Yep, this.   Most black pens are actually various mixes of blues, purples, maybe even some orange and red.   Ink chromatography is a pretty standard activity in most CSI/Forensic classes.

That's what made me think the entire scenario was just a set up to raise interest in the students. It worked, though! Difficult to replicate that scenario as a homeschooler, our foray into Ink Chromatography was much less thrilling.
