  1. I'm planning to do some of Song School Latin with my 8 and 5 year olds as part of morning time, but not have them do the workbook. I haven't figured out exactly how this will work yet, but I already have the CD from my older child and I bought the flash card set for us to play games etc. For 9th and 6th graders, what about Visual Latin DVD's?
  2. I use the DayTimer Family Plus planner - it's only $15 at Walmart.
  3. Thank you, that is good to know! (and I think my math plans are solidified - whew)
  4. Just wanting to clarify this - you are saying to go from SM5 to AoPS pre-algebra?
  5. I prefer the Prufrock Press books as well. We also play a lot of logic games.
  6. I used level A with my 4.5 year old last year and it worked very well. You can go as slow or fast as you like with it. Another bonus is that I was doing level B with another child and they could do the card games etc together. He picked up a lot just being in the same room when I taught the level B lessons too.
  7. I think with my 5th grader we are also just going to study vocabulary and have her keep a spelling notebook.
  8. Thanks everyone! I think I will wait and see how long it takes her to progress to the end of MM 6 and decide if she's ready to tackle AoPS at that point. We already own MM 7 so that was why I was considering it. :-)
  9. Do you see any disadvantages to doing MM prealgebra and then AOPS Algebra? Is there anything vital in AOPS pre-algebra that you wouldn't want to miss?
  10. I'm looking at this too, as a supplement. Do you think the student workbook is necessary?
  11. Thank you! I have not heard of WIR before, but it does look interesting. How much religious content does it have beyond the interviews of Christian writers? (We are Christian, but I don't always care for faith based curricula) Anyone else?
  12. We previously did WWE 1 and 2, then CAP Fable. She has been in public school this year for fourth grade. She is a strong writer and absolutely LOVES it, with hopes to be a professional writer someday. Returning to homeschool for fifth grade, I'm not sure where to place her. I was pleased with the writing she did in school this year and felt like she gained in both skill and confidence. Options I am considering are..... - Continuing with CAP, maybe jump to Narrative II? - Another year of WWE, but not sure which level - BW Faltering Ownership - this sounds fun but I feel like I know the least about it - something else? TIA
  13. Upper cabinets to the ceiling. Deep drawers instead of most lower cabinets. Definitely deep drawers next to the dishwasher for every day dishes. I don't like the appliance garages. Vertical divided cabinet for baking pans. Tall Vertical cabinet for broom/mop/etc. I'm not sure what the corner solution is. A lot of people hate the lazy susan but it would be the awful corner cabinet we have. It's pathetic.
  14. I would also go for a 6-12 month lease. It can take at least that long to find a house around here. Our neighbors just sold in a day or two and got a cash offer $15k over asking price.
  15. I have one child in public school this year and have found that it costs us more than homeschooling. (and I am not a super frugal homeschooler either) This varies wildly of course, but there are expenses that come with public school also.
  16. Just curious if they have any sales coming up before fall. Thanks!
  17. I'd like to add a few music CD's to our collection but I'm not really sure what I'm looking for. We have Wee Sing America, the Beethoven's Wig series, The King's Singers kids album.... A family member who is an elementary music teacher gave me a copy of some compilation from her curriculum, but we aren't loving it. Any suggestions?
  18. Yes, I've thought that myself. An August release is hard on those of us who love planning! ;-)
  19. I'm starting to look at the logic stage portion of WTM for next year, so bear with me as this is all new. Logic study - I'm wondering if anyone has skipped the recommended Critical Thinking Co workbooks in 5th/6th and just started a formal logic program in 7th grade? One of my big goals for planning next year is to avoid overloading our schedule, especially with busywork/workbooks. The CTC books just do not impress me based on the samples. This is for a bright kid, who already enjoys a number of hands-on logic games/puzzles. I can skip these workbooks right?
  20. I'm another one who didn't like it as much as the other levels of AAR, especially the readers. When a friend of mine was asking about it, I suggested to just buy the teacher's guide and the activity book/cards. We didn't even use the activity book completely because my boys got tired of it - though I like that pages are easy with minimal prep on my part.
  21. Mine turned 5 in October, so he is on the older side. I started doing more this year with him than I had planned, but he insisted on keeping up with his brother. So this fall will be..... Reading: continue AAR1, moving to AAR2 Handwriting: continue HWT Math: finish RS A, moving to RS B Joining with everyone for read alouds, SOTW, misc science and Jot it Down/BW
  22. I am about 600 miles from my mom. On purpose. The inlaws are about 40 miles away and we love that. We were in the same city as them but moved to shorten dh's commute. My dad was about 1500 miles away but recently moved to our area. That is going to be "interesting."
  23. We are considering getting our 10 year old a glockenspiel for Christmas, but I'd like to find a book to go with it and I'm not coming up with much when I search. Suggestions?
  24. SWB now says in her revised recommendations that three years of WWE is enough. We switched to CAP W+R. We also passed over FLL4 because my child was very solid on the material - moving on to Fix-it Grammar.
