  1. Thanks for the replies! Sounds like we should do science next year. Anyone have a recommendation for a less mathy physics curriculum, if we go that route? I was thinking physics was expected by most schools, so I’m encouraged to hear a different science would be an option. This student gets good grades and truly enjoys school (other than math) so I just want to make sure the transcript looks strong so future opportunities aren’t limited.
  2. Would it look bad on college applications if a student took their three required years of science in grades 9, 10, & 12? I’ve heard colleges look closest at junior year, but this student doesn’t plan to do anything science related in college. Thanks for any advice! Editing to add: This student is not strong in math, so we’d ideally do physics senior year so there is a stronger math understanding. If science is needed junior year- we might do a less essential science class, then still do physics in 12th. Or just go ahead with physics in 11th. (This student has a lot of interests, and doesn’t want to dedicate the time to four years of science if unnecessary).

  4. I like Native brand. I also use to make my own. The particular recipe I used is no longer posted online, but it was a mix of coconut oil, baking soda, and arrowroot powder. (If you Google it, similar recipes will come up). I have sensitive skin, and it worked very well for me. (My husband used it too and also found it effective).
  5. Hypothyroidism can cause delayed growth, but I imagine your Endocrinologist already would have considered that?
  6. I’m glad you decided to get them looked at! I’m a little confused what “mild” results mean…is that the same as precancerous? I’ve had both moles that were skin cancer and precancerous. With those moles, if they didn’t remove the entire mole during the biopsy, they went back and removed more to make sure the margins were clear. The dermatologist sent me to get a wide excision for two that were melanoma, even though the margins were clear. It sounds like they are checking the margins for the larger one. If I were you, I’d ask them to test both again. (I may be misunderstanding your results though). I agree with @EKS and @KrissiK anything questionable I prefer to have removed. Then it’s no longer a concern.
  7. We use cold for everything except our microfiber cleaning rags. (And, even on hot the dirty microfiber rags are still stinky- though we do use unscented detergent. Sometimes I throw vinegar in the load to help with that.)
  8. So sad to read this- I love…well, loved, dark chocolate. Thanks for sharing, this is important to know!
  9. Fall is my favorite- love the beauty of the changing leaves, and the nice weather. Also I always feel excited about a fresh new school year (that excitement doesn’t last through all of fall though!) Spring is a close second for me. Winter is my least favorite, so I get excited when spring comes warming things up and knowing that summer isn’t too far away. Editing to add: now that I’ve read other replies- I’m reminded of how much I do enjoy the summer break from schooling and a more relaxed schedule. I think I need to bump summer up to the second spot.
  10. It’s seems I’m not the only person who misread “candies” as “candles” in the other post, so I thought I’d start a new thread. A lot of scents bother me, but I’ve found I can enjoy beeswax scented candles. I also have some that are a coconut & beeswax blend. (Root and Scentsational are two brands I have). Would love to hear other recommendations!
  11. Agree with the others on being happy with REI tents (and sleeping bags), and also would suggest a 4 person tent for two people.
  12. This worked well for us too. Until our kids are driving, they have a shared phone. (We’d get one for a child sooner if they were away from home often). I know so many kids (and adults- too often myself included) who are seemingly always attached to their phones, and I didn’t want my kids to be this way. By sharing the phone, it generally stays in the kitchen and whoever is needing it takes it when they go out. As to your main question- that is a hard one. My kids have been ready for things at different ages…and without me even vocalizing at what age things are “allowed” the younger kids have been keeping track on their own for when it’s their “turn”. (And the older ones point out how much their younger siblings get to do that they couldn’t). In general, we have an age to reach for certain things, but tell the kids if they don’t show responsibility in that area, then the freedom to do that thing will be put on hold till they show more maturity. (We haven’t had to do that yet).
  13. This made me laugh! We have celebrated Pi Day, but Chocolate Day is new to me. It sounds like a holiday I really ought to be observing!
  14. Thank you for all the replies! I’m so relieved to know that l haven't been neglecting the grandparents all these years! I love celebrating people, but this does just seem like a commercial holiday to me.
  15. At the grocery store today I noticed “Grandparent’s Day” flowers. I googled it when I got home and realized it’s a national holiday. We never celebrated it growing up, and have never had the kids do anything for their grandparents, and I’m wondering if I’m being rude by not celebrating this day. We honor the grandparents on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Wondering if we ought to go do something for my kids’ grandparents.
  16. (Trying to fix poll so second question is answerable by those not participating)
  17. I do think it is worth .5 credit for high school. I’m sorry to say I can’t remember if/how much it covers stocks, bonds, etc.
  18. My teen did this self-paced online program a few years ago and liked it. https://www.ramseysolutions.com/store/education/foundations-in-personal-finance-high-school-edition-for-self-study
  19. Agreeing with the others that appliances aren’t made to last long now. (That’s what the appliance repair guy told me when he said I might as well buy a new fridge rather than spend nearly as much on repairing my fridge- which was only a few years old). So my recommendation would be to buy the least expensive one you can find with decent reviews. The less “fancy” features, the less there will be to break.
  20. This describes me too. For years I ate meat that had been in the fridge with no regard to how many days it was there, just the date on the package. I never had any issues, but once I learned about the official guidelines, it has me stressing over my food if I don’t use it quickly. I was hoping for a unanimous agreement on this forum of it being fine, but since I’ve gotten varied answers it’s currently sitting in my freezer buying me time to think.
  21. I’ve read that you should cook your poultry or meat within a couple days of purchase- but often the sell by/use by date goes much farther out. Is food really safe to use up until that date? Or does it spoil faster from having warmed up on the trip home from the grocery store? I have a 4 day old sealed seasoned chicken package, and the date on it is still 5 days away. I’d rather not cook it tonight…can I freeze it still? Make it tomorrow? I really don’t want food poisoning, and usually am more careful with dates- but it seems like it should still be okay to use? Any input appreciated!
