Thinking of the Latin For Children Wordly Wise History and Science, I'm still deciding. He's listened to SOTW many times and has absorbed so much... trying to decide what we should do for 6th. Excited to look through the thread and see what others are doing :) -
I'm planning to homeschool again, after taking a break. I was really relaxed until last year, and was looking forward to the school giving him a kickstart in writing... Boooooo, didn't happen :( So, now I'm thinking of having him do an online course. I've looked around, and would love to hear some personal success stories of writing classes, that your children took online. Thanks!

Level with me about virtual schools.
SonshineLearner replied to AMDG's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Is it short term stressful? Or is it long term stressful? If it was short term... say 2 years... and you want to homeschool, I'd pull him. I'd do something like... 1 page of writing http://www.time4learning.com/ for maybe math and something like that listen to history... (Story of the World) Play Science... Enjoy life.... Play, Play, Play If your home is basically peaceful... I think this would be fine :) -
Handwriting without Tears... Honestly... best ever... I think they have a 2nd grade one now... I ordered 3rd grade and got paper to go with it. A couple of packages.. and journals... You won't regret it... (I don't think :))

Which SotW Activity Book is your favorite?
SonshineLearner replied to poiema's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I think they're worth it just for reference. I guess I'm easy to impress :) I actually have all of the books spirally bound and even though my son will be in 6th next year, I can't part with them. He still loves to listen to the cds, and I like to be able to pull out the books and look through options (Both the SOTW books and Teacher's book) I don't buy any tests, for any curriculum. We do mastery :) -
You can get it on some of the Mark Twain books on audio... free, but since we don't use the word "n*gger" and he hadn't heard it before, he incorporated it into his vocabulary and was interested in the word for some reason. I hadn't really gone and listened to it since I was a child and read the books (More than once) Different upbringings. I actually was one of 2 kids in the "black" public school that our house was part of, location wise. I knew that the word wasn't to be used, and wasn't bothered. We had such a problem, I put it up..... It's just not nice to hear your child say from memory, passages of work with the word "n*gger" in them. Maybe it wouldn't be a problem, if he hadn't memorized sayings and paragraphs with the words..... (He can memorize paragraphs easily) The books are really cool, just with that they had word choices that were agreeable and kind, by our thinking.

I can tell you that CC does not like to be showed their wrongs. Seriously, they aren't really humble, and they don't take care to be kind to their people. You're good while you're serving them. There was a sentence that was actually incorrect, that I advised them about, that I was to have our campus learn incorrectly. They were going to "review it" prior to the next time they published. The problem was not subjective; it was an incorrect fact. Oops.... Nope, they're a business that enjoys the profits of employees that are classified as independent contractors. Some day they'll be busted. I'm surprised that they haven't been, yet. So, whoever is reviewing these posts.... Yup.... That's my take....
